Free to play, or at least non-subscription. I do not give a single shit about PvP.

In order to help describe what I'm looking for, I'll go into the few I've played a bit of and what I liked/didn't like about them.

Neverwinter:

Good gameplay, very well crafted world that feels real. It felt a bit like playing a decent single player Action RPG. Story actually managed to hold my interest for a while and I still remember parts of it quite well. Downside of this was that it was quite a small world and although the classes felt quite different, playing through with a second character felt like you were doing almost exactly the same as before. Endgame was crap, nothing much to do, the expansion helped a little but it still felt like farming shit and grinding to get a few crappy passive bonuses.
Very little variation in gear, your outfit and weapons look pretty much the same throughout, just slightly fancier versions as you level up. Prior to the endgame, no grinding that I noticed.

GW2:

Big expansive and well designed/immersive world, lots of lore, lots of different areas. Skills, levels, gear etc fed to you at a decent rate. Lots of variety in the look of gear. Feels like an eastern take on western fantasy but they've managed to hold down the animu style bullshit, which makes it familiar in ways, but different enough to be interesting. Story is serviceable enough that I generally know what I'm doing and why. Lots of different things to do to keep you occupied while levelling and in the endgame
Despite all that, the gameplay is what lets it down for me. All the above keeps you occupied but after a while I realised that I wasn't really having "fun" playing the game. The actual running around killing monsters was kind of meh, not bad, just meh. I was never really a hardcore player, but I just got to a point where I realised the game was good at keeping me playing something that wasn't as fun as the time I was spending playing it justified. Deleted all characters and left.

SWtOR:

Blech.

TERA:

Gameplay wise I love this. Some classes may not be my thing but overall the combat actually feels engaging, having to aim and dodge means that I've actually had some difficult fights that felt good to beat them because it took a bit of skill and it doesn't feel like you're just pressing a button over and over until the enemy dies.
The world however always felt like it was an artificial arena filled with enemies that had no real reason to be there other than to be killed by players. Which is exactly what it is of course, but GW2 and Neverwinter did a much better job of hiding it IMO and I have precisely zero idea what the story is.
The whole aesthetic felt far too frilly and over designed, from the world itself to the player characters being porcelain animu fuckdolls and the armour and weapons being very ornate and ostentatious as well as thoroughly impractical.

So really I think maybe something that played like TERA or Neverwinter but had a world like GW2 might be good. Any suggestions?

Maybe skyforge would work for you, tried it a bit awhile ago. Combat is more action oriented (maybe similar to Tera, never played it), and character can switch class at will. Has a huge grid for leveling, complicated to explain but it essentially mean there's no max level so you gotta be okay with grindy.

What I like was that there were a good mix of large open area and more instance based group content (that would scale with number of player so you could solo them too). The class were also fairly interesting, but really unbalanced when I played, not sure if they fixed that.

It was a bit on the pay to win side, exp gain got really slow once you got higher level. The game also some mini game where you had to send follower on mission and stuff, was just annoying busywork but you had to do it to get a bunch of in game bonus.

The MMORPG market has been stagnant/calcified for a long time now. You know who all the heavy hitters are. There are no secret gems lying in the weeds. The FTP games you've not heard much about are low-profile because they're turds.

I'd revisit one of your above choices.

I know next to nothing about MMO's. However, lately I've been enjoying Dungeon Fighter Online. At its core, it's not even a standart MMO, but rather class based brawler, akin to Final Fight and/or Streets of Rage.

You pick a class and later branch out. For example, if you pick Fighter class (local martial artist), then you can become either straight up punch-kicker, Dragon Ball Z-like fireball master, dirty fighter or (my favourite) wrestler.

Besides Fighter, there are also her male counterpart, Male/Female Slayers (swordfighters), Male/Female gunners, Male/Female mages, priest, thief, and newly introduced demon lancer. There are differences between male and female versions of a class. For example, based on their characteristics, it is generally considered that Male Fighters make better dirty fighters and fireballers, while Female Fighters make better wrestlers and punch-kickers.

The gameplay is simple: go to dungeon and destroy things. As you level up, you learn new skills (obviously). But here comes an interesting part: all skills can be mapped to a quickslot OR you can perform them as you would perform, for example, specials in fighting games. I bet you can even play it with gamepad and feel comfortable doing so (I never tried it myself).

It is fun, it is not demanding when it comes to resources of your PC and it doesn't really force you to buy anything. For real money you can buy cosmetics, xp boosters (that drop if you do dailies) and revive tokens, that is it, as far as I am aware.

Me and my friend went on a big MMO spree awhile back, trying a bunch of FTP ones to see if any were good. none of them were worth a damn. If it's not one of the big ones, I wouldn't bother. Then again, he and I came to the conclusion that most MMOs blow after that little experiment even after trying the hitters, so bleh.

Then again, I really really enjoyed FF14 A Realm Reborn. The story was ok from what I experienced (I didn't get out of the first region, so it probably picks up later), combat was a bit simple, but the game did 1 thing that I wish MMOs would do more of. The game had a battle theme when fighting normal monsters. It didn't matter if it was a tiny woodland creature. Awesome battle theme kicks in right when you engage. That alone made combat feel really good to me. No more grinding with boring music in the background

Just play World of Warcraft. Especially since if you buy a brand new one now you get a free upgrade to boost a character to level 100 just for you to experiance the latest expansion.

Black Desert Online.

Not going to write you a review, but the PvP might be the best in any game that I've ever seen. And I was gladiator for three seasons in WoW and have played a lot of other MMO's.

Definitely one of the better games.

Gonna' agree with this. Cut out all the bullshit. Every MMORPG is compared to WOW for better or worse, so just play the bar setter. Its also the most stable in that it'll be a loooong time before the WOW servers are shut down completely.

A resurgence of answers, I see...

WoW falls at the first hurdle I'm afraid. I'm a very casual player, no way in hell I'm going to pay a subscription for a game. Also, from what I've heard it plays like GW, and the gameplay was the one thing about that game didn't work for me, otherwise GW looks superior for my tastes in all respects.

Might give Skyforge a go.

BDO looks worryingly Korean Fantasy Waifu simulator...but the world design looks great. Will have to research gameplay. Anyone able to say how it might compare to TERA/Neverwinter in that respect?

Just because its a subscription does not mean you have to pay every month.

I take a long break from WOW aswell and just pay another 15 after say 2-3 months has past if either something interesting happens in WOW, or just felt like playing WOW again.

But I still have to pay when I want to play. Not happening. Thanks for the continued interest, but WoW is not going to be one I ever play, unless it goes FTP or at least non subscription.

At least try the 20 level limited free trial.

The MMO i liked best so far was DDO.

Great character build options, sensible freemium model, lots of stuff to do. Imho looks far better than WoW and quests tend to be more interesting.

Downsides : It has been around for a long time now. Looks a bit dated, don't know how long it will last, player economy is inflated due to the long running time.

It shits all over TERA. Never Played Neverwinter.

It is the best MMO mentioned in this thread, if you want to be good at PvP it's very grindheavy though. If you don't care about being good at pvp though you can do what my wife does and make your focus lifeskills.

The PvP Guild Sieges and the PvP in general is phenomenal though. Outstrips everything else I've played and seen by a considerable margin.
