Cat's Cradle and Slaughterhouse 5 are amazing. It's hard to go wrong with Kurt Vonnegut but I suggest starting with those two.

Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo is my absolute favorite book. One by Metallica was based off of it.

A Canticle For Leibowitz is a pretty awesome post-apocalyptic sci-fi novel.

Oh, and Franz Kafka is the shit. The Trial and Metamorphosis should definitely be looked into.

Hmm, I'm quite sure nothing I would recommend would be in your local book store, but it can easily be found online. For a book type novel I simply recommend "John Dies At The End" by David Wong. It is not an ordinary book, it's hilarious in my opinion. It was free to read online. I read it, then ordered a copy. Second part is online for free on the website. It's a weird book, but if you want something different it's the right choice.
For a non-novel books, I recommend any of Malcolm Caldwell's books. They are written on interesting matters, that you probably never thought off. Here's a link of his speech on Ted:

Happy reading!

From what I have gathered, the Escapist is a community of avid readers, so I feel this is the best place to ask, any ideas for a good read? A local bookstore is having a buy two get one free sale so I was thinking about getting three good books to read during the summer and maybe during school when it starts again. It can be fiction or nonfiction, novel, philosophical, religious, whatever. I just want something that you think would be a good read. So please just recommend anything that you enjoyed reading or that you have heard very good things about.
I enjoy the Splinter Cell novels. Jarhead By Anthony Swofford is a good read about a true story of Marines during the Persian Gulf war. I was thinking about picking up a copy of Generation Kill Not sure who it's written by, but It'll be easy to find.
Evan Wright. I've got a copy I borrowed off a friend sitting there waiting for me to read when I go away. Loved the series and I can't wait to read the book.

I also wanted to second the guy who said Lovecraft, I'm the kind of wuss who refuses to watch horror movies but I love reading his stuff, he's just fantastic. And also the guy who suggested The Dark Tower - do it! Even if you only read The Gunslinger.

I'll just list them out.

? Temeraire Trilogy (Dragons galore)
? Bartimaeus Trilogy (Even though it's commonly found in the children's section, I find it very enjoyable)
? Eragon/Eldest/Brisinger
? Ender's Game
? The Hunger Games (like Battle Royale)
? Battle Royale
I agree with most of these, though I enjoyed Ender's Shadow more then I did Ender's Game. The Hunger Games is another good one. I'd add A Game Of Thrones by George R.R Martin and The Name Of The Wind by Patrick Rothfuss as well.

Anything by Neil Gaiman or Terry Pratchett. Gaiman for modern fairytale like stories with a dark twist and Pratchett for intelligent, comedic fantasy.

A Song of Ice and Fire series, by George R.R. Martin.

The first book is called "A Game of Thrones". It takes a while to get into, but it's really good.

When I was back in high school, they had us read a book called Hatchet. It's basically a survival story of this little kid who is involved in a plane accident, It's also got a what-if sequel called First Winter, I'd recommend picking that up too.

I have been getting into the P.J. Wodehouse novels of late he can be very wordy but if you can get into the pacing of it he has a wonderful sense of humour. Of course the best in my point of view is any kind of pratchett

I need to get my mind out the gutter. Thought that said something spelled very similar to books.

Um, I particularily enjoy Ayn Rand's books. Google her.

Cryptonomicon, Neuromancer, Hyperion, or Eye of the World. All freakishly long books, and extremely well written.

Well the best book I've ever read is Mortal Engines, it combines steampunk technology, the apocalypse, relatable characters, interesting locales, sinister conspiracies, an engaging plot, a well-realised universe and lots of great action. There was never a boring moment in the whole novel and if you want to pursue it then here's the cover

I've recently been getting into nonfiction and Columbine by Dave Cullen is a great read if you're into that kind of stuff. also, if you want to be completely grossed out, Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk. Seriously, not for those with weak stomachs.
