Longest - Neverwinter nights
Shortest - probably Dragon Age 2 (if you only count completed games)

Longest- Dragon Age: Origins (90 fucking hours on ONE playthrough, if you can believe it)

Quite possibly Persona 3 and Persona 4 are the longest. In-game, you are performing the actions of your character for like a YEAR. Out-of-game, that still adds up to alot of hours.
The shortest? Most of my Atari games. Yes, I am that old. I have games that are exceedingly low-tech and last for about a couple minutes. Do I win?

Longest would be KOTOR 1 or 2, both clocked about 50+ hours if I remember correctly.
I'm not sure what the shortest is, The cod series takes a short time, I remember beating cod4 really quickly.
Then again Halo Reach seemed to take about 10 minutes, and I don't recall Arkham asylum lasting too long either.
Colour me undecided on that one.

Longest: Xenogears. Clocked 500+ hours.
Shortest: Solitare (shortest single play-through - 80 seconds)
Shortest: Final Fantasy Tactics - played a single combat, returned it to store

If we are talking full priced games I'd say:
Longest- Super Mario Galaxy 2 (all stars)
Shortest- CoD (random sequel name, these campaigns are a kick in the nutsack for my wallet)

To put some numbers on Portal (given that it's been mentioned as shortest a few times), I played it through once on XBox which took a few hours, second time I played through on PC Steam tells me I took 72 minutes. That was knowing what I was doing but not making any particular attempt at a speed run.
Longest is more difficult, Elite: Frontier, and Civ 2 have taken 100s of hours over the past decade or so, but Fallout 3 took 120 hours from one playthrough.

Tales of Symphonia, despite being one of the greatest games I have played since 2004, was pretty damn long if you took the time to really do everything (which I didn't).
Shortest, Super Mario 3, about 45 minutes.
