Get the aforementioned emulator and play Star Ocean 3.
I assume you're referring to "Till the End of Time," in which case I'll ask you more about it since I have an unplayed copy lying around in my house.
Also, Skies of Arcadia if you can control your battle system-induced hate twitches, Tales of Symphonia for a fun combat system, nice romp through JRPG cliches, and surprisingly good story after a good bit.
Recettear is also highly recommended, along with Earthbound.
Yeah, that's the one.
The story isn't anything spectacular, though it is less cliche-ridden than most JRPGs. People seem to either really like it or really hate it. Good news is it asks you at the beginning if you want the option to skip scenes, you get a choice at the beginning of every one so if you start to dislike it you can just skip them all.
If you've played a Star Ocean game before, go ahead and skip down the next 2 paragraphs. If you haven't, basically, when you get into a fight, you're put in a large square or other shaped area that you and the enemy can run around freely inside the area and throw out attacks whenever. Level ups and whatnot are your normal stuff, aside from a feature specific to the 3rd one, level cap is 255 I think, I've never actually hit it though, I'm not sure there's really a need to.
It's got a crafting system, though you won't use it a whole lot until you've beaten the main game and go on to take on the post game dungeons and bosses. However, after you get to a certain fairly early point in the main story, you get the ability to more or less break the early part of the game and max out your attack stat(not really a big deal later on) with crafting. Your choice if you want to do it, any FAQ will tell you how.
In any case, TLDR: Try it out, you can skip scenes until you get to the tutorial battle, the actual gameplay is the entire draw to the series.
