i am playing spiral knights which i am not really bored with it but could use something on the side when i am out of lift energy. played pso, shin megami tense online, global agenda, and forsaken world for a bit both got boring due to 1 getting lvls was taking forever and game-play got boring waiting for people to do missions or instances with.

what i am looking for is a game that is fun to play but i don't have to buy (wow and everquest not happening) or something that will not require a monthly gift card to use for item needed to go further or for a subscription, if it has a gift card that i can get for specific things i would not have to buy over and over then its okay. game must have the good character customization i like making characters usually i will have one of every class or race after playing one for a while. if any themes i would limit to sci-fi or rpg type and i like 3d, also nothing too repetitive. so any ideas i would be happy to hear them.

For good character customisation you might want to look at DDO. It's free-to-play in the sense that you have to pay money. Heh, but seriously there's no cost until you reach around level 12ish (cap is 20) when the free quests start to run out. After that you're buying adventure packs to progress.

City of Heroes (superhero) has really really really extensive character customisation, and you can go 1-50 without spending any money - though you can buy additional content, new powersets, costume sets etc.

Fallen Earth (post-apoc) also allows you to go to level cap without spending - shop items being generally mounts (and you can get normal mounts in-game anyway) or appearance items.

Realm of the Mad God is a rather neat game. Once you die, and you will die, you'll lose that character completely but you'd be surprised how many times you'll come back to it.

Dungeons and Dragons Online is fun, although I got bored with it since, unless you pay or farm points up, you'll be doing the same dungeon over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over again.

DC Universe Online is pretty entertaining, even more so if you're into the comics, it's an Action MMO where you left click to attack instead of letting the server do it all and can even pull combos off. Once you hit max level though, it gets terrible since there's nothing but same old dailies / dungeons to do (quests just stop after you do your mentor quest.)

Dragons Nest is another action MMO which uses a rather weird launcher through your browser but is still pretty neat.

Rusty Hearts is a brawler MMO where you wonder around Double Dragons style beating the shit out of things.

APB: Reloaded is a third person shooter MMO where you can be a Cop or Robber (Because I can't remember their actual factions) and has some rather insane customization and chaos you can cause.

Other than that, poke around youtube, Steam or Zams BFFReport [http://www.zam.com/bffreport.html?bffreport=108] and see what piques your interest.

You could wait for Guild Wars 2, it has all a bunch of goodness and leveling is actually fun/doesn't take forever since the leveling curve is flat. Like to get 1 to 2 was 5000 exp, and 21 to 22 was only 10,000 exp. And missions give a lot of exp, and just exploring as gotten me levels.

You do have to buy Guild Wars 2 but it's a pay one time thing rather then a monthly sub.

I'd say give Vindictus a try. It's different; plays more like an action game.

Theres a free to play section in steam with a bunch of mmos in it. You might just want to have a browse there. I can't really speak for the quality of them as I'm not really a fan of the genre but I reckon its worth a look.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
Champions online has gone free to play, its pretty cool and has a really cool character creator, you can make pretty much any hero you want.

My two favorite MMOs of all time are City of Heroes and Dungeons and Dragons Online. Both of them also happen to be free-to-play, so there you go. You could also try Lord of the Rings Online. It's a really polished game with a lot of good things about it, but it's a bit too much like WoW for my tastes and, just like the books and movies, there's way too much damn walking places. And from what I've seen (stopped playing at around level 14) most of the quests are "go kill/collect x amount of x in the overworld" and I HATE that crap. I prefer the way of DDO where everything is a well-designed, instanced dungeon.

the big 3 mmos i play are

City of Heroes

Vindictus

Dungeon Fighter Online

all are free to play, and all are good in they're own ways.

though if you want the most 'bang for your buck' CoH, it turned 8 this year so you will have a TON of content to plow through, hell don't ever need to touch the store, but its not a bad idea if you do (character slots mostly, truly free players only have like 4 slots and the game is built around having alt-o-holism)

World of Tanks is a fun armored combat game with a strong emphasis on teamwork. You start out with a few starter tanks, then work your way up to stronger vehicles as you amass money and XP from battles. It's entirely PvP; gameplay generally consists of partaking in 15 vs. 15 arena-style matches.

It's entirely possible to work your way up to the top tier vehicles without paying a cent, though you may consider spending a little money to speed up the process. Two of the most common methods are buying "premium" tanks that generate money faster and getting a paid subscription that accelerates both money and XP earned per match. Even so, the game's pretty good for avoiding a "pay to win" mentality. Premium tanks tend to have similar performance to equal tier standard ones (sometimes they're even slightly worse) and the matchmaking system does a fairly decent job of keeping a balanced tier spread (though you will find yourself at the bottom of the spread at times, which means your effectiveness will be limited). The only "pay to win" aspect is buying "gold rounds" that do more damage than regular shots, but most people only use those for the more competitive "Clan Wars" mode.

The devs like to refer to the game as an MMO, but I'm not so sure if it fits the moniker. With the exception of Clan Wars, every match is self-contained and there isn't an "overworld" to speak of. The only really persistent aspect of the game is the progress of the individual players. Still, I'd say it's worth a look, regardless if it's truly an MMO or not.

I played DCUO for a while and had a lot of fun, even though I'm not big on MMOs. And it's F2P, so you have nothing to lose.

Puzzle Pirates is one of the best MMOs I've ever played, and one of the only ones I don't regret my time with.
I also liked city of villains.

I'll add some that left a good impression on me:

Brawl Busters (Very fun, fast-paced mmo. It's pretty much only PvP though)

Vindictus (Very actiony, definitely worth a try. Also has a pretty steep difficulty curve wherein player skill becomes key to survival - bosses can kill in one hit at endgame)

Continent of the 9th a.k.a C9 (Even though it's only in CB right now, it's probably one of the better mmos out there. It's got flashy combos reminiscent of Devil May Cry. My current MMO of choice)

All of the above mentioned MMOs are free to play and none of them have that archaic "click to select target -> afk fight" combat system.

I can't really help you. I've somehow committed myself to only playing the worst MMO's.

If you are blessed with an above average IQ score I strongly recommend checking the beta out for The Secret World. It's an MMO game-changer, but isn't for everyone.
Granted, the game seems interesting, but I don't think players would need an "above average IQ". Maybe just a longer attention span.
