well I would personally recommend Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six

I second that, one of his best books IMO. Patriot Games and The Sum of All Fears too.

? Bartimaeus Trilogy (Even though it's commonly found in the children's section, I find it very enjoyable)

And this, it's technically a kid's book as mentioned above, but not too childish and actually pretty funny.

Well the best book I've ever read is Mortal Engines

The whole series of those is pretty good really. (The others are Predator's Gold, Infernal Devices, and A Darkling Plain).

Don't let the fact that they're technically children's books fool you, they're some dark ass stuff.


I'd also reccommend Feed by Mira Grant, which is pretty much the solidest and best post zombie apocalypse fiction I've ever read.

From what I have gathered, the Escapist is a community of avid readers, so I feel this is the best place to ask, any ideas for a good read? A local bookstore is having a buy two get one free sale so I was thinking about getting three good books to read during the summer and maybe during school when it starts again. It can be fiction or nonfiction, novel, philosophical, religious, whatever. I just want something that you think would be a good read. So please just recommend anything that you enjoyed reading or that you have heard very good things about.

Alex Garland - The Beach

Ignore that the movie ever existed and read the book with a completely fresh point of view. It's my favourite book ever (it isn't as... shall we say romanticised as the movie, it's totally different). It's batshit bonkers. And awesome. Very, very awesome.

my all time favourite book is called the Painted Man by Peter V Brett. i also like let the right one in and i read ma book called shiver. its good, considering its similar to Twilight.

I'm halfway through Patient Zero by Jonathan Maberry. It's about a guy trying to stop a zombie outbreak by terrorists and it is pretty good. I also recommend getting the Walking Dead series if you're into zombies and graphic novels.

Can also recommend the Shardlake series (Dissolution is the first) by CJ Sansom, murder mystery set in Henry VIII reign, Stieg Larrson's Millenium trilogy (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo being the first) and Audrey Neiffenegger's (?) Time Travellers Wife. Yes, it's a romance but it is so well written and uses time travel so cleverly that it's well worth picking up.

Edit: The Book Thief by Markus Zuzak is great too. Death tells a story of a girl growing up in WW2 Germany.
