My 10 books that I recommend to everyone are

Lord of the Rings- You are not a nerd if you haven't read this

Song of Ice and Fire series- Greatest fantasy since LOTR, may take a while

Dune- Greatest sci-fi novel ever

Band of Brothers- Possibly the best WWII book ever written

Generation: Kill- About the war in Iraq, both Tragic and hilarious at the same time

John Adams- Possibly the most comprehensive biography I have ever written

1776- From the author of John Adams, one of spectacularly well written

Starship Troopers- A masterpiece, massive better than the movie

Fight Club- Excellent, even though the movie was better

The Art of War- still a best seller over 3,00 years later

You should read Enders Game by Orson Scott Card. He may not share some political views but he is a great writer. Or read The Forever War by Joe Haldeman, another great sci-fi book. And if you like history you should get Pride of Carthage by David Anthony Durham, its a historical novel about Hannibal and his campaign in Italy during the second punic war.

I'm surprised by how much the Hunger Games was mentioned. I do recommend it. The problem with that book, though, is that if you read it, you will read the second as well. While Catching Fire had decent action, that was completely swamped by the romantic crap. If you're like my friends, content to sit around moaning about which boy the female protagonist should choose, do read it. (Oh, lord, how I hate them. "Like, I'm so mad! I can't believe she chose him! OMG!")

I enjoyed Lord of the Flies, although it was creepy as fuck.

One of my favorite books is Un Lun Dun, by China Mieville. I thought it was clever, cute, and not too childish, although the environmental messages are less than subtle.

I'm currently reading Watership Down. When my friend told me to read it, she only mentioned the title, and I thought it would be about a sinking ship. It was about bunny rabbits. However, it is an interesting and emotional read. And hey, now I know what the Warriors series was ripped off from.

Yes the show was crappy, but the books are fantastic, and they keep getting better. If you enjoy books about magic, and books with adult themes (violence, death, sex are not uncommon), you'll dig it.

Also, not enough Terry Pratchett recommendations. I'd suggest starting those with Men at Arms, then Feet of Clay then Jingo, great series.

I agree with you on most of those and that band of brothers is a great book, but the author Stephen Ambrose is a literary thief. There is an article about him on cracked.com and about how he kinda built his career on plagiarism.

Some good books that I have read recently are the Night angel trilogy if you like fantasy.

If you can find them the Animorphs book series is also quite good, although I haven't seen any of the books in years.

I could recommend a bunch of books but I will recommend two you might not hear about from anyone else: Kop and Ex-Kop. If you like gritty noir mixed with Science Fiction you could do worse then those two.

Founding Faith is an in-depth analysis of the U.S.'s Founding Fathers and their religious views and ideology, and how that transferred into the fight for religious freedom.

The Gulag Archipelago is a very detailed overview of the gulags in Soviet Russia, very informative and heartfelt in its style.

I'd personally suggest The Birthday of the World by Ursula K. LeGuin for a good few hundred pages of science fiction on the same level as Clarke, Asimov, et al, a collection of the stories of H.P. Lovecraft, though if you have never read his stuff before you absolutely MUST find a collection with "The Call of Cthulhu" in it (his best-known piece), though if you can find one with CoC + The Color out of Space + The Shadow over Innsmouth, you're set. Can't think of a third book right now.

George RR Martins song of ice and fire series is pretty amazing. Its a medieval fantasy setting but its so different from the usual sword and sorcery stuff. Politics, intrigue and brutality are all major elements of the series.

In non-fiction I recommens Faye Shulmans 'A Partisans memoir'. It really gives a different perspective on WWII and the holocaust, not exactly light reading but still pretty damn interesting.

For politics you can't go wrong with Machiavellis 'The Prince'. Depending on your interpretation, he can either be a monster or a realist.

I would recommend the Song of Ice and Fire series (by George R.R. Martin) if you're into fantasy. Dies the Fire and its sequels by S.M. Stirling are all good sci-fi/apocalyptia books. The Drizzt books by R.A. Salvatore are also good, and very easy to read. Also, the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind is decent, but very slow to start and rather long. All of those books combined should get you through the summer.

I would recommend anything by Jim Butcher. He's a Fantasy / Sci-Fi author. His books are well written, interesting and funny all at the same time =)

The halo book series is actually quite good and informative in my opinion. after the first three i kind of got busy with other things in life, like a job. but occassionaly i revisit them.

What? Nobody has mention the Conan-books yet by Robert E. Howard? For shame people.
So yeah, the Conan-books are quite good, and anything by Stephen King.

I'd heavily recommended The Hunger Games if you like something like 1984 or Sci Fi then pick it up.

no seriously, i hate reading books when i'm forced to, and now i'm doing this speed reading class and the book we're using is Lord of the rings. i think the reason i like it is not only is it awesome, but because i have the movie, i know what's going to happen next in a way, so i know the book won't drull on and on without knowing when something good will happen. now all i can think about is LOTR, i've been drawing LOTR fantasy type stuff and listening to Rhaspody of fire nonstop.

just find a really good book that got a really good movie deal, except harry potter and twilight, harry potter is old and twilight is gay as homosexual shit patatoes. try patriot games and the hunt for red october by tom clancy, forrest gump (maybe too slow), blade runner, rambo: first blood (very moving, one of the best in the franchise), Die Hard *****, etc.

this web site agree's with my theory, LOTR: the return of the king is the best god damn movie...EVER. i've watched that movie so many times, i love it. i love it just a little bit more than i love the first two movies.
