I wanted to post something which is, for me, the gravest problem in all of video games; the dearth of anything for nerds to play.
I am a *colossal* nerd/hardcore/serious gamer. Sadly, none of these words (indeed, *no* words synonymous with them) have a universally-accepted definition, so I'm going to explain exactly what I mean, so there's no confusion, or at least, no *honest* confusion.
I am referring to an *attitude* about what games are for you. For most of the gamers of today, they seem to be just something you do to have fun. They have *never* been this for me. For me, a game is a world to explore, and the more that it gives you to explore, allows you to do/improve, or enables you to forget that there is an outside world by drawing you into the world of the game, the better. The size of the game world, the capabilities of the player character, the number/scale of the improvements that can be made to the player character in a numerical sense, the quality of the writing, the lore of the land, and most importantly, how seriously the game takes itself (ideally, a lot!) are all factors in whether I'll be able to enjoy a game or not. Games are very, very, very serious business.
I bring this up because in my experience, these are the very qualities that are (or seem to be) rapidly decreasing in modern gaming, so I'm looking for one of two things.
1. Reccomendations for a video game (of any age, for any system, by any kind of developer; big or small,) which exemplifies these qualities I've outlined.
2. The name of a forum or website which specializes in, or requires, or rewards this kind of outlook on gaming. A place online where hardcore gaming nerds like me, who seek legitimate escapism over "fun" can go to discuss games with others who share this general ethos, or better yet, to plan out some kind of strategy for rebuilding the niche that video games used to be.
I am dead serious about this. Please don't respond to say that you don't see why I can't just have fun. I assure you, it's not going to help.
