Well Serial Experiments Lain is my most favorite show 3v4r... I own it on every format it's been released including the special edition, limited released blu ray (imported that thing from Japan...) plus a mishmash of other things, like, art books, t shirts, hats, pins, and statuettes (Their not dolls!) just to name a few...<.<
Oh, my. You are certainly a new idol of mine. Lain is definitely my favorite anime yet (although, certainly not uncontested for the spot). I think it's really masterfully written, with both great subtlety and depth. Actually, I'm planing on watching it again soon with my girlfriend. c:

Wolf's Rain might be good for you. It has some pretty awesome fight scenes, and it's only one season long, 26 episodes, and it has a pretty good story arc.

It doesn't have any tentacles, overly sexual stuff, or bloodthirsty weirdos.

The story is fairly straight forward, and there's nothing that crazy in it, if that's what you meant by down to earth and not too crazy.

It also has a great soundtrack!

You don't know how much all of this has cost me... the Blu Ray by itself was $400...<.<

Make sure you have her play the Lain drinking game...

I can't find the rules but basically drink whenever you don't know what's happening... or whenever you get a close up of someones eye(s)...<.<

Black Bible might be up your alley...
I kid, I kid.

In all seriousness...
-Cowboy Bebop is fantastic. Great fight scenes, some deeper meaning, and characters that feel real.
-Samurai Champloo. If you liked Bebop watch this. It's not as good, but same formula, different setting and characters.
-Death Note. Not any real action, but a huge mind game and battle of wits. Also there's a big moral question brought up that's a constant theme throughout the anime. Watch it.
-FLCL...I'll have to watch this one again, because apparently there's alot of deeper meaning behind it, but great action and very cool art style.
-Elfen Lied. Interesting story and concept...be warned though, tons of unnecessary nudity and gore...but a lot of it serves a purpose.

That's all i can do for you at the moment. As someone who doesn't love anime, but loves SOME anime, these will entertain you for a while.

I totally respect your purchase. Lain Blu Ray > Diamond Earrings. Also, the positive feedback that drinking game would cause is terrifying to think about. You start off understanding most of it, then you start losing track (take a drink), you get even more lost because you're intoxicated (take another drink), until the entire series becomes a massive ball of confusion (drink, drink, drink, drink). I guess you could suggest a drink that's a little less destructive, like tea. ^-^

I hate FLCL, but it's because the female lead grates my nerves like nobody's business. And it's kind of bat shit crazy.

As for animes, I don't have any to recommend really. Cowboy Bebop is good like almost everyone else has said, but there are some sexual themes here and there, and some blood lust from some villains, if I remember correctly. You're criteria are rather vague, so I don't know what you want really.

I loved Trigun. Vash is an awesome protagonist, and it's rather short -- only a season or two. However, there are some sex scenes, but they aren't graphic in the least. Also, there is a sci-fi theme, so if that negates your "down to earth" criteria than count it out. RomeoxJuliet was good, but obviously based on romantic themes; it did have some good fight scenes. I hate the play Romeo and Juliet and I liked this anime's twist on the classic story.

Samurai Champloo is a good one, plenty of fights scenes and it's alos pretty funny. The weirdest thing in it is a character's fighting style that is only in it for one episode. Also, maybe Full metal alchemist: Brotherhood, it's about how the world would be if alchemie was real. It is very well made

Well I did it with bourbon myself and I had a good idea of what was going on, I didn't even find the flaming unicorns distracting when the LSD kicked in... but I guess tea would work...<.<

Haha. Are you kidding? That's ridiculous. I've never been able to find any LSD (mostly because I don't hang out with people who would fraternize with dealers regularly). I have considered a homemade DMT extraction, but for the most part I play with legal substances. Recently that's been kava, K3, and the occasional cold water extraction of some hydrocodone I have from getting cactus thorns embedded in my leg.

You give a man a fish and you feed him for a day.

You teach a man to fish. And he goes fishing. For his own fish.

He don't need fish from you no more.
Wow, completely different from the sites I use. I've never heard of these, are they download sites? cuz i stream.
Whoa, there, man.

The stuff I posted are blogs, review sites, places to read about anime.

A streaming site, though. That's piracy. I'm not saying I'm without sin, here. I get my anime the best way I can. But, uh, where you get your fix might be something you wanna keep to yourself around mixed company.
I believe those two sites pay licencing fees, could be wrong though, it's happened before.

Shit. Accidentally pressed quote instead of edit.

I would recommend Hajime No Ippo if you have any interest in boxing. It's pretty long, about 70-80 episodes, but it does come to an end.

Not much sexualization other than Ippo being teased for being well endowed.

The fight scenes are great and are actually a little inspiring when you get into it.

Characters have backstories, though you don't delve into many until about midway through.

I think it's pretty down to earth. Only thing I can think about that isn't is when one of the boxers knocks out a bear.

Might not be what you're looking for, but I think you should give it a try.

Hah... Erm.. Yeah, me too! *eyes turn to ground, twists toe into floor* I know a fair amount about alcohol now I've worked behind a bar for a summer. I'm technically a server, but our bartender disappeared today and I had to improvise a Long Island Iced Tea. That was fun. c:

Samurai Champloo and Full Metal Alchemist are the only animes that I really liked. Samurai Champloo is fun and I like it's aesthetic, has some awesome fighting scenes and the humor isn't bad.

Full Metal Alchemist is by far the best anime I've seen. It has a very strong story, great characters, cool fights. It's also fairly free of anime weirdness (sadly not entirely so, but oh well) There are 2 series out now: The original FMA anime, longer, more detailed characterization and with a different story about 1/3 - halfway in. The new FMA: Brotherhood follows the manga closely, has a tighter narrative and is at least, if not more so, as engaging as the first anime.

Try watching Trigun. Haven't read the comics yet, but the show was friggin' awesome. It was somehow short, only one series of twenty-six 25-minute episodes, but that's just very high quality stuff, a classic of the 90s, I'd say. From your list of criterias, everything fits: no tentacles, cool fight scenes, not too complex of a story, no weird stuff (except from the main character's backstory and his origins, which can be argued over as being "weird" or not).

The story revolves around Vash the Stampede, a tall, blond-haired wanderer in the sands of the planet Gunsmoke, in a distant future. The public opinion of this guy is very negative, portraying him as a cold, calculative murderer, a destroyer of cities, a monster able to shoot down multiple dozen men without breaking a sweat. This caused a 60 billion double-dollar ($$60,000,000,000) bounty to be placed on his head, and the planet's most fearless bounty hunters, renowned gangsters on parole, small-time thieves, escaped convicts, to go after him, hoping to receive the reward. However, some of them aren't looking for the enormous reward, but for revenge, or even redemption.

The problem is that this public opinion is wrong, and is the result of overexaggerated rumours and word of mouth. Most of the time, he's at the wrong place at the wrong time, and gets involved in a handful of situations to prevent innocent from being harmed, or is forced to use self-defence to avoid getting killed. Even though he tries to stay anonymous as much as he can, the aforementioned situations often result his cover getting blown to pieces, and every bounty hunter, thief, contract killer, sheriff, armed civilian in the area going after his sorry ass.
This is grounds for lots of narrative, backstory, and fast-paced high-octane shoot-outs.

For more information, try checking out the IMDb page (the show was rated 8.7 out of 10, which is pretty good): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0251439/

Aww, that's why I like it so much :(
It's just so crazy and funny to me.
Particularly this scene which always makes me laugh :3

Plus, it introduced me to the awesomeness of The Pillows so I gotta love it for that :D
