After watching the Game Overthinkers (MovieBobs) episode on Level Grinding I'm in the mood to play a JRPG, but discovered I actually don't OWN any on my PC! Just checked Steam and there's nothing but haven't found anything.

Can anyone recommend one? I don't care how old.
FYI: Already own Chrono Trigger, it's good but I'm just not feeling it.

I think there's a Final Fantasy 7 version for PC. Only the best-selling FF ever. And do you have only a PC? I didn't understand.

perhaps "Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale" is something for you?

one of my favorite JRPG's on the PC is "Ys: The Ark of Napishtim", but it can be pretty hard to find on the PC

Both great choices.

Persona is more serious and in-depth while Recettear is mostly fun and goofy. Serious vs. (Fairly)Casual.

Persona is tempting, but I don't want to have to pirate anything really! Can't exactly run a PSP game with a PC. I was rather hoping stuff like FFVII would be available on Steam- I'm appalled this isn't so!

Without emulation, your choices are limited.

Grandia 2 was ported to the PC, I think. Recettear is pretty awesome too, but it's not a traditional JRPG.

That Item Shop story? Yes, that did look pretty interesting. Still a pretty high price for an indie RPG though (or maybe I'm just too used to everything being £3 on steam sales!)

All I can think of for JRPGs on the PC is Final Fantasy 7 and Final Fantasy 8, if you can find them used, The Last Remnant, Recettear and Septerra Core: Legacy of the Creator.

If you're looking for PC JRPGs, you're choices are going to be rather limited. Here are my suggestions for console games, though, along with what systems they're available for:

Final Fantasy IV (SNES, GBA, DS, called Final Fantasy II on SNES)
Earthbound (SNES)
Mother 3 (GBA, Japan only but with English Fan Translation)
Golden Sun (GBA)
Golden Sun: The Lost Age (GBA)
Golden Sun: Dark Dawn (DS)
Pokemon: Any Version (GB, GBC, GBA, DS)
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (SNES)
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga (GBA)
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time (DS)
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story (DS)
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor (DS)
Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen (NES, DS, called Dragon Warrior IV on the NES)
Paper Mario (N64)
Paper Mario: Thousand-Year Door (GCN)

That's about all I can think of at the moment. I've played more, but these are worth a look into. I also apologize for the glut of Nintendo consoles, but I don't own any consoles not made by Nintendo. So...yeah. And other than Recettear, I don't know of any PC JRPGs.

Persona 3 or 4 leaps to mind.

Or FF 5-10 if you're feeling inclined in that direction.

If you have a PS1 or emulator (or PSN), you could go for Vagrant Story, Xenogears, Parasite Eve (1, not 2, which isn't an RPG per se).

Some very good suggestions, I suppose if I do head down emulation I have some good options open here. Just wish they'd hurry up and make a successor to TWEWY already.
Downloading the Item Shop tale Demo now.

tales of destiny 2 (action-oriented, a bit like super smash bros)
disgaea (more strategy-like)

Tales of Phantasia for the SNES.

Not that I would condone the use of an emulator of course...

The Last Remnant is on steam and has as much grinding as you can handle. But if you want to spend the rest of your life grinding then get Diablo 2.

PCSX and PCSX2 are perfectly legal Playstation 1/2 emulators for your PC. Though you need to get the BIOS off of your own PS to get it to work, and have either the disc in the drive or an ISO (made off of a copy of the game you own, of course)
