I would recommend the Monster Hunter series, but I don't think any of those has been released on PC (at least not outside Japan).

A few people have recommended Avernum, which is pretty great. The remakes of the first two are really fun. You should try Geneforge by the same developer (Spiderweb Software). Interesting setting, open-ended stories based around various factions and fun turn based combat where your fellow party members are various creatures you summon to aid you. The MC's classes are all variations on the summoner type, rather than your typical knight, rouge, mage, etc, but they're still pretty varied. Visually they're very basic, like all Spiderweb's games, and there is very little music but the sparse presentation doesn't harm them in the least, imo.

My only suggestion is The Witcher 3 - Wild Hunt.
...sadly, I don't get to create my own character in The Witcher. I'm sure Geralt is a bad ass, but he's someone else's creation and I like creating my own badasses! That's the challenge!
Well if you can get over that, at least in my opinion, somewhat silly requirement then go play The Witcher 3. It's easily the best RPG I have ever played and would be the best game overall if I didn't enjoy Paradox Strategy games that much.
If you can't then I am sorry, there are just not that many good modern RPGs with Character Creator and you seem to have allready tried all the ones that are good or at least ok.
Yeah I'm gonna have to second this. I know there are some things people can't live without in games but a character creator shouldn't be one of them. Fact of the matter is that when it comes to RPGs it's totally at the discretion of the developer whether you can create your own character or not, much like you can't choose the overall role of your character. A couple of people did choose not to play TW3 from early on for this reason - their loss honestly.

But its good practise to buy games only if you think you'll enjoy them so it's up to you.

In truth, I actually played through about an hour of the first Witcher game a few years back and thought to myself "What if I could create a character in this world?" or "What would it be like to be a _______ in this world?" How would the story be different? How would this new character navigate the world around them? From that point, I really lost interest quickly, not because the game had bad mechanics or it was a bad story, I just didn't feel too invested in Geralt as a character because he wasn't my creation. I couldn't internalize as him, I couldn't get behind what he'd be thinking. I'm sure that my opinion of wanting a game to allow for me to use my imagination is silly, but it's what I like in a game. That's why I posted it that way in the OP.

I have heard wonderful things about the Witcher series and I'm definitely open to trying them someday, but until then I really don't want to spend money on a game that I won't play.

Still, thank you guys for your suggestion!

The Witcher is experienced best after reading the books. It's definitely not a "be this guy" story. It's a "travel with this guy (and those other characters you know and love) again" story.

Geez, you palyed a lot of good ones. I'll try to think of something:

- You mentioned that you played and liked Shadowrun Returns. How about giving Dragonfall and/or Hong Kong a shot?

- Jade Empire. It's pretty damn good martial arts Action RPG set in fantasy medieval China. The only thing that may not fit your criteria is that character cretion is a bit simple: you just pick a model, basically, and play.

- Seriously, play Planescape: Torment. It has at least one HD mod and if you dislike old isometric RPG's because of the combat system, then you are in luck, because outside of a few random encouters and optional boss, most conflicts can be resolved wth your knowledge and charisma. Also, please DO play as a mage to get most out of the game and check the internet on how to become one quickly.

- Fallout 1 and 2. They look old, yes, but the didn't age POORLY. Also, they are fun, have great stories and completely turn-based combat.

- I can't say that I am recommending or not recommending Arcanum. On one hand, it has a rather flexible character creation system, engaging story and sidequests and interesting world, but on the other hand it is buggy, companions are mostly boring and it looks like crap. So check the gameplay videos and if you don't dislike what you see, give it a try maybe.

EDIT: I don't know if it counts as an actual RPG, but I've been having fun with Darkest Dungeon.

Sounds like you could try the jrpg classics. I dont know what they are considered to be, but smt3 and skies of aradia are popular.

Just remembered another pretty good one: Nethergate: Resurrection. A pretty unique isometric RPG set in Roman occupied Britain. You can play as either the Romans or the Britains, so there are in effect 2 different games within it.

It's on Steam for the low price of 3.99, although goes on sale for less than a quid frequently.

It's from the makers of Avernum, Avadon and Geneforge, a few other great classic styled RPG's.
