Looking at a gun for Christmas..

So, I have officially run out of things to ask for at Christmas. Although I suppose, technically, that started a couple of years ago. Anyway, one suggestion - a gun - came from the most unlikely of sources - my mother. So, I've been pondering it, and figured: why not. I'm likely not paying for a majority of the thing, and I do enjoy going shooting. And hell, there's no harm in having a last line of self-defense if I manage to piss off the wrong person in such a way that he's trying to physically kill me.
(EDIT: I'm not sure if this last bit comes off as overly looking for trouble to anyone, but it sounded like it could be inferred as such when I re-read it out loud. And I do not mean it like that at all. So no worries - I'm not out looking for trouble.)

ANYWAY: so, I'm looking for suggestions on a pistol to buy. I was thinking about a .45 of some kind. Although I've lived in Alaska for close to twenty years now, I've never actually been that much of a gun-nut. In fact, I've been shooting most starting this last summer when I met a friend from Washington - and I've shot more rounds from his AK-47 (although his model is apparently called something else - I can't recall what at the moment) over the last year than my entire life prior to it.

Point being, I don't have all that much knowledge of guns. I know the proper usage and safety rules of guns, I can load and unload them; set the safety; fill magazines/clips (please, forgive my misuse of clips/magazines. I get enough hell about it from my friends).

So, any suggestions would be appreciated. tl;dr - looking for a pistol. Probably a .45? Although I would like to be able to afford to take the thing shooting often enough that I can get comfortable with it (sounds like that usually takes several hundred rounds or so) without going bankrupt. Anyhow; lemme know what you all think. If you need any more informtion, let me know. And if this sounds disjointed and incoherent at all, I apologize - it's a bit late, and I should have been asleep quite a while ago.

If you want a mixture of low cost ammunition and the ability to defend yourself with it, I would probably recommend a 9mm of some kind. What I would recommend is the Beretta 92FS (Also just known as the M9) as it is a reliable weapon used by local law enforcement as well as the military.

This is a site that provides more information about 9mm pistols.

If your primary use is going to be target shooting, I'd recommend something that uses .22LR rounds. Those things are dirt cheap, there's about no recoil, and you still get the fun of shooting.

This, too, but you could probably get a Glock instead if you prefer a lighter weapon.

I've got a Colt 1911 and I love the thing, so here's a recommendation for the .45 ACP. Ammo is more expensive than 9mm, but it hits significantly harder if you ever have to use it in defense.

Yeah, I'm sure that, realistically, it will mostly be used for target shooting. I mean, as far as I know there aren't any groups of assassins after me or anything... But I want it to have something there if I do need it - and also to have some fun at the range. Thus, I don't want to get used to a .22 and then try to switch over to a bigger round if I need/want to. From what I understand, that wouldn't work too well...

Besides, I have plenty of friends who already own .22's, and it's easy enough to mooch off of them. :) I'd ask them for some help on the matter, but they've all managed to simultaneously drop off the face of the earth.. Stupid holidays. Bah.

If it's for home defence, I'd recommend a shotgun. Yeah, I'm afraid I don't know that much about pistols. In general, I'd rather go for a good S&W revolver. Timeless, durable, and from what I hear, mechanically simple.
