I honestly don't get why someone could dislike them. What's not to love? They're glorious, flowy. Exciting. Something to grab on to.

I say the same thing about any style for men and women, if it doesn't suit you don't do it.
I have both a penis and long hair yet I pull it of like a champion, why?
Because I have naturally awesome hair, it doesn't curl at all, doesn't knot, all the maintenance I have to do is a 30 second and it looks like it was styled that day. One day I didn't have a shower before work and people kept asking me who my hairdresser was.
This is all just to emphasise that if you can pull it of do it, if you can't don't.

Well, my hair goes down well past my nipples by at least a couple of inches, so obviously, I think highly of it. I originally grew my hair out due to my love of the heavy metal genre and its culture, but I now enjoy simply having it around and couldn't imagine having short hair again. The only downsides I can think of, is it takes a shitload of time to dry after having a shower, and on a windy day it will not stay out of your face. Both are trivial matters though.
Oh, and I have heard some guys find it harder to get jobs if they have long hair. That would be a downside as well, though I have no experience there.

Sadly I can't grow long hair.. it only grows outward in a sort of afro

If they can pull it off, then yeah. Why would I have a problem with it? One of my best friends is basically a wannabe rock star, so he has long but occasionally straggly hair that he dyed blond. It works for him, since that's his look and it reflects his identity.
When done right, they look perfectly respectable. The trick it not to fall into the chasm of looking effeminate, which (depending on your build and facial features) is impossible for some people.
I prefer hair shorter on most guys. Even the few people who I think can sorta pull off long hair would probably look better with a short style, in my opinion.
