If you're looking for quick punchlines then look no furthur then Dilbert. Just chucking it out there because it amuses me.

Also Marjane Satrapi's 'Persepolis' 1 + 2 makes for a fascinating read. Pretty sure they've just made it into a movie recently. in a comic book style that is

After the eye-clawingly bad cinematic abuse of Alan Moore's comics, I have little hope of any comic I truly love making it to the screen as anything better than a tortured mockery of the original. LXG - the horror! the horror!
True, but consider that it's James Cameron producing and probably directing it, and that he bought the rights to it close to ten years ago and has sat on them until he can do it justice, so it's not like it'll be a low budget quick buck cash in. (Also, not due out until maybe 2010/2011 either)

I'm not a big fan of reading comics, but there's one exception: Hellboy. The unique art style and great writing are definitely recommended. I especially love the "Box full of evil", "Wake the Devil" and "The Conquerer Worm" storylines.

Weren't sure if you are looking for webcomics or not, so I'll try suggesting something from both.

WEBCOMICS

Perry Bible Fellowship for pure insanity.

Something Positive when it doesn't get all overly mopey.

Questionable Content for...I don't know, it just has a hold on me for some reason.

Dr McNinja because of the sheer awesomeness.

COMICS

If you want something different, try Maus. Maus is awesome, in the way that Schindler's List totally kicks ass!

I also got into the Sin City series after the movie came out because I'm a complete poseur.

I would also suggest tracking down some of the old stuff and looking at it through 21st century eyes. You will be quite amused.

what would anyone recommend in the way of manga?
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. The anime's already wrapped up the story (It was produced first), but the manga has the potential to become something greater. And that's the core principle behind the entire series: Becoming greater than you were before, surpassing yourself and others, and continuing to advance. That's why the spiral is so prominent in Gurren Lagann. It's all about the drills.

"Don't believe in yourself! I believe in you! Believe in me, who believes in you!"
