Just trying to see if maybe I missed a recent title that is very, very similar to the game-play of FF Tactics. Nothing like might and magic. That's close but misses the personal touch.

Valkyria Chronicles!

It's a SRPG that does some very interesting and original things with gameplay!

- The graphics are gorgeous
- You customize your party and each character is unique, just like Final Fantasy Tactic!
- The music was composed by Hitoshi Sakimoto, the composer of Final Fantasy Tactics!
- When a party member goes down you have 3 turns to get to them or you lose them forever, just like Final Fantasy Tactics!

Seriously, if you love SRPGs then you have to play this game. It is more lighthearted than Tactics in terms of story, but there are so many fresh and interesting ideas with the combat system that a fan of the genre is bound to love the game!

There is a demo on PSN! Give it a shot!

Well someone beat me to posting Valkyria Chronicles, but another series that you can try out for that is the Disgaea series as they are SRPGs and are quite fun.
Plus, come on how could you not love these things:

Then if you have a chance the International version of FF XII made it more like Tactics when it came to customization for the characters in that every character can have a specific job class. Sadly you can't change the class, but you can customize it more. But this is also me trying to get people to try FF XII International more. XD

The disgaea series? Be warned though they are wacky and lighthearted for most of the game, which is a different feel to FFT. It is only at the end do the stories get depressing.

Also, if you are a min/maxer you might want to leave a will before you play the game because there are some SERIOUS customization options that you can dunk hundreds of hours into. Luckily, you only need the most basic understanding of mechanics to finish the story.

Gonna be the wild card and suggest XCOM: Enemy Unknown. Not much story, but more challenging than most SRPGs in recent years.

Pretty much anything from the Tactics Ogre series is also a close match. I'll vouch for the GBA (The Knight of Lodis) as being very FFT-y.

Fire Emblem Awakening. It plays a lot like FF: Tactics, right down to the transverse-able map and enemy encounters.

If you don't have a 3DS, you can try one of the other games in the Fire Emblem series (Sacred Stones for the GBA is most like Awakening), or if you have a PSP, give Wild Arms XF a try.

Much of the best SRPGs are on DS / 3DS & PSP / Vita.

Joan D'Arc PSP, very close to FF tactics and recommended by many FFT fans.
Tactics Ogre PSP
Luminous Ark 1 & 2 DS
Advance Wars Dual Strike & Dark Conflict DS
Ragnorok Tactics PSP
Disgaea Series PS2 / PSP / PS3

Sting's SRPG's are some of my favorites, like Knight's in the Nightmare and the Union Series on GBA, DS & PSP.

Also
Vanguard Hearts 1&2 PS1 (might be on PSN) IIRC there is a new addition to the series on XBLA / PSN, doesn't look as good as the originals though.

This is my fave SRPG (even though the guy in the video doesn't know what he is doing)

Warsong / Langrisser / Langrisser 2 / Der Langrisser MD & SNES
Langrisser 4 PS1

The Langrisser series is a mix of Advanced Wars & Fire Emblem highly recommended with GREAT music, although you will need english rom patches for every one apart from Warsong. Langrisser 3 & 5 haven't been fan translated.
