I realise that there'd be some people that would argue that I haven't picked a group's "best" song, but that's the magic of opinion. These are just my personal favourites from each group. If you like the sound of any of these, I thoroughly recommend looking at some of their others, just to make sure.

Some older good bands would be Cream, Bob Dylan, Motorhead, Ozzie Osbourne, The Doors, Pink Floyd (not so much my thing but I still listen to best ofs occasionally), Hoodoo Gurus, Billy Thorpe, Cold Chisel, Van Halen, Rolling Stones, The Kinks.

Newer bands I would say is Clutch (really great band).

If you want something a little more electric go for 1200 Micrograms, Shpongle, Infernal Droid and a bunch like that.

If you wanted to get into Metal I could probably throw a lot more out.

Edit: Forgot Neil Young and Fleetwood Mac. Bloodhound Gang is a bit PG but if you look past that their music is still pretty good.

Trouble is, I'm not terribly educated about music, in any way really. So I need a little help in finding artists that I haven't really heard before. Preferably older artists. 70s type bands, if possible cause from what I've heard of stuff from around that time...there's some pretty awesome music coming from there.

Are you familiar with 70's punk/classic punk (Ramones, Sex Pistols etc.), proto-punk (Stooges, MC5 etc), post-punk (Joy Division, Public Image Limited), or 80's punk?

Here, give this a spin - Dinosaur Jr. cooking up a slice of fried gold with a song by The Cure.

This makes me happy. Beautiful song, I've liked all the covers I've heard of it so far. Favourite-ed on youtube.

Try this on for size... not great quality though. Don't let their appearance fool you, they do actually have some balls, contrary to almost every band that went on to have a similar image and was hugely SHIT and ruined music for everyone, a la Guns 'N' Roses etc.

New York Dolls FTW.

Also, here's a little personal favourite of mine while we're all on the subject of older music:
Christ, I fucking love Ian Dury so much.

Why haven't I heard of him before? I can't say the music grabbed me, but I find him intriguing.
