So I'm not only a fan of games but also of books. I'm looking for a game that is well written rather then well acted. Don't get me wrong I do enjoy good CS and what not but I'm a bit nostalgic for an old timey text story. Any suggestions? It doesn't have to be a console game or anything like that. I'm even interested in user made "Build your own RPG" type of thing.
Also, are there any games like the old build your adventure kind of books from when we were all young. You know... "Turn to page 48 if you want to dangle on the cliff helplessly or turn to page 102 if you want to fall and flap your arms like a bird." Kind of thing.
Basically I'm looking for something a bit less mainstream and a bit more creative.

I like the story and writing in the sam and max games. They are silly and childish, but I have fond memories of them from my youth. I'm currently playing the xbox live arcade game Sam and Max Hit the Road.

I'd recommend Masq.
It's a free-to-download game that plays out exactly like a choose-your own adventure book. There are literaly hundreds of different ways for the story to end. I suggest to try it.

Mass Effect?

I'm glad Im not the picky with gaming
I was going to suggest this, as it's very heavy on story and not so much heavy on gameplay.

You might like Planescape : Torment. It's a morbid, very text heavy RPG which actually is focused a lot more on Dialog than Fighting. It's tells a great engaging story build around a solid RPG experience.
Here, check it out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planescape:_Torment.
Oh and there is an amazing Game created with the RPG maker (the build your own RPG thing) called Vampires Dawn. It's a great Turn Based RPG, kinda the JRPG type reminiscent of SNES RPG's but with immense Freedom and very tight story telling and immensely intresting "being a Vampire" Mechanics. And it's free. But i don't know if there is a English version of it.It was a German project but it was so succsesfull ( being featured in all big German Gaming Magzines, receiving and Commercial Mobil phone spin-off etc.) .Just google it if your intrested.

Planescape: Torment. Best writing (and there's lots of it) you'll ever find in a CRPG. Trust me. It's been scientifically proven.

Yeah, Fallout 3's pretty good. So are 1 and 2.
Bioshock's OK.

If you're into JRPG's:
Persona 2, or maybe Persona 4.

By "well written", do you mean it's gotta have a nifty/unique plot? Or that the dialogue/narration/words'n'stuff should be highbrow and classy? Both? Cuz I can think of quite a few games which meet the first criteria, if not necessarily the second.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and Planescape: Torment is all-around gold in either regard.

I found Vampire: the masquarede bloodlines to be very unique, creative and fun. You should try it, if can find a copy.

Bioshock (very atmospheric, excellent story-line, and simply fun)
Shadow of The Colossus (if you like a beautiful game with a great story)
Golden Sun (for a very good story)

To mention a few.

Basically I'm looking for something off the map. I did love Bioshock and Mass Effect, I do agree that they were well written. But I'm looking for something with more reading then acting. Just in search of something that has a bit more of a 90s type. Doesn't need to be an RPG or shooter, I play it all. I had a whole lot of games that were pretty much book/games on a disk when I was younger. I can't recall any of the titles. I?m not exactly sure how to explain them other then in my initial posting. All in all? I want something that is different from the sea of games I?ve been playing. Any suggestions? are good to me.

English-translated 2k3 is illegal, of course. Not that I really care, just sayin'. VX is pretty similar to XP. Some would argue that it's worse than XP. Myself, I slightly prefer VX. I haven't seen any rpgmaker games which would qualify as "well-written", in my opinion, but there may be some out there, and of course, you can always write your own.

Topic Creator: yeah, start with Planescape: Torment. Sounds like you'd dig it. It's very unique.
