I'm not sure if I should post this here or in the Advice Forums. If necessary please feel free to move this thread to the proper forum.

So I really like MMOs but at the moment I'm having trouble finding one that interests me. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for me. For the record this is what I'm looking for in a MMO.

1: An action-style combat system, one that requires players to aim their attacks and actively dodge/block enemy attacks. In other words nothing where you just tab-target and spam skills until the enemy falls over.

2 I prefer if a game is Free2Play although I may be willing to pay for the game if I think it is interesting. Also no subscription based games please.

3: No Pay2Win aspects. I don't mind if a game has a cash shop as long as I'm not forced to buy something just so I can have a competitive advantage.

These are some examples of games that I've played that fit most of these requirements: Dragon Nest, Vindictus, and TERA.

Well, there's World of Tanks, a game where inter-war to cold war era tanks face each other in a 3rd person perspective. Don't know if the cash shop can be considered Pay2win though.

It's not. The paid items don't really change much in the game. It's all skills in that game.

OT: if you're into FPS, there's TF2 and Warframe. I'd also say Planetside2, but in that one the paid items are a bit of a problem.

Smite might work for you. It's a MOBA, but unlike LoL or DOTA you have to manually aim your attacks and move your character yourself. When you make an account you get about five heroes for free and they have some more on free to play weekly. I haven't played it myself but I've heard good things about it.

Dragon's Prophet and Neverwinter are pretty nice, I don't know if I'd consider it "pay-to-win" though, they do have some annoying aspects like locking inventory slots and a hotkey button to their cash store but there's nothing I can say that is truly an advantage, worth looking into if you want free to play.

If you don't mind subscriptions there's Elder Scrolls Online coming out in April that should be good, if you want something really different though, look up Star Citizen, it won't be out for a bit but it's going to be pretty damn cool.

Well...erm...don't know if you played it already, at least it's not in your list but Guild Wars 2 sounds precisely like what you're looking for:

1. The combat is highly action based. Where in WoW most spells require you to stay still, the exact opposite is the case in GW2: Yo can and SHOULD move around while using your abilities. Also, 5 of the ten abilities you can use are dependent on the weapon you're currently using and wether it is in your main- or off-hand. The other abilities you select from a pool of available choices according to your own playstyle and preferences.
Dodging attacks is entirely a manual process, so no "dodge-rating" here. Blocking is only possible through abilities and those need to be timed right, otherwise you simply hold your shield up for no effect.

2. You pay for the game itself, normal full price for a game, though it might be cheaper now, given how it's been out for a while. After that you never pay anything again unless you want to. And the game constantly gets content-patches, telling a story even beyond the personal story you experience during leveling. For instance we just got through one of the major cities in the game being under attack. And no phasing, the city simply wasn't accesible as the usual peaceful gaming hub anymore.

3. Pay2Win doesn't exist. There is a shop where you can buy cosmetic accesoires of all kinds but that's it. The shop is accessed in game and uses "diamonds" as currency which can either be bought with real money or with (significant amounts) of in game gold. The details on that are not known to me, since I haven't used it so far but yeah, neither crafting ressources nor (stat-bearing) weapons or armor are sold in the shop.

I could on gushing about that game but those are the three accounts you've been asking for so yeah...sounds like Guild Wars 2.

Until recently. Now everyone has a shotgun by default. And you get a questionaire for each character you make that will also unlock another infantry weapon, for free.

Star Trek Online. In the case if requirement numero uno, you can press a key to turn off lock-on. Makes the game much harder though.

Until a few months ago I'd say Guild Wars 2... It does fit everything you're asking for. However these days...

... I don't know. Maybe it's me. I mean, I still consider it by far the best MMORPG in the market, bar none. Maybe it's just the wrong genre for me.

I'll second Warframe. TERA & Spiral Knights may also be worth a look at as well.

I think the genre is currently collapsing on itself. I don't know that there is a good recommendation that won't either vanish or become something else within a year that also meets your standards.

I would also be inclined to recommend Guild Wars 2 as well. It has everything you mentioned and only a one time entry fee of buying the game and no subscription fee. The cash shop is easy to ignore and offers nothing game breaking. As a matter of fact, many of the strategies that they have used to monetize using the cash shop actually punish you for investing in it(mystic keys for example, just don't buy them, ever) outside of character slots, and bank/inventory slots. As of April they are doing a huge game revamp and may prove an excellent time to get in on it. I've tried going back to other MMO's since playing GW2, but just cant get back into them now.

Almost all MMO games coming down the pike are going to be action based. Still, the next two are going to start as subs (ESO & Wildstar) so they do not meet your qualifications.

SMITE is a Moba but it is much better than most out there due to the third person view & action elements. I would recommend giving SMITE a try. I also like SWToR / Forsaken World for ftp MMOs but they are not really action based. GW2 is more of a hybred system that does include some action elements.

I could vouch for DotA 2, allthough you dont have to 'dodge' attacks literally Ill say..as in pushing...donno roll/strafe, you still have to keep your head straight at all times and move out of specific attacks before they hit you for...donno how to put it nicely 'omgwtfbbq' damage? Its free, the only items that can be bought are cosmetics (armor/pets etc etc) and it will defo give you something to do for a bit.
The downside though of DotA 2 will be....you'll be crap at the beginning, and no one is going to hold back their tongue to tell you that. You'll be bickered at..called a feeder... called pathetic, etc etc. As spoken, if theres someone with a short temper in there, that person will tell you how crappy you are. I personally try to help others who donno what they are doing etc, but Ive seen quite a few who have gone flailing and acting as if its the end of the world if they lose this match. Donno, maybe some of them are at gunpoint, they sure as hell do act like it.
Nevertheless though, there are AI matches, where you can train a few heroes up far enough so that your comfortable with playing it online and actually doing a good job. A slight hint in that aspect, if I may, try to get atleast 3 heroes your comfortable with, seeing as some people are insanely fast at clicking their hero, its almost as if they had it favorited and then some kind of keybind to their mouse.

So, if youve got a tough skin, and are willing to put in some hours in a completely pvp game, you might want to check that one out. Only other reccomendations I could give...Rift was 100% free, but if you dont like WoW, you probs wont like that. Nevertheless though it is fun, there is a 'slight' bit of a p2w aspect with it but nevertheless, the tier/gear sets are so overpriced that hardly anyone obtains any gear via that, if memory serves it was like..14 euros for a pair of tier pants haha, so getting a full tier set would cost you around 80 euros. Henceforth, not alot of people do that.

Id much like to try Guildwars 2, but havent played that one yet, so I sadly cant comment on that one.
