For a build your own RPG I'd go with KOTOR 1 or 2 (I think one has a better story though), or Fallout 3.

Fallout 3?
He said GOOD and Well Written
He also said he wanted something like one of the old "build your own adventures" books. And in a way, I think Fallout 3 actually is a lot like those. As is Oblivion and Mass Effect. So Fallout 3, Oblivion, or Mass Effect would be my suggestion.

You would probably be the only person I would recommend the Harvey Birdman game to. It's kind of like one of those choose your path books and it's kind of funny.

Infamous is pretty well written and has quite a few choose your path moments that really end up changing the game.
Same with Bethesda Games: Fallout 3, Oblivion.

Hotel Dusk for the DS.

You may also want to check out some of the Japanese Dating Sim type games if you don't mind x rated entertainment. Some of them are actually pretty good... well, entertaining.

Mass Effect?

I'm glad Im not the picky with gaming
I was going to suggest this, as it's very heavy on story and not so much heavy on gameplay.
Yeah. And if you like books, you'll like this. Cuz' you'll read, a lot.

I'd recommend Masq.
It's a free-to-download game that plays out exactly like a choose-your own adventure book. There are literaly hundreds of different ways for the story to end. I suggest to try it.
If he doesn't give it ago I am.

OP: How old are the games you are willing try? With abit more info on what you have already played?

So I'm not only a fan of games but also of books. I'm looking for a game that is well written rather then well acted. Don't get me wrong I do enjoy good CS and what not but I'm a bit nostalgic for an old timey text story. Any suggestions? It doesn't have to be a console game or anything like that. I'm even interested in user made "Build your own RPG" type of thing.
Also, are there any games like the old build your adventure kind of books from when we were all young. You know... "Turn to page 48 if you want to dangle on the cliff helplessly or turn to page 102 if you want to fall and flap your arms like a bird." Kind of thing.
Basically I'm looking for something a bit less mainstream and a bit more creative.
Easy done.

You sound like you might be one of the few of us left who could really enjoy Interactive Fiction. If you're unfamiliar with the term, it's what used to be called Text Adventure games. Don't let the stigma put you off, though, things have changed a *lot* since the dark old days most people remember.

Here are a few sites to start you off:

http://www.brasslantern.org/beginners/
http://www.wurb.com/if/
http://www.ifarchive.org/

Make sure you read the article [http://www.brasslantern.org/beginners/tadownload.html] on what you need to do to play the games before you try downloading them. If you have trouble, but are interested in pursuing these games, feel free to PM me.

A few of my favorite IF games are Spider and Web [http://www.wurb.com/if/game/207], Losing Your Grip [http://www.wurb.com/if/game/1243], the Earth and Sky [http://www.wurb.com/if/series/57] series and (almost more a piece of art than a game) Photopia [http://www.wurb.com/if/game/255].

I also liked last year's third place award winner in the annual IF Competition: Everybody Dies [http://www.wurb.com/if/game/3143], a very brief but well-made game.

Also, on the more graphical and *extremely* well written side, I heartily recommend Yahtzee's games [http://www.fullyramblomatic.com/games.htm], especially the Trilby series: 5 Days a Stranger [http://www.fullyramblomatic.com/5days/], 7 Days a Skeptic [http://www.fullyramblomatic.com/7days/], Trilby's Notes [http://www.fullyramblomatic.com/notes/] and 6 Days a Sacrifice [http://www.fullyramblomatic.com/6days/]. He doesn't just criticize games on Zero Punctation- he's proven he *knows* what it takes to make a good game.

I'll second Hotel Dusk. Good game, well written. Pretty much an interactive novel.

Mass Effect and Knights of the Old Republic, too.
