What is the longest ever story/campaign you have ever played in your life of gaming. I would have to say Final Fantasy XII (don't stone me!). I had to level grind forever to have a chance at beating it.

There seems to be some confusion, but I mean the single player story mode where there is a set goal for the main character of the series. In Silent Hill for instance, Harry has to find his daughter Cheryl. We good?

Then shouldn't it be Counter Strike or Starcraft, because people play that again and again for 10 years.

P.S. I was going to say Super mario but I don't know anyone that play it non stop for 25 years...

I have found that Persona 3 and Persona 4 took the longest time to actually get through its main story, but I suppose your question begs another: Do you mean full-story or a single game's storyline?

There are some titles whose stories are relatively short for that particular title, but it demands play on other levels to experience the entirety of the tale. Examples include .hack//INFECTION ~ QUARANTINE, Digital Devil Saga 1&2, and the sheer fact that the Kingdom Hearts saga is STILL incomplete.

I would vote for .hack as the longest core storyline to get through, but Personas 3 or 4 take the single-title trophy for rediculously long campaign.

--EDIT--

I figure I should put in some math to clarify.

Persona 3: 150+ hours of gametime calculated, estimated 350+ hours of time including loss of data through gameover.

.hack: 4 full-length games of material, each averaging maybe 40+ hours of gameplay. It's been too long ago to estimate my personal time including loss of data due to gameover, but suffice it to say that it took an entire summer (3 months) of obssessive play to complete all four.

Assuming that it isn't the game I put the most hours into? I'd have to say Tales of Vesparia, very long drawn out story, but I enjoyed every minute of it!

I'm gonna take this as the game with the longest story if beaten nonstop without having to redo anything.

So yeah probably GTA4 with the dlc tbh.

I'd like to take a minute to say

NECROVISION

god that game takes freaking forever, I must have spent like 40hs on its singleplayer alone

maybe because it goes rather slow or because it has a shitload of levels, the game is awesome, but it is eternal

Dunno about story but I've got over 900 hours on San Andreas.

Probably Persona 3: FES. I clocked in around 90 to 100 hours, not counting the 30-50 hour extra story, the new game pluses, or all the time that the game doesn't count from game overs. So, pretty long.

I've beaten it... and gotten over it.

OT: Deus Ex's story is pretty long. Not to mention, if you're playing stealth, you take your time while sneaking around in the air vents.

World Of Warcraft.

Hmm, If we count the series as a whole, I think the Xenogears/Xenosaga takes this one.

Golden Sun The Lost Age. Then again, I got horribly stuck, because I got completely lost in Aqua Rock because I just HAD to have every Djinni in the game (I suck at wandering around dungeons w/o a map).

The longest game campaign for me WITHOUT any side quests was Dragon Quest VIII. I spent hours upon hours grinding to beat a boss in the MIDDLE of the game and the game proceeded to get 10x more harder (which I thought was impossible) after that point. It took about 87 hours of story only gameplay for me and 91 including the Dragovian Trials and some other side quest i decided to do. I came in at 150+ for FFXII and it broke before I could fight Yizamat and a friend came in at 169ish in FF Tatics Advance. Persona games breeze by for me....IV more so because I actually borrowed the strategy guide from a friend (Shoot me ok.) and Don't even get me started on how many hours I spent (And continue to plan on spending on) any given Disgaea game....and FFXIII (I love JRPGS...so what?)

I don't know if this is going to sound stupid, but I thought Half-Life 2 was pretty long. I played that game for HOURS every day before finally beating it after a week or two. Not like, 2 or 3 hours. Maybe 5 to 6.

I guess GTA IV was pretty long, too. Mind you, I did a lot of dicking around in that game. Half-Life 2 is strictly linear.
