I've been thinking about Spore a lot recently. It always bothered me how the game was broken up into stages, and how it felt so childish. So, fellow escapists, I have come seeking your assistance: Are there other "evolution" games out there and, if so, what are they like?

Darkspore just came out recently. Its the Spore creature creator except you go on a Diablo style dungeon crawl to evolve.

edit: arg, wrong thread.

The various stages of Spore were inspired by specific games - I'm sure there's a list somewhere, perhaps they'd help you track down games with similar gameplay?

I was looking more for biological evolution. I've long thought that a complex and deep evolution themed title could make for a fantastic game, but have never found one.

I remember this game I used to play as a kid. You would start the game with a randomly generated monster and you would use it to progress through the story. You could change the monster any which way you wanted to. It was a blast but I can't recall the name. It was for gamecube and the monsters would battle in minigames. Sorry, can't remember too much. REALLY old game.

EDIT: GOT IT! Amazing Island. That's what it was called.

-this is essentially what spore used as a template for their early game modes... it's just a 2D side-scroller with a pretty cool upgrade system, though.

I feel like this is exactly what OP didn't want. Not that all those games aren't great, of course.

OT: I feel like such a game doesn't exist. But if it is created in the future, I expect it would be amazing. Some sort of pseudo theistic evolution meets the sims, like what Spore was supposed to be.

I did scramble a bit after realizing I'd responded to the wrong thread, but if he doesn't like that Spore is divided into stages perhaps a game that focused on his favorite stage will give him the experience he's looking for. Of course if he's looking for a general evolution game, just one that isn't divided up like that, my suggestion is quite unhelpful. :)

While Spore as it was originally showcased was quite different it was still divided into definite stages. Still it would have been nice if creature appearance was derived from the critters' evolution, and reflected their abilities, as was originally planned. (I'll admit I haven't played Spore, as with Black and White it's a game that sounded awesome when it was unveiled but the final product just didn't seem to approach my initial expectations. Since then I've stopped following most in-development games unless they're quite close to release.)

What, no mention of SimEarth yet? May be too dated and complex for OP's taste though. SimLife may also fit the bill but again, may be too dated and complex.

SimLife's wikipedia page has a See Also section... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SimLife

E.V.O. Search For Eden is a fantastic game. Spore basically used it as a template.

Yeah, that one. Loved it. Still play it sometimes (although these days I have to use a SNES Emulator and play it on the computer). Brilliant game. It's got Martians and evil bees and a toad that spawns mini-toads with the intention to take over the world. The bosses are universally brilliant in design (the Queen Bee scared the shit out of me the first time I played the game, all those teeth...), although I will state that the combat is no more advanced than you'd expect from a 2d side scroller. You can bite, jump on people, and run around the place, and that's about it (well, four-legged mammals can also kick, and if you have a horn you can run into people to do damage until the horn breaks). From memory, I attained access to Eden and gained the power of sentient thought with a creature that looked like a sparrow with the head of a Tyrannosaurus. It was awesome.

It's funny, I don't recall hearing anything about Darkspore... but that's probably the single most persuasive line to buy a game I've ever heard.

Seventh Cross Evolution on Dreamcast. It even has a DNA grid dealie. I never played it, but I heard the evolution aspect is pretty heavy compared to the action.

Jade Cocoon PSX Was pretty good, you capture monsters and can merge them together to create new ones, they grow as they level and it's pretty sweet, there's not an evolution per-se though.

Impossible Creatures I think was a game on PC. It wasn't what you're asking for directly, but you could obtain DNA from various creatures and merge them to create new ones with various skills from their derivative creatures. It was an RTS, if anyone played it can confirm the name.

Darkspore again, was pretty good. As mentioned before, it's a PC game, with Diablo style gameplay, and you use the spore creature creator to customise your monster avatars. It's quite fun.

Fuck, I had one more but I forgot it. I'll come back if I remember it.

As for the idea of a deep evolution game, (perhaps similar to the creature stage of spore), that would be fucking Boss.

EDIT: I didn't remember one, but here's a link to a review of a game called Evolution for PC.

Yeah, it was Impossible Creatures on the PC. It was an alright RTS. It had some design flaw. Mostly that a couple of the animals were far too strong and were almost a requirement for any unit in your army. That, and the henchmen (workers) were very annoying to deal with. Shame it didn't do well enough to warrant a sequel.

It is been a long time since In played it, but I think Creatures had some of the elements you're looking for. It was a game that you grew and bread these small, well... creatures. Teaching them, and helping them grow. But, it might be a bit too close to a virtual pet than what you're looking for.

I remember seeing Creatures 3. I'm not sure if they made any more past that.

The original design for Spore was probably closer to SimLife, shame Will Wright changed it because it might be to complex.

Thanks for verifying. I looked up creatures and found these in the "see also" on wikipedia:
Spore
Impossible Creatures
Black & White
L.O.L.: Lack of Love
Seventh Cross: Evolution
Evolution: The Game of Intelligent Life
E.V.O.: Search for Eden
SimLife
SimEarth

Bolded have been mentioned so far. The other's might be worth looking into OP.

Also, that list reminded me of the game I was thinking of Black & White it was an awesome game which had some pretty cool customisation to be had with the creature (which was the game for me).
