I've found I have a lot of time lately and haven't played an RPG in quite some time, so I was wondering what anyone could recommend.

I've recently played these titles:
Knights of the Old Republic
Mass Effect
Final Fantasy XIII
Fallout 1,2 and 3

So no need to recommend them, I want something with a big world and plenty of action and a good plot. Preferably not turn based combat, but if you think it's good then I might give it a shot. So what can any of you recommend and why?

well it would depend console or pc?
Good point, I should probably say what I got:

My PC is pretty good, can run most games out lately. Last new game that was on it was Batman Arkham Asylum.

Wii
PS2 (Saving for a PS3)
PSP
DS
XBOX 360

There you go, sorry about that.

I would say Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age: Origins, and also Elder Scrolls IV. Open world, pretty good combat and good story. ME2 is great because it's a good sequel to the first one. But if you don't like fantasy RPG's, then I would just suggest ME2.

You could play Oblivion. It's story is pretty forgettable though. But if you think Fallout 3 had a great story you might think Oblivion has a great story too. A lot to do, tons of quests, it looks good, huge open world, you might like it.

It's weak on plot, but strong on everything else: Demon's Souls - truly compelling gameplay

It's strong on plot, but has turn-based combat: Lost Odyssey (at least the combat is slightly interactive) - excellent story, definitely a Hironobu Sakaguchi production in terms of story quality

I haven't played it yet, but the new Resonance of Fate looks pretty intriguing, you might want to investigate that

Personally I would recommend Dragon Age: Origins [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.169176-Dragon-Age-Origins-Review] for the reasons I mentioned in this link. However, I'll admit that I make the game sound better than it actually is (at least for most people), so you'll want to get some more opinions. However since you liked other BioWare games I'm guessing you might also enjoy this one.

I agree with Elder Scrolls IV. Any aspects you don't like, there will surely be a Mod to fix it for you. Nexus.com has about 3,000 or 4,000 mods for the game.

I can't afford Mass Effect 2 at the moment, Dragon Age was on special at the local game store, I might look into it, thanks :)

Dark Cloud 1 and 2 on the PS2. If you can find them, they're pretty cheap now, and they are incredibly good.

You need to play Jade Empire. Martial arts based combat, about as real time as you can get. Ten times better than Mass Effect II.

Pick up Neverwinter Nights 1 and/or 2 + expansions. You can get them for a song these days, and they'll provide days of enjoyment. Going back further, Baldur's Gate 1/2 and expansions, also on the cheap. There's plenty of custom content for all of it, with NWN particularly having been easy to create stuff for, with some fan-made campaigns rivaling the official ones in length and quality.

Final Fantasy VI. A truly amazing game that will astound you with its ability to tell an emotional story with lovable characters despite the Super Nintendo's technical limitations. If you haven't played it yet, I highly recommend you do. It's available on the Game Boy Advance, but unless you want to try getting a hold of the original Super Nintendo version, that's the only legal way you'll get it.

Edit: Duh, Mass Effect 2. Dang, it's so much better than the first. I loved the first, and this one beats it in pretty much every way.

Also, I've heard Lost Odyssey is really good. Haven't played it yet, but I definitely plan to.

Edit #2: AND HOLY CRAP. The World Ends with You, on the DS. One of the best games I have ever played. Truly an amazing RPG in every way. Love it.

I played them back in the day, they were good. I liked the first one more though.

Played it, I just listed my most recent played. Still, was a good game in most aspects, I found the story and mini games rather bland though.

It's cheap now, I haven't played that in some time. I might have to give that a try, thank you.

Well if you haven't played Mass Effect 2 then that should be #1 on your list.

2 JRPG's I would recommend that completely deviate from your traditional combat mechanics found in said games are.......Tales of Vesperia, and Resonance of Fate(which I cannot fucking put down. That game is the shit!). Google those 2 and let me know what you think!
I think I might have a look at Resonance of Fate, last Tales game I played was Symphonia, might look into that one you suggested later, thanks.

I've played all the mains ones currently out, thanks for the recommendation though.

I'd go play FFX, the Golden Sun games, Legend of the Dragoon, any of the Tales games, the Xenosaga trilogy, Star Ocean 3

X- Because that one just stands out for me for some reason

Golden Sun- Because although it has turn based fights, they play out really well. Also, the switch in perspective in the second game where you play as the opposite side and see not only the truth, but what the previous game's team looks like to them, it really just puts things into perspective.

Legend of the Dragoon- Because it took turn based combat and made it good. The game had several good plot twists, an amazing world, and it remains to be one of the best PS1 games I've played.

The Tales games (excluding Symphonia's sequel)- Because they are action RPGs where you have enemy encounters, but most of them are visible and you actually control the character rather than issue orders. The ones I played all had great 60 hour stories and enjoyable characters.

Xenosaga- I really don't know where to begin here. Is it the fact that humanity is under attack from alien life forms that just barely exist in our plane of reality so that they can hurt us, but we can't hurt them without certain technology? Or should I go on about how the plot revolves around secrets that could only be described as biblical? Maybe I should say it's because the look of the environments, characters, and enemies are just spectacular? No, I'm going to go with one word: Albedo. The most f*cked up character you will ever meet. In fact, I'm almost certain that this guy is channeling Silent Hill. But then, that will happen when you discover that you will outlast everything, including the universe.

Star Ocean 3- Don't look up this game's plot if you don't know it. The twist that comes from it will literally make your jaw drop. The combat's somewhere between the tales games and FFXIII. Also, the story is really interesting (you go from space travel to being trapped on a planet in the medival ages to... well things get interesting from there.)

Deus Ex- Cyber punk fps/rpg that?s older but still one hell ova game.

TSE:III Morrowind- Much better than Oblivion, show?s it?s age but damn good and lots of things to do.

Demons Soul?s: Hard, evil, awesome, epic, and only on the PS3.

Never winter knights, both games and all expansions. ok to damn good depending on the campaign for single player, and never ending online campaigns.

And Dragon age for some good Dark/ Gothic high fantasy goodness.
