I've found I have a lot of time lately and haven't played an RPG in quite some time, so I was wondering what anyone could recommend.

I've recently played these titles:
Knights of the Old Republic
Mass Effect
Final Fantasy XIII
Fallout 1,2 and 3

So no need to recommend them, I want something with a big world and plenty of action and a good plot. Preferably not turn based combat, but if you think it's good then I might give it a shot. So what can any of you recommend and why?

well it would depend console or pc?
Good point, I should probably say what I got:

My PC is pretty good, can run most games out lately. Last new game that was on it was Batman Arkham Asylum.

Wii
PS2 (Saving for a PS3)
PSP
DS
XBOX 360

There you go, sorry about that.

Ever played Shadow Hearts?
Fucking ninjas..

Yeah Shadow Hearts: Covenant is the shit man! It is turned based but there is alot of stragedy involved, especially later on. Can't speak for the third one, but the first one is okay too, tho its heaps different to the second.

Star Ocean. Fucking Star Ocean. Any of them. Tho the second one will set you back $60 on ebay (in australia at least) and you can get the first and second ones on PSP (laybyed the second one today (XDXDXDXDXDXD))

Old Final Fantasys, as in VIII and IX (VII is good, but waaaaaay over rated in my opinion)

Not really an RPG per-say, but Drakengard is hella good. If you can stand the repetitive combat, the story is one of the best I have ever seen in any game.

Disgaea? SRPG it is, and you could literally play it forever

Odin Sphere is epic good too, tho its more of a side scroller with RPG elements (man that makes it sound like crap) but it is really good.

Replaying Fallout 3. If your bored of it, you aren't playing it right. Trust me, I picked it back up after beating it completely, and it still holds up.

more fanboyism to the best game ever: you would need to like action games, as will zombies, but after that, the "role playing" (aside from RPG ELEMENTS) in survival crisis z is amazing.
no other game made me feel THIS MUCH like its ME who is in the game, which is kinda what RPGs
are supposed to do right?

quick thing, its for XP, though there is a "vista patch". unless pc means Mac in your case your windows would have to be vista/XP so...

You have to play Morrowind and its expansions, probably my favourite game of all time.

The Golden Sun series is a must. Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver are shaping up to be a fantastic set of remakes. Final Fantasy IV DS if you want to go back to one of the earliest examples of "epic FF story," even though the voice acting is iffy.

There's also Mother 3, but that's not easy to come by, if at all...

Two words: CHRONO TRIGGER. It is a jrpg, and while I usually don't like them this one is just kind of kick ass considering it has you time travelling and it gives you the opportunity to punch out Cthulhu, also it has alternate endings but none of that sissy morality shit.

Okami and Dragon Warrior VIII are good on the PS2 (Okami is also available on the Wii.) For the Wii, Twilight Princess is really good. For the PSP, There;s an upcoming remake of Persona 3, which is quite a good game, as is the remake of Lunar: Silver Star Story (I believe it's called Silver Harmony, but I'm not sure). For the DS, the Pokemon series is pretty fun; so is the Phoenix Wright (which is technically more of a visual novel, but hey) series. For the 360, I mostly play adventure/horror games, so I can't tell you.

I'm playing it again, but it's nice to take a break now and then.

I've played all of them except Odin Sphere, I'll look into it, thanks.

I can't believe no one has said Vampire: the Masquerade yet. It has an amazing story with awesome characters(Jack is the man), very fun combat with rpg elements but running in real-time, REAL vampires not those twilight...things, and awesome character customization that actually changes how your supposed to play(Nosferatu sneaking and such).

I reccomend the .Hack series. Its a jrpg hack and slasher but the story is good and the scenery in the G.U. trilogy is freaking beautiful.
