Here in America there is a debate brewing as to whether we should have longer school days and also a longer school year. I know many other countries already do year round school, and I think this topic should be discussed more in Congress, the media, etc.

So what are your thoughts? I feel that we should have longer school years and days, or at least try it out in a few schools and see if test scores improve before we make it like that in all schools.

Maybe not a whole year, but I think they should extend it in the UK most schools get 6 weeks off in the summer. I always thought that is far too long.

Fuck no. Y'all should adopt the Italian style of school years.

From the 15th of September to the 6th of June, from 8:20 in the morning to 12:20 in the afternoon with three months holidays in the summer.

Aah, Viva Life!

6 weeks is too long. It should be 3 weeks and the other 3 spread around.

I think school days should be 6-7 hours long and should start around 9 am. Here in Finland it's pretty much that way, except that school mostly begins at 8, which is a bad thing, because it makes everyone in the building unable to work for a few hours. Don't know how long your days are over where you live, but that's just my idea of an ideal school day.

The school year could be around the year, as long as there are a breaks for a couple every now and then. We have a ten week long summmer holiday and that is almost a bit too long. Having an almost continuous year would probably help you keep focused on subjects, a break too long might actually make you forget what you've learnt, making revision necessary to waste good learning time.

You'd hate Italy then. Seriously, 6 weeks is too much? Goddamn, how do you guys have fun?

Basically this. If anyone thinks people will learn more just because they've been keep in longer they seriously underestimate teenagers ability to ignore their teachers.

Stop with using your crazy "logic" and "good thinking skills". Those aren't appreciated here.

No, because then I wouldn't be able to have a summer job. However, if it happens 2 years from now, then I really don't care.

That would suck. i already hate school, to make it longer would probably drive many kids to "phase out" and just stop paying attention in class, so I doubt it would help grades or anything.

I actually forget what I learned on purpose. It makes for a care free summer...But it sucks when I have to read 3 books and write 10-page reports for my classes. I also can't do simple math in the summer time...but whatever.

Isn't that a testament to the fact that nearly everything we learn in school is notionistic bullshit that we'll forget a couple of weeks after having finished school?

A longer school year and day would allow the teachers to get more in depth about the topics and have more time to answer questions about their homework/classwork. The U.S. has some of the worst testing scores in comparison to other countries that are on our level of technological advancement (Germany, U.K., France, etc.)

ahhh yes I used to spend my time on my PS2 or watching the whole series of babylon 5 (yes I was sad)

personally I used to love my 6 weeks off and looked foreward to them immensly during my years at school. However it was a real kick in the teeth for me when I started university to do my Nursing course to discover I have 7 weeks annual leave in a year. Reflecting back on my years I would much rather have spent my summer hols in school actually learning, getting better grades and it wouldn't be soooo much of a shock when it came to the real world of actually having a job/university course which feels more like a job than doing a bloody degree.
