Looking for a neurotic hobby

So I'm not sure if this should go here or off-topic, but this seemed most likely.

Backstory: I used to make and paint model planes as a child until my mother threw my collection away due to 'slipping grades' (got a 65% on a test instead of the usual 80+). I got upset and stopped. However, I've lately felt a strong urge to do something in that vein again, but tiny and precise.

My problem is that most model kits seem to be for large and ugly things. I can't fathom why anybody would want to assemble and paint things like woodchipper models, so I decided to look into nerdier alternatives. By the way, if you think woodchippers, combine harvesters and tractors are aesthetically comparable to the sculptures of Michelangelo, that's fine. I'm not gonna judge, but the point is that I have no interest.

So I looked into Gundam models first, but it turns out those cost about 2/3 my monthly rent each. I then spent most of last night (seriously, this urge has been costing me sleep) looking into WarHammer 40K models, which I remember the older brother of a childhood friend of mine having. Those seemed like the kind of tiny, fussy, precise models I might like to make. I looked up the Dutch Games Workshop site, but all the pics there show finished models and the nearest store is 4 hours by train, so I can't just swing by and check it out in person.

So my questions:
1. If you order WH40K models online, are they pre-assembled and painted? I have no interest in actually owning WH40K models or playing it, so this would be a waste of quite a bit of money for me.

2. Alternatively, can anybody think of a better type of miniscule busy-work? I've looked into watch-making, which has intrigued me since childhood, but that seems to require a lot of expensive tools I don't have (access to).

Thank you for taking the time to read and possibly reply.

Yep Warhammer comes unassembled and unpainted. It's a good hobby of the neurotic but it costs a heap.

If you enjoy cars, or trains, or planes, or whatever you can always get models that you have to assemble yourself and paint. They probably aren't as complex as WH40k but if you do a good job you could probably turn around and sell them to a collector or something.

I see alot of diorama materials in craft stores, maybe (and I'm just pulling this number out of air here) 1/10000 scale fantasy relms like Tamriel or one of the Warcraft planets.
