So yeah, I'm rebuilding AND adding to my iTunes library, and I figured while I was at it, I'd try expanding my musical horizons just a little bit to get some new artists thrown into the mix.

Trouble is, I'm not terribly educated about music, in any way really. So I need a little help in finding artists that I haven't really heard before. Preferably older artists. 70s type bands, if possible cause from what I've heard of stuff from around that time...there's some pretty awesome music coming from there.

OR, as another alternative, recommendations for films (or games, or TV shows) that have awesome soundtracks, since I love film soundtracks too.

ABBA
Alabama 3
Beethoven
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
Bon Jovi
Chronicles of Narnia Soundtracks
Classical Music (just miscellaneous adagios in this atm)
Counting Crows
Disney music
Doctor Who Soundtracks
Dragonforce
Duran Duran
E.S Posthumus
Eagles
Fable Soundtracks
The Fratellis
Globus
Hans Zimmer
The Hoosiers
Immediate Music
Johnny Cash
Keane
Lady GaGa
Michael Jackson
Mika
Muse
Nick Jonas and the Administration (don't judge me for this one)
Nickelback
Queen
Rolling Stones
Snow Patrol
South Park Movie
Spiderbait
Two Steps From Hell
The Who

So with that list in mind...anyone have any possible suggestions for me?

You've got some rock there so here are a few.
Pretty Maids
W.A.S.P.
Savatage (Trans Siberian Orchestra = TSO)
Bonfire
Stratovarius (not really 70s but I'm a Finn so I got to name them)

Also, Savatage and TSO are and are not the same band. The explanation can be found by googling one of them and that will most likely link you to the other. The main thing is that TSO exists today and they have "classical" music while they were Savatage whom played rock/metal...

Look up X-Ray Dog. They do the same sort of thing as Immediate Music, so you'll probably like them.

Chevelle
Tool (not in the iTunes market)
Slipknot (search their stuff before you buy it)
Eric Clapton
Breaking Benjamin
Three Days Grace
For soundtracks, try Halo 2 or Halo 3.

And good sir, why do you not possess any Led Zeppelin? At least Stairway to Heaven!!!

DeVotchKa and Deadmau5? Hooray for not sticking to one genre ;)

I just found this and think it's pretty awesome. If anyone has a clue as to what genre this is, please tell me.

Also, these guys have a 70's vibe, but they're newer.

Not really what you said you prefer, but I recommend two artists to everyone when anybody asks.

Closure in Moscow, an Australian Progressive Rock band.

And Emilie Autumn, who I can never really classify as anything other than awesome and unique. Think of Pop music with an Industrial and Classical twist. She's actually a classically trained Violinist, and has an album that's half covers of classical songs, and half her own instrumental work. The last video is one of her originals.

If you really enjoy any of this, send me a message and I can hook you up with A LOT more.

EDIT: I'm going to throw Beirut into this post.

They're an indie/Balkan folk band, that will randomly walk down streets and bust out into song. Its lovely.

Aphex Twin - Brilliant Electronica artist.

Radiohead - I didn't understand why people compared them to Muse before I heard them, with people saying Muse were the crap version of them. Until I listened to them. Seriously, if you haven't listened to Radiohead then you haven't lived. :) They're my favourite band.

30 Seconds To Mars.

Them Crooked Vultures - Only one album so far, but a great one. Their second album should be out late this year or early next year.

Go find the Super Street Fighter IV soundtrack, or at least look into the character themes. Do it.
They're not all golden, but it's music I'd recommend fo'sho'.

I don't know that much from the 70's. And considering that I probably can't recommend anything you're looking for.

But you did mention liking soundtracks too and I really cant resist. Amon Tobin's soundtrack for Splinter Cell - Chaos Theory is one of my favourite albums/EP's, and definitely my favourite soundtrack from anything.

<spoiler=Some examples>
<spoiler=Amon Tobin - Hokkaido><spoiler=Amon Tobin - Theme From Battery><spoiler=Amon Tobin - El Cargo>

It's probably not quite what you're looking for but hey, you want to expand your musical horizons. Although I guess this would be a little bit more than "a little bit".

Anyway, I know that that's not what you meant by "70's type bands", searching by year/decade is a great way to narrow things down to genres you'd like, but I just feel like adding this in: How good music is isn't defined by what decade it happened to come out on, at least in my opinion. If you like a song, awesome. Don't let stupid things like the "music was so much better in the [decade here]'s, everything now is crap" crowd limit your options.
