Hi,
Due to a sudden influx of free time, I'm looking for a new strategy game to play. However, the only computer I use much any more is my netbook, with a 1.6gh core and 1gb of RAM.
Does the Escapist have any ideas? I'm fairly used to complex strategy games, having played Civilization, Rome: Total War and Sins of a Solar Empire to death on the desktop. However, the earlier Civ games don't work on my netbook because of resolution problems thast I've spent hours trying to fix with .INI files.

Requirements:
Must run on a standard netbook with 1024X600 res, 1.6gh, 1GB RAM, GMA 950.
Must downloadable - My USB dvd drive broke. Perferably Steam/GAME/D2D/GoG.
Must be half-decent. I'm used to good, complex strategy games
And I've already got these.
Age of Empires (all of them)
Homeworld
Warcraft(s)
Rise of Natiions
Cossacks

Anyway, might sound a bit precise, but such is life gaming on a netbook.

Thanks in advance.

I don't know it's requirements but TA (total annihilation) pretty old game, so I figure it would work.

Command and conquer style game but you can build a boat load of units (I think the cap is 350), very fun game, there's 2 DLC that I know of.

There is also a sequel of the same name but with kingdoms at the end, it has dragons and is more magically orientated.

Hard to go wrong with the Warhammer 40k Dawn of War series. Dawn of War 1 is more like a regular strategy game with base building and such. Dawn of War 2 focuses more on small squad management, thought it may not run on your comp.

I once tried Dark Crusade. Nowhere near my specs. I did say it was a netbook.

Age of Wonders 2: The Wizard's Throne
Age of Wonders 2: Shadow Magic.

Both are stand alone titles. The campaigns are really good and it has some fun multiplayer.

Galactic Civilizations 2

Those are actually the suggestions I was going to give, seriously. Don't see why you'd want to buy Wizard's Throne though except maybe for the campaign when Shadow Magic is essentially the same thing only better.

But yeah, GalCiv2, awesome 4x strategy game. One of my favourites in fact. I love the sheer sense of scale it's got as well as the massive variety and player freedom, not to mention the obvious enjoyment there is to be had in designing and building your own ships.

Yeah, I almost only opted Shadow magic but I didn't want to exclude Wizard's Throne because of the campaign. Wizard's Throne was the one that got me into AoW. I figured the OP was going to be playing single player so figured Wizard's Throne was worth a mention. The campaign is pretty good.

As for Gal Civ 2, it's easy for me to accidentally spend my 3 hours I have for gaming just building a couple ships.

I can't think of another strategy game that invests me in quite the same way. There's just something about spending hours worth of gametime building up research, buying technologies from alien races, and gathering enough of a budget just so you can spend another hour designing the ultimate ship, your own personal Enterprise or Death Star or whatever other sci-fi comparison you can think of. And then when finally it launches, amazing!

I still keep screenshots of some of my ships over the years. My last playthrough in particular was downright epic.

Now THAT was a scenario to remember. Love it when a game is capable of creating memorable and unique story for the player.

The two strategy games I play on my netbook are Frozen Synapse and Defcon.

Frozen Synapse is a turn based strategy game. But, turns are played out simultaneously. No standing around, waiting for the enemy to shoot you while they take their turn nonsense.

My favorite thing about it is that you don't have to be on-line at the same time as your friends to play a game and you can be in more than one game running at a time. Since I have a couple friends that can only be on at odd hours, it is the prefect game for me to play with them. Well worth a look.

It is available on Steam for $24 for a two-pack. I traded off my spare for another game and there is a thread in the forums for such trades if you don't have a friend to do it with.

Defcon takes inspiration from the ending of Wargames. You control one of the world's nuclear powers, with the goal of killing the other powers' population. It is an RTS that runs very well, even with a touch pad. Though, I would suggest using a mouse.

The game is a bit slower paced than most RTS. But, that makes it great for a netbook.

Defcon is far cheaper than Frozen Synapse, but it doesn't have as large of a player base. Defcon is $10 on Steam and has a demo.

Look around on GOG, tons of Strategy games there. I was addicted to Master of Magic for a while, really fun. Also, look up Guardians of Graxia, on Steam. It's a mix of turn based strategy with a TCg, while letting you earn points to permanently upgrade your units.

Grand Strategy:
Europa Universalis 3
Victoria 2

RTS:
Company of Heroes
Empire Earth
Starcraft

Management:
Tropico
Evil Genius
Zoo Tycoon
Caesar 3

If you can find and run it, Theme Hospital and Dungeon Keeper 2 are both excellent games.

Multiwinia is a pretty simple RTS that can run on just about any computer that isn't coal-powered.

I would also recommend the "Myth" games by Bungie, they're "old but gold"
