Looking for a PC game in an oddly specific genre

I've always had a fondness for that specific sort of... action game I suppose? I don't know if it has a specific name, but it's that sort like the Dynasty Warriors series. Where the player character contributes and turns the tide of large-scale battles with armies of NPC's on either side. Dynasty Warriors doesn't appear to be available, but does anyone know of any PC game that could scratch this itch for me? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Star Wars Battlefront 1 and 2 does this and I believe there is a Star Wars franchise sale on Steam right now so you're in luck!

It's not quite the same, in that there aren't many set piece battles and the pacing/approach is very different, but Mount and Blade allows you to be a indivudal (albeit a very tough individual) participating in a large battle.

Truth be told I don't really know of any other offerings that even come close to doing what Dynasty Warriors does.

Yeah. Viking has some segments, but there's only about four of them I think, in like the whole game.
In my opinion, the game that did it best, and my first experience with the genre was an old Koei game for the gamecube called 'Mystic Warriors'.

There aren't any.
Being a massive fan of Dynasty Warriors myself I've spent a long time looking as well.

There is an online version of Dynasty Warriors. Dynasty Warriors: BB. Which is based on the Dynasty Warriors 5 generation. It's okay, but it's pretty basic, the localisation is poor and there aren't that many players.

Funnily enough, I've been playing the berserker class in "Tera" recently and that's reminded my of Dynasty Warriors at points. Only that class though and not enough for me to recommend it.

I might buy a new PS3 just to play some Dynasty Warriors, that itch hasn't been scratched in a while.

If it would ever gorram come out and not be an MMO, Kingdom Under Fire 2 would probably be right up your alley depending on your tolerance for light RTS elements. You're a dude with an army that you lead into battle and you hack&slash your way through your opponents alongside your troops.

But yeah, the PC doesn't have many of those. If you just want to cut swathes through large hordes of enemies, dungeon crawlers like the Diablo franchise or Torchlight II could help, but if you specifically want to feel like you're part of an army and one of the deciding forces behind their victory... eh... maybe you could try Brutal Legend? I don't know what it's like myself beyond the fact that it's a hack&slash game that adds RTS elements later on. The campaign modes of Warcraft III and its expansion, which focus heavily on hero units?

It's certainly not the same, but partial-strategy is probably the closest you'll get on the PC.

There is a One Piece (Anime) Crowd Fighting game, but I neither know the name of it or if its any good. Also, its consoles only (possibly PS3 only too for all I know).

There is also a Gundam themed one, a launch title for PS3, but its shite apparently (and exclusive).

You might want to analyse what it is you like in Dynasty Warrior style games, as the is a pretty niche genre in and of itself, but you can find some of the aspects you like most in other games.

Personally, I've always wanted a Zone of the Enders style Crowd Fighter ever since that large scale fight sequence in Second Runner. It just seems so apt for it.

Prepare for disappointment, because hack'n'slash games (in the God of War / Devil May Cry mold) are very rare on PC. The only ones I can come up with are Lord of the Rings: Conquest and maybe the Two Towers and Return of the King movie games from the early 2000s. I haven't played Conquest, but from what I've heard and played, the latter two aren't bad at all, though they're more like linear action games and actually aren't very close to what Dynasty Warriors is like. The NPCs in those games are little more than window dressing to make you feel like you're part of a greater battle.

Warriors Orochi is on PC and is directly related to the Dynasty Warrior's franchise. It plays exactly like a Dynasty Warriors games.

Warriors Orochi 3 is the most recent (i think?) and has a PC release.

How come no one mentioned Mount & Blade yet? Game where you fight alongside your army and your skill in combat can turn even battles.

Unfortunately the Steam versions of Battlefront 2 are broken, nigh unplayable. The retail copies work fine as I discovered. Incidentally Battlefront 2 is one of my favorite games of all time, especially considering how much I modded it.

Mount and Blade is a little slower paced than what I think the OP is looking for, though. Doesn't mean it's not a good game though.

Well I want one of these crowd action games too. Planet Side 2 almost works for this if you get a sunder to have a spawn battle at one of the bases.
Two other games that also kinda but not really work for this is Killing Floor, or MOBA games. Like I said kinda but not really. It's close-ish, but I'm pretty sure that wannabe crowd element is the only reason I like playing those games.
