Hey guys, so I made a mistake when I bought a new screen months ago and ignored an important factor when purchasing new kit. What type of monitor I should get that will be great for gaming. Stupidly I went for a monitor that I thought looked ok and didn't even look into the specs of the thing. Anyway I've saved up some money and I'm looking into a new monitor and need some advice.

I'm not a pro gamer so I'm not looking for a monitor with crazy minimal lag specs but I am what I call a "visual whore" meaning I love big, pretty, colourful graphics. With that in mind can anyone recommend some good 27" monitors? I've been looking at a Benq XL2720T or an Asus VG278HE but I don't really know enough about monitors to know whats the best buy.

Graphics card I'm running is a GTX 680 so I know it can pump out higher refresh rates and it does come with a dual link DVI.

Your GTX 680 should be able to handle just about anything! Nice card! I too am a graphics whore of the first order. I love to see what is possible.

ASUS is s good name. I've never heard of Beng before.

The ASUS you noted has 3d capabilities. Will you play games in 3d? If so, you could do worse. This is a 1080P LCD/LED. Good link options and 144Hz refresh rate with 2ms response time to eliminate tracing and ensure crisp and clear video playback.

If you don't plan to play in 3D, you could either save some money or get a bigger screen.

Me personally: I have a 39" Vizio LCD/LED 120 mhz refresh rates.

All games seem to be at 60 hz anyway! Probably me doing something wrong, or, the thing lies. Vizio would claim 120 hz meaning 60 for LCD + 60 for LED = 120. I would hope someone told them to knock that off as it is deceptive. Instead, I think a lot of companies do that these days.

But my 39" Vizio LCD/LED is big and beautiful.

If you really want to go nuts, there are crisper higher resolution screens out there, like

http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-28-Inch-Definition-Monitor-U28D590D/dp/B00IEZGWI2/ref=sr_1_5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1397647128&sr=1-5&keywords=samsung+32+inch+computer+monitor

Oh man, I'm tempted.

EDIT: Never mind the 4Ks. I'm reading awful things about gaming with them. You want 60 FPS when you can as it is smoother than the acceptable 30 FPS. I'm reading you can't get there with 4K. Maybe in the future. For now, 1440P is as high as I've heard. Time was Samsung and Apple made 32" 1440 monitors that cost about $1K.

I prefer my $400 39" 120hz LCD LED Vizio. Cheaper and bigger and looks awesome.

I look forward to hearing from you: are you doing 3D? Have you in the past? Any good?

Samsung just came out with some true 60hz 4K 28" monitors that are going for less than $800 [http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=samsung+4k+monitor&_sop=15] if you're willing to go that high. The only complaint I've read about them is that they aren't IPS which means they don't have digital artist level colour reproduction but if they were they'd be much more expensive and have a longer response time which would make them less suitable for gaming anyway. I'm colourblind so I couldn't care less about that factor...I'm tempted to pick one up myself but I worry that it won't get any proper use after I pick up the rift when it comes out later this year (or at least it supposedly launches this year).

Ah another visual whore excellent! Doesn't surprise me that you haven't heard about Benq screens they are a small Aussie company that also produce computer screens and from what I hear they punch above their weight. 3D is something I intend to partake in possibly in the future but for now I'm not overly concerned with it.

I was more interested in the screen because of its refresh rate (apparently this makes games look better???) and I too have heard Asus make decent gaming monitors. 4K is a little out of my price range but once the tech is a little bit more developed and cheaper I will be all over it!

The thing I've heard but not really noticed is that the higher refresh rate helps keep ghosting from happening. If you are watching sports on a 60hz and a guy throws a baseball, it might look like a comet with a tail. Less notable the higher the refresh rates.

Arguably, Plasma has lost the TV war, yet some swear by it. 600, not 60, 600 mhz refresh rates.

Are you limited to 27" ? I'm spoiled with 39". 32", I have to admit, is a bit better, but I'm having fun with the huge screen.

Yeah I'll be having this screen in my room and while I would love a freaking huge screen It wouldn't fit where my desk is a 27" is just about perfect for the size of my room

I'd highly recommend a Dell Ultrasharp U2713H. 2560 x 1440 resolution, 1.07 billion colours, IPS panel, and the ultrasharps are made with the same panels as ones like NEC that tend to cost over a thousand for the same size.
