Ok, I'm going through an Indie phase (its like my senior year of HS all over again). Anyway, I'm looking for good indie rock bands. Something along the lines of The Strokes, Plumtree, The Futureheads, and Noah and the Whale.

Some of the biggest names in indie (which is an extremely vague term, so I'll specify what kind of music they are) are the first four I'll name:

-Wilco: They are favorite band, and have been for about six years now. They are alternative-folk. Some call them "The American Radiohead". I never cared for that term. At their best - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot - they created folk songs with a chaotic element that threatened to sabotage the songs. Listen to: "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart" [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlxH9-TYseY]

-Spoon: Pretty straight-up rock that's very easy to get into. Dudes can craft a pop song among the best of them. Listen to: "Sister Jack" [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1z0CNm_It_g].

-The National: To quote Jack Black's character from High Fidelity, this is "old sad bastard" music. But it's very good music too. It's mostly piano based, but they also have a sick drummer [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbFWAtFb18k]. They had a song in Portal 2 [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-Vg2YS-sFE] last year that I'd say is among their best.

-LCD Soundsystem: Electronic/Rock. They called it quits last year after a brilliant farewell tour, but damn were they good. Listen to: "Someone Great" [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOHLeXxfNu0]

-The Dead Weather (aka Jack White band #476): The Dead Weather just makes badass music for badass people. They have a badass chick lead vocalist (though Jack pitches in a good bit too) and make me feel like a badass when I'm cruising down the road listening to songs like this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wg8DMqFuip8].

-Surfer Blood: Very melodic and poppy rock music. Listen to: "Floating Vibes" [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_RBxVpM_AI&ob=av2e]

-Laura Marling: British folk artist. She made my favorite album in both 2010 and 2011. Listen to: "I Speak Because I Can" [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnrI5RsZEdc]

-Punch Brothers: Bluegrass. Yes, bluegrass. But it's an evolution of the genre and this band is ridiculously full of talent. Listen to: "Missy" [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3cMd6GsoDjw], "Nothing, Then" [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svHCqcfud_U]

I hate it when these threads become a list of bands too massive for anyone to realistically investigate and with no suggestion of who to prioritisem so I'm just going to say that all these people are a great place to start. Plus a few from the two posts before it.

Not sure if this applies to what you're looking for or not but I recommend Natalie Portman's Shaved Head.

They have some pretty good stuff. Beard Lust, Slow Motion Tag Team, Confections, Bedroom Costume, Sideways Ponytail, etc. etc.

Check 'em out if you're interested.

Radiohead, while they're not that indie and you may already listen to them, but I haven't been able to stop listening to them for over a week now and I don't plan on stopping any time soon.

Also give The Black Keys a listen, The National are fucking awesome, Hey Rosetta!(Exclamation mark is in the name), Karnivool are pretty awesome, Birds of Tokyo are a softer version, Hungry kids from Hungary, Gorillaz aren't indie but are fucking awesome, Cage the Elephant and Bombay Bicycle Club. Enjoy.

Pixies - I'd say they were indie others may disagree. Pretty mental lyrics.
Kasabian - indie but with a bit of techno, my favourite band if anyone cares to know
Feeder - A product of the 90s rock boom, very good
The Wombats - Very indie
Bloc Party - They've got some killer riffs
The Stone Roses - Kind of indie, many a band influenced by them
Mile Kane - not a band but a solo artist
The Enemy - Very good

I recently got Jack Butler's "Fit the Paradigm," in the Indie Gala (which provides both indie games and indie music). I had no idea who they were, but I really like this album. It's from 2009, I think, but it sounds a lot like something from the 80's. Actually quite good. I especially like the track "Surgery 1984."
Worth a look, at least.

You should watch Boku no Pic-

Oh wait, this is a different kind of recommendation thread.

I'm not really a music guy, but I like TV on the Radio. I don't know if they're indie rock or anything, but they have guitars and drums.

Yeah, it's a beautiful song too. Definitely my favorite song from last year.

In addition to a bunch of the bands already mentioned (Especially The Postal Service and Jack's Mannequin), I recommend the hell out of Stars, especially they're 2010 album, The Five Ghosts. I should probably look some of these up myself since I really love indie rock too, but don't know that many bands...

Love the suggestions so far! Out of the ones already mentioned, I'm gonna re-recommend The Postal Service, Stars, Hey Rosetta! The National, and Jack's Mannequin, and add to the list:

Boy and Bear (folk rock, but they do rock hard): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BI5LD8qVXgQ
Broken Bells (a bit weird/alternative but really original): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5tstDvkpDlw
Guillemots (British indie band): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjrOVc8hYqU
Sufjan Stevens (folk again, but amazing): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azGIf74ICmw
Death Cab for Cutie (pretty mainstream, but who cares): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vss_DUeTAd0
