Looking for action-RPG.

Hi there escapees.

I've been having an itch for an action-RPG and the Steam-sale has made it the right time to find one. It has to have low graphical requirements though, since I'm intending to run it on my toaster as well. That means no Dark Souls and no Skyrim. What I had in mind is something older like Fable 1 or Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance.

The other alternative is good, recent indie games that aren't all that graphically taxing. An example is the indie game Apotheon, where I was very forgiving towards the clunky 2d-combat because of the beautiful aesthetics. Basically, I'm looking for hack-and-slash games, but with phenomenal world-building and design. The story is itself is less important, but I do want good, fast gameplay.

I mostly want to run it on my laptop during rainy vacation days, and I doubt it even runs Oblivion.

I'd much rather have Ninja Gaiden than Dark Souls - I'm in the mood for some fast-paced hack and slash.

You could try Rogue Legacy. Low impact (System wise) rogue-like hack-n-slasher. Worth the full price of the game, in my opinion, though it's heavily on sale at the moment.

I'm not sure if my recommendation is any good, because I'm not sure what your system can handle. Check system requirements just in case.

So, outside of what everyone's already mentioned, I'd recommend Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. Pretty neat open-world action-RPG. A little MMO-y at times, but a good chunk of content there.

Again, though, you're mentioning games that came out during the PS2/XBOX era as your benchmark and Amalur is a PS3/360-era game, so certainly check system requirements before you buy anything. It would help if we knew your hardware, just so we can see if you can at least run a game in potato-settings.

I do know it runs Bully from 2006 and I'd say early 360 games is the graphical limit. I have also played an ungodly number of hours of Crusader Kings 2 (2012), and Hegemony 1 + 2 on that thing. But those games are not all that graphically intensive. My guess is that the limit lies somewhere around Oblivion for my laptop. I am not a PC-gamer, but one of those console peasants. So PC-gaming is not my area of expertise, unfortunately.

Thanks man. I just bought it and it is a fun time-waster. I was always very skeptical towards pixel graphics, since I don't have any nostalgia for it, but the gameplay is very fun.

If you're looking for fast-paced and a good world, I'd highly recommend Grim Dawn and Torchlight 2. Love these games to death,though Torchlight 2 definitely aims for a more tongue-in-cheek approach.

Might also want to give Kingdoms of Amalur at look, though if you can't run Skyrim that might not work.

Unepic is quite good, until a certain boss when everything goes down the drain and you just uninstall the game.

 

[Worgen]

You might want to try Axiom Verge. Its a fantastic metroidvania type game with amazing music.
Cave Story is another great low system requirement game.

Both of these are sort of metroid type games that have deeper worlds then you would expect.
