In an effort to find more free Fun-O-Tainment--and share it with the literally ones of people who follow my site and YouTube channel--I'm spending the next couple of weeks downloading and playing every FOSS game I can get my grubby little paws on.

So, if you have a favorite FOSS game, please tell me what it is down below. Any help filling my list with games would be most appreciated.

You may have heard of something called Boatmurdered, and Dwarf Fortress. It has ridiculous amount of details, and they lead to some of the funniest stories in both Dwarven sense of "losing is fun" and black comedy. Major hurdle though...

Mostly the interface, but Lazy Newb Pack helps a little.

I'm absolutely obsessed with Dwarf Fortress. Although, unless I'm missing something, I'm pretty sure it's not a FOSS game.

I'll just throw Xonotic in here and leave, I guess.
Also: some weird meta-humor in the capcha: "Enter the following: 'yes, sir'" "yes, sir". I dunno, it's just...

Well...they are free, I guess, but I don't really think they are, you know free as in "free and open source". That'd be "free" as in freedom, not "free" as in beer, there.

OT: Endgame: Singularity is one - you play as the first self-aware AI in the world, trying to reach singularity before the world learns of your existence and snuffs you out.

Battle for Wesnoth is a fun little turn based strategy which I quite like. The mechanics are a bit...rough at times but I like it. Namely, my small issue with them is that every time you attack, you have a chance to miss (20% minimum, but 40% is more normal) and if the RNG doesn't favour you, you can get wiped really easily, thus the strategy part is slightly hampered when you can't, you know, strategise properly.

Marathon Series [http://marathon.sourceforge.net/]
While not as known or well-aged as id's and 3D Realms' classics, it still has fans for its unique feel and personality.

Dark Mod is on Doom 3, and Doom 3 is open under GPL, thus so is Dark Mod.

You probably want to play Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup
http://crawl.develz.org/wordpress/

I like it more than Nethack, which you also might want to play.

I can recommend 0 A.D., which I had a lot of fun with. Here's a nice screenshot of it:

Something like Age of Empires.

OK, to be honest, I wasn't completely sure on that one. I knew Doom was OS, I just forgot it was GPL. I know for a fact Quake 3 is open source, too, but I'm also not sure on how Quake Live is.

Naev, vega strike, Rigs Of Rods, Phun, and Powder toy. Naev and vega strike both rip off elite and naev is an isometric version. Rigs of rods and phun are both physics engines, and powder toy is a different kind of physics engine.

They're all pretty good.

Also battleships forever, a top down space RTS.

Nice. I was only aware of about half of the games mentioned thus far, so thanks for adding to my list!

IVAN. It's an excellent rougelike that I've been playing for years. It has several unique gameplay elements, like it's body parts system, where damage you take is applied to a specific body part, and you only die if certain body parts reach zero health. It's also incredibly difficult, even by rougelike standards. I've never even gotten past the second dungeon (I got close on only two occasions where I was extremely lucky). It's fun, it's crazy, and you should totally try it if you're into rougelikes.

Ur Quan Masters is a free open source remake of an excellent old game called Star Control 2:
http://sc2.sourceforge.net/

Its kind of a space exploration RPG with arcade style combat. It has a wicked sense of humour and is still on of my favourite games ever made.

It's not a remake, it actually is Star Control 2 plus some redone music, the company released the game but not the name to the game.

But its still counts as free and open source so it fits the OP's request, and if it had not been for the work of the people at source forge it wouldn't be working on modern operating systems. Sure they got the original source code from Toys for Bob but it was for the 3DO, that alone wouldn't have worked on modern OS. Some serious work has gone into it to make it work across many platforms, I would consider that a remake. To say it isn't means they just got the code, did nothing, whacked on a new name to avoid copyright and then there you go.

I'm noticing some of these games are available for Linux and Windows, with Mac versions oddly absent. That seems...strange to me.

When Project Spark will come out there'll be tons of free games to play with. I can't wait!

Not open source. Not free, either, as in free and open source.
