We're all gonna diii.....oooooooooh who cares.

Listen,

Hey!! YOU!! Look up. Yeah. You were walking into Darwin's trap. Trap? What is this trap I speak? You know those people who walk on the sidewalk/pathway with their head down looking into their shiny tiny computers knocking into people because they have no fucking awareness and can't be more like Matt Murdoch and not get pissy when you can't be bothered to look up?!?!

Don't look at, I know I'm a hypercrite. That's not the point here.

The state of New Jersey, wait, really? that state? Alright. Anyway, New Jersey are looking to make cell phone walking illegal. Maybe they are doing it because, well, some people have no sense of awareness around them and would rather check their Instagram, an exs statues or some ass on Twitter's latest tweet to notice a pole in front of them, or a fountain or lord forbid A FUCKING ROAD CROSSING!!! Which can lead to a serious injury or death. Over a phone.

Look up more... while you are reading this thread. Oh the irony. So stop walking and texting.

Is this law needed? Do we need more laws to cater to those who just don't give a fuck about their safety? Are humans just stupid? Should we just ban phones all together and go back to the age of talking to one another face to face, smiling at one another and being kind and social to strangers and not be moody and miserable?

Nah, I am fucking with ya. We humans are a strange bunch.

This isn't just about the safety of the person using the phone. It's about the safety of everyone else around them.

What happens to a person when they wander into traffic? They get hit? There's injury to them, injury to the passengers in the vehicle and property damage. The vehicle swerves to avoid them/slams on their breaks? That risks other auto accidents.

If someone wants to risk their own life with their stupidity, that's one thing. But, their stupidity is putting the lives of others in danger.

I nearly got my dumb ass run over a few days ago while crossing the street and listening to music on my phone. In my case, the driver was in the legal wrong as I was already crossing when they started to move, but I'm sure that would read great on my tombstone.

As for having a law about it, I imagine it will be treated every bit as serious as jaywalking.

China and Japan install special sidewalk lanes for people absorbed in their phones, New Jersey goes, "Ay! Put your fucking phone away when you're walkin!" In all honesty, due to track records I think Jersey did the wrong thing this time around.

I can understand the reason for it (especially when a friend on FB share a video of the amount of death cause by walking into the road while on the phone therefore not paying attention to their surrounding) but law is flaw.

What about sensible people who used the phone but are NOT moving like standing still to take a call or standing by the bus stop and etc?

Yeah, that wasn't really your fault or your smartphone. Sure, the music probably didn't help, but it's not gonna stop an asshole from running you over because they don't understand right of way.

I can't really understand why people walk around with their smartphones out. The earphones I use allow me to be aware of sounds and approaching cars, and if I need to use my phone, I stop. Simple as that. I'm not in such a hurry that I can't stand still for fifteen seconds to send a text message.

My point was that I should have been paying more attention. I only saw them when they were real close and I was able to dodge them. I didn't hear them. The only headphones I can use that aren't broken have padding around the ears, so they are quite effective at blocking noise.

Ah, gotcha. I suppose I've been guilty of that myself, once or twice. And that's unfortunately all it takes. A moment of inattention at the wrong time, and you're either going flying or at least getting the scare of your life.

I've only gotten to the supercrite level. Congratulations!

Anyways, I think it's a bit strange law. Most people are able to multitask, and so both use their phone AND not walk into speeding traffic. If they aren't, then that's hardly our problem.

The top level of all the critics. This is why I hate typing on tablet. You type in one word and it changes it to god knows what.

To put it simply, the law is stupid and useless and New Jersey is a hellhole, none of this is surprising me and I want to know what happened to personal responsibility and not being an idiot.

Also good luck enforcing it.

I have stood in the college parking lot and seen so many students almost getting ran over by walking in front of vehicles while there face was plastered to their phone.

I remember watching Judge Judy. Any time there was a traffic incident and it came to light that one of the people was on their cell phone, the case ended right there. No more arguments, case closed, you lose. This might be a better alternative than making walking and staring at your phone illegal. Simply make it so that anything that happens to you while you are walking with you face glued to you phone is considered your fault. You cant sue a driver who hits you. You cant sue anyone for falling/slipping/tripping on anything. If you are on your phone when an accident happens, you accept full liability.

Easily abused. Now it's "Hey I'm having a bad day and that slow pedestrian annoys me, let's make a pedestrian pancake" if someone is in the mood

Yes... If it's not in writing, then it's totally legal...

Other than that, they should just make floating, invisible phones... I hear stereotypical hobos have the prototype versions...

I don't use my phone while walking, so I'm safe.

However I did once nearly get run over while walking home with a pizza. I got distracted by the delicious smell while crossing a road and the next thing I knew a van was screeching to a stop about two feet away my big squishy body and the very pale woman behind the wheel was trying to simultaneously yell at me and stave off a heart attack.

So, uhh... ban pizza sniffing? All pizzas must now be served in airtight boxes?
