Ive played FF 11 and Runescape and i have been looking for another mmorpg. Its been a while since i played either, turns out they deleted my runescape account and 11 is now as popular as using a rock for a pillow. I was hoping to avoid that electronic heroine called World of Warcraft. I want to get the Escapist's Community opinion

I highly recmennd either Atlantica Online if you like turn-based. If you want instance based, try either Dungeons and Dragons Online or Guild Wars, and for persistant world, I love Lord of the Rings Online

If you're looking for something a little more unique (for an MMO, anyway), try Fallen Earth. It's set in a post-apocalyptic future filled with mutants and raiders, and you can specialize in handguns, rifles, or melee. I also like the crafting system alot better than other MMOs. It isn't free-to-play, but you can get a two-week trial.

I should mention that everything I listed is free to play. Well, aside from Guild Wars, but that's only a one-time fee, not monthly

I heard Vindictus is pretty good. Also, I like dabbling in the two browser-based MMOs Kingdom of Loathing and Dead Frontier. I'll probably be looking into DCUO when it comes out.

Guild Wars is the only MMO that I enjoyed for more then 1 hour (played it hundreds of hours) so that is my only recommendation ;)

I second and highly recommend Dungeons and Dragons Online.

It's free to play now but it's still the most action oriented MMO out there and a blast as well. It's well worth paying $15 for one months VIP access (you get everything that way) and then veteran status after that. Doing that along with questing a bunch during your free month of full access will get you enough quests to play the full game for free pretty much forever.

It's based on DND rules but with real time active combat. You actually swing a sword, shoot a bow or fire off spells. You also can do so in large parties and there are some really awesome quests to complete. Easily the best MMO I have ever played with as much long term potential as WoW but with a much more fast paced and active combat system. In addition the quests are often really cool. There are no "fetch of these" or "Kill 50 of those" quests. Instead each is like a mini DnD campaign.

It's free so if your looking for something new, give it a try.

You want to know WHY World of Warcraft somehow has a reputation as "electronic heroin"?

1. People who don't play MMOs lump all online RPGs into the one category they refer to as World of Warcraft because:
2. It's great. It's the most polished and complete-feeling MMO I've ever played. The graphics are outdated, but art style much more than makes up for it. This isn't something a few screenshots will portray properly. The feeling of walking into Stormwind for the first time, hearing the epic theme music start playing and seeing the sun glaring from behind the spires of the cathedral. It's amazing what they have done with such a low polygon count.
The game is incredibly accessible, while still possessing considerable challenge if you want it to. The user interface is the best I've seen, being rivaled only by Guild Wars and Rift. (and runescape actually, the new UI is very minimal and functional) But RuneScape's controls feel extremely clunky and unnatural. This is my favourite thing about WoW, personally. The controls are amazingly responsive and tight. Your character has literally 1:1 movement with your mouse, while this may look unrealistic sometimes, it's hard to go back to a 'rubberry' control scheme. Rift is the only game I've played that has controls this good. (I'm actually rather looking forward to it. If your unwarranted stigma for WoW is THAT big, I at least suggest you try to get a beta key for Rift, it's looking verrryyy promising)

Time to be trolled...

For a good FREE MMORPG I say Runescape. The pay version is cheap so IMHO it is better value for money than WOW.

Ninja'd by the OP...

I say Guild Wars. It has no subscription fees, an engaging story, relatively friendly player base, many different flavors of pvp...

<--- plus you can hang around with this fella. (laser vision not included)

I recently downloaded Lord of the Rings online after finding out it was completely 10% free. I was happy with it.
And I used to play Runescape... But after I went to last play it and realised there was no wilderness anymore, my heart broke and I stopped playing it...

May I recommend Final Fantasy 11? The game is a subscription-based game and comes with 30 day Free Trial. It is an outdated game but the game is being consistently updated.
