years before completion would be lost levels for me took me 18 years to finish the final stage although I had a few years gap between tries usually, after failing so so many times originally.

Actual playing time in 1 go before completion my highest is probably FFX with 169 hours Beating all the dark aeons and penance without yojimbo this includes optimising the sphere grid as well (i.e all +4s etc)and capturing all the monsters.

Although SF2 turbo is probably the most time I have ever spent on a game that would easily be 500 hundred hours + over the years but its not hard to complete as such.

Although thinking about it I still havent beaten Link to the Past after playing it on and off for years must have restarted a fair few times last time I left off I was up to the second dark world dungeon.

My Fallout New Vegas profile (just one mind you) is currently around 120 Hours and I haven't even finished act 2 yet. I'm plotting how to run both the Wild Card and NCR missions simultaneously, before screwing over the Battle Cattle loving dogs and throwing them out of the Mojave.

I guess the easy response is World of Warcraft. I've been playing the game since just shortly after the initial launch and I'm still finding new stuff to enjoy.

If we're talking a more traditional game with a defined Beginning, middle and end it's probably a two way tie between final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VI.

Those are the games where I spent so much time leveling and exploring and finding every little thing that I maxed out the step and time counters.

There's an old Infocom adventure called Enchanter. I started playing it about 1990 and haven't finished it yet. I sometimes boot it up and see if I can figure it out, but no luck.

I completed the sequels Sorcerer and Spellbreaker, but Enchanter keeps eluding me.

Yes I know there are walkthroughs on the webz, but that wouldn't be any fun.

But ok thats a bit of an oddball case, similar to spending 20 years finishing a crossword puzzle.

Another game is Terraria, I just like to goof around in that game forever and rarely progress much.

I have put in over 11 years trying to beat final fantasy 10. Its not that hard of a game, its just every time i played i kept having to start over for various reasons. First time i played i had one week to beat it because i was on vacation at my uncle's when i was 12. The second time was when i mysteriously found a copy at school age 13. Started all over put it in cd case someone stole my book bag with it in it. 3rd time went to my uncles again at age 17 played it as much as i could got to the last dungeon inside sin but had to leave because once again i was on vacation. Finally for the last time my uncle gave me his copy about 3 years ago now. I got stuck at the chocobo racing game. My brothers broke my ps2 and i'm too cheap to go spend 30 and buy a used one and i'm to busy with classes to put that kind of effort into it. But at least this time i have my bloody memory card with my saves on it!!

* my ps2 has been stolen alot during the years so i have multiple rpg games i have on hiatus because of this same problem as well as ps1 rpgs. To busy to care. The funny thing is i have 10-2 and keep going to buy used ps2 and xbox games building up my library. I am currently pc/ android gamer primarily XD I'll get back to them eventually

Ninja Gaiden.

Back around the time it came out I was renting a lot of games. It's the only one I didn't beat in a week. So I just bought it, and it took me 2 weeks more to finally get through it.

Well although you cant technically beat MMOS, i played eve online for a whooping 3723 hours. (though i must note i havent actually actively played all this. for example today it was trading afk and i only checked on it once an hour for a minute or so, but it counted as "8 hours online". so the actual count would be closer to 1000 hours. which puts san andreas multiplayer close (over 1200 hours) and that one i actively played all the time.
if were going for singlepalyer, then civilization 4 for 391 hours.
i still play both of them along many other games.

my gaming time history among other things can be seen in my xfire profile: http://www.xfire.com/profile/strazdas/ (note that san andreas is actually mostly online, it counted as singleplayer for a long time before seperating the two)

Actual gameplay wise, I'd say Fallout 3. I became a hoarder, obsessed with scavenging ruins for teddy bears and Nuka-Cola trucks.

I played "Digimon World 3" as a kid and only recently, downloaded an emulator and popped in the disk. It looks pretty good (until you get into the battle scenes) and it's probably the reason I have a soft spot for 16 bit games (modern and not so modern)

That, yes, in flalout 3 i used to have to wait for around 120 seconds for my house containers to laod, thats how much crap i had in them. i literally had over million of some ammo types. totalling 232 hours.

9000 hours on World of Warcraft and I still haven't reached the ending credits. I will keep trying though.

Seriously, I've never played World of Warcraft. I think the longest time I've spent on my first playthrough on any game must be Tales of Symphonia contending with a whooping 140 hours. I got lost on some occasions and I got stuck fighting some of the secret bosses so I spent a lot of time getting better weapons and higher level.
i can't find a copy of tales of symponia for under 30. U know where i could get one?

I'm sorry that I will have to disappoint you here. Tales games generally don't work after the sensible business model when it comes to how many copies the demand calls for and how many to make. There is never produced enough games to supply demand. Even new Tales titles are hard to come by.

Lucky you; where I live, the cheapest one costs about $50 (or ~350 sek).
Well, you may take into account that games cost about $90 at launch in Sweden, but still...

Dragon quest: Journey of the cursed king on PS2. My favourite ever non pokemon video game. I went for 100% completion (all monsters defeated, all items collected, all places visited, all side quests etc...) and it took me over 6 months. Not because it was difficult but because I enjoyed the game so much I would take on every single random encounter i could find, and every little detour.

So much game 8D

Lots of game fall into that category. I suppose Civilization III wins, because I own it for about a decade, and always, no matter what other game I might be playing, I find myself playing that game again for hours and days.

A friend challenged me to beat Persona 4 in less than three weeks. I finished it all the way through the true ending at 141 hours. Played it in morning and late night sessions daily so it wasn't a strain. It's the longest game I've ever played to completion, but it felt so short compared to FF9 that I did last year. FF9 took 72 hours and took my time going through the story. 141 hours. If there was another event after the Yomi, I wouldn't mind playing another 100 hours.

Persona 4 (141 hrs)
Persona 3 FES & Answer (143 hrs)
Kingdom Hearts 1 (75 hrs)
FF9 (72 hrs)
