Looking for a Decent PC PvP Game

I've been around the block, but it seems I'm running up dry on PvP games to play. So I need some help finding a new one.

I do not want to play any MOBA what so ever, when I say this I mean absolutely none, I dislike the genre and will not play any "Sort of MOBA" games either like Smite. These are out of the question.

I also would like to hear new games, not ones recommended on every topic. That means no Dark Souls, no Mount and Blade (This includes War of the Roses), no Chivalry, no Counter Strike, no older FPS since they are not my cup of tea (Quake and such), no TF2, no Arma or DayZ, no any modern shooter game that everyone knows (BF, Call of Duty, Halo), no Aion/Tera/GW/GW2/Neverwinter/Lineage, and no Archeage (The game has turned way too grindy and I hate the whole mobile game "Labor/Energy" system).

Also, I do not want to pay for any P2P games like WoW, EVE, and Darkfall. I just don't have that kind of money to drop on a game and that much commitment to just play that game.

Finally, I'm a PC player and don't play on console anymore.

Skill based is huge for me, I do not like games at all the have class/character imbalances and gear curves.

Right now I'm playing Nosgoth, Elite: Dangerous, Mechwarrior: Online, and Planetside 2 occasionally. I'm also going to be playing Kingdom Under Fire 2 and Black Desert in the future, but that won't be until 2015 for at least KUF2. Also looked at Gloria Victus, but I fear it will be too much like M&B. Also, thought about getting into the RTS scene, but I'm still on the edge if I would like that sort of gameplay, possibly going into SC2.

Please do not recommend anything I said to not recommend above, I do not have exceptions at all for any of them above.

Uhh... Put custom firmware on the PS3 and play MGO? It's easily the most skill-based shooter possibly ever. Body shots do so little damage that you need to headshot to kill, the skill-gap amongst players is HUGE. That makes it so you don't run into campers because some dude camping in a corner, waiting, then spraying only ends up dying. Grenades do not one-hit kill, which means no noobtubing either. There's no grenade or melee buttons, knifing takes real skill. There's no health regen and a proper spawning system (no random spawns, no restricted spawn zones). The game is almost perfectly balanced, there's only one minor imbalance (where a level 1 skill can nullify a level 3 skill). I'd still be playing MGO every week if the servers didn't go offline. Fans have brought the game back online though.

I should've probably added that I'm a PC player and don't play on consoles at all, but I do thank you for being one of the few people to give a recommendation that not everyone and their mother gives.

Loadout

Yes, it's an older game but it's as fair as it can be and totally free. Also it's all that skill based, mole like quake 3 8 player matches, but it's fun barrel of monkeys.

I looked at Loadout awhile back ago, but it feels too much like a twitch shooter, which I'm not really into.

Nidhogg?
Eh, that's probably not up your ally.
It's a good short indie game to play with a friend.

Crawl is suppose to be good as well, though it is in early access.

Wait...

You want recommendations for PC PvP games, but have included stipulations that essentially discount (rough guess) 95% of all PC PvP games?

Sorry, but that's going to make it really difficult to recommend anything that won't be shot down or that you haven't already tried.

:/

That said:
You could give MechWarrior Online a go. If you're a fan of giant robot combat and piloting simulators (slimmed down) it's pretty fun.

"I want suggestions for good PvP PC games, but let me first discount 99% of all PvP PC games." Is what you're basically saying.

I ain't one to call people picky, but come on man XD

If you're counting fighters, Street Fighter 4 is your best bet.

Red Orchestra 2. It's a heavily skill-based WW2 shooter where you will have to train your eyes to spot an enemy rifleman far on the horizon hiding behind a log. PvP matches are largely conquest-based and Tripwire Interactive prides itself on realism, having personally handled every weapon before it becomes a part of their game. The original release featured eastern Europe with the Germans fighting the Russians. Currently, it's more focused on the Pacific front - U.S. versus Japan. It has an active niche audience, lots of historical buffs from all over choosing to play for their respective home countries. With that being the case, you'll never be without active servers. The game is rarely mentioned because the focus on realistic combat can be a barrier for entry - less run and gun, more hold, defend position, watch your flank - but is soon rewarded once you start learning the ropes and get a few kills under your belt.

No MOBAs? Fuck it, I'm still going to recommend Awesomenauts. It's a 3v3 side scrolling MOBA, and it's very casual and easy to play (no last hits and a simple loadout system). It also has the best theme songs in all of video games. Plus it's only $10 and often goes on sale, so there really isn't anything stopping you from giving it a shot.

Seriously though, you are probably going to have to step outside of your comfort zone if you want something new. Your requirements leave very little options.

FISTFUL OF FRAGS!
Its truly free (not that stupid F2P) and its quite skill based, its a FPS set in the old west, weapons are slow and take forever to load and your movement penalizes your aim, but you CANNOT CAMP (except in one map) because of fanning. (also the akimbo system is cool), it has Half Life 2 graphics but its worth the shot.

Also you can play Starcraft 2, theres a downloadable trial version in Battlenet and if you have a friend you can play rankeds with him.

Also Max Payne 3, it was possibly the most skill based, badass looking game ever released on consoles. I havent checked the PC version but in consoles every kill was a beautiful choreography of slo-mo, strafing and headshots. I just hope the PC version isnt just peek shooting and auto-turreting. Auto-turreting is impossible with controllers, so you had to fight for every single kill.

Also i was going recently trough Bioshock Infinite and i recalled that Bioshock 2 had quite a decent and unique MP, the only thing that is unbalanced is the Electroshock-HeavyUpgradeBow combo, but you can evade that with a well placed Telekinesis or a Cyclonic trap if the roof isnt high.

If your rig is powerful enough you can also try Arma 3 and Day Z

I dont know if Tribes Ascend is still working, it stopped getting updates after the studio became rich with Smite. But its worth checking out, basically you move at around 60Mph and theres no hit-scan guns. Shazbot!

So much this, it is easily my favorite shooter because if you have a team of Rambo wannabes, you get your ass shipped back to you in a cigar box. I've had CoD kids ragequit when they couldn't handle my sniping, demanding I fight them fair and square. If you fight fair, you're a chump.

Situational awareness, map knowledge, working with your teammates and knowing how to handle the weapon you're equipped with are the keys to victory. And even then it might not be enough if even one flank gets exploited by the enemy. Its rough, unforgiving and the most rewarding FPS game I've played to date.

Or, if you want PvP for free check out World of Tanks. There is a certain amount of skill required to play it well and you don't have to spend a dime on it if you don't want to. It's an arcadey game but knowing how the ballistics of it work and how to work with the AFV you launch the battle with are keys to victory. If you want to avoid the stupidity of random teams full of 10 year olds however, I suggest clan wars. That's where the real tactical stuff happens. Its definitely a game to pick up with a friend because if you do it by yourself you might get frustrated both by the grind and by the foolish teams you will frequently be thrown into by the match maker. Still, I'm addicted to it and will probably stick with it for a long, long time.

Nidhogg I know of it, but never played. Would be fun to play with friends I can see though.

Crawl I would have to look a bit more into.

That is very obscure, I don't think I would play it, but thanks for that suggestion.

I do not like MOBAs at all. I played DOTA, DOTA 2, LoL, HoN, and Smite. I've played my fair share of them and I just don't like how the system plays, it's not for me at all.

Also, this is a thread from someone who has played a lot of PvP games and this is not a just normal "Help me find a game" thread. I can do one search and find hundreds of threads with the same generic suggestions.

SirBryghtside said:
I know this is probably recommended quite a lot, so goes a bit against the OP, but Hearthstone is a really fun game.

I've played Hearthstone and I'm not really into card games like it. Granted it kept my attention for awhile, it just isn't my cup of tea.

Vigormortis said:

While you're entitled to your own opinions, the point of the thread is to find games that aren't massively well known, because I've more than likely already tried them. Also, as I said in my original post, I'm playing MWO already.

Daystar Clarion said:

Again, you're also entitled to your opinions. I've played most, if not all, well known PvP games out there. I'm trying to find games that may not be that well known.

I've looked into the fighter genre, just don't know if I could get into the community. We'll see in the future.

Try Dota 2, its a pretty high learning curve though, so good luck!

As I've said above, absolutely will not play any MOBA. I've also already played that one.

Will have to look into it more, but thanks for the suggestion.

I use to play WoT a lot a long while ago, but there are just things that bug me to no end in that game.

Bioshock 2

Arma 3 or Dayz

Tribes Ascend

Fistfull of Frags looks hilarious because it reminds me of the old western game I use to play way back when I was a kid, will check it out.

Thanks for the information for SC2.

Forgot that Max Payne 3 was released, but I'm not very keen to like cover shooters.

Bioshock 2 wasn't that very interesting for MP.

Already said above that I've already played both Dayz and Arma.

I've also played Tribes Ascend, the game kind of died for everyone.

That sounds very promising, will no doubt look into it.

Never played Fantasy Earth Zero, but a shame the servers went down. I also played Ghost Recon Online with some friends, but I dislike cover shooters. The whole center your screen for a cheap surprise instant kill from cover bugs me a lot.

Camelot Unchained looks interesting, but I think Black Desert and KuF2 will probably interest me more though.

personally i think it doesnt get any better than TF2 but ok, you dont want that

how about Company of Heroes? the first game is better in my opinion but its kind of dead, the second game however still was many players and workshop support, this is an RTS series buts its very unique, the combat is very authentic and you have to do stuff like move your guys into cover, offer supression fire and micro manage vehicles to protect their vulnerable rear sides

LOL, Only n00bs take cover in that game, trust me its worth the try (if it is as cool as it was on consoles)
