This might be slightly off-topic, but have you checked out GrooveShark? I go there and just listen to random things until I find something I like, then find more by the same artist.
I don't think I have any music saved to my pc anymore thanks to them :p

Ok, let's see what I can throw at you...
The Amboy Dukes - Journey To The Center Of The Mind
Oingo Boingo - Dead Man's Party
Def Leppard - Rocket
Social Distortion - Bad Luck
E.L.O - Mr. Blue Sky
The Surfaris - Wipeout
INXS - Just Keep Walking
Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love
Cold Chisel - Khe Sanh
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Where The Wild Roses Grow (With Kylie Minogue)
Pink Floyd - Another Brick In The Wall (Part 2)
The Rolling Stones - Sympathy For The Devil
Tool - Vicarious
I realise that there'd be some people that would argue that I haven't picked a group's "best" song, but that's the magic of opinion. These are just my personal favourites from each group. If you like the sound of any of these, I thoroughly recommend looking at some of their others, just to make sure.

Some older good bands would be Cream, Bob Dylan, Motorhead, Ozzie Osbourne, The Doors, Pink Floyd (not so much my thing but I still listen to best ofs occasionally), Hoodoo Gurus, Billy Thorpe, Cold Chisel, Van Halen, Rolling Stones, The Kinks.

Newer bands I would say is Clutch (really great band).

If you want something a little more electric go for 1200 Micrograms, Shpongle, Infernal Droid and a bunch like that.

If you wanted to get into Metal I could probably throw a lot more out.

Edit: Forgot Neil Young and Fleetwood Mac. Bloodhound Gang is a bit PG but if you look past that their music is still pretty good.

I wont bother linking Youtube vids, just trust a total stranger and check out:

Morley Grey-The Only Truth

Thunder and Roses-Dear Dream Maker

The Power of Zeus-It Couldn't be me

This is assuming your interested in old 70's stuff you've probably never heard.

Also try Link Wray, the father of the Distorted Guitar and The Sonics mid to late sixties Garage rock.

Trouble is, I'm not terribly educated about music, in any way really. So I need a little help in finding artists that I haven't really heard before. Preferably older artists. 70s type bands, if possible cause from what I've heard of stuff from around that time...there's some pretty awesome music coming from there.
Are you familiar with 70's punk/classic punk (Ramones, Sex Pistols etc.), proto-punk (Stooges, MC5 etc), post-punk (Joy Division, Public Image Limited), or 80's punk?

I'll just list some bands randomly.

I just found this and think it's pretty awesome. If anyone has a clue as to what genre this is, please tell me.

I was going to say Nintendocore but it lacks the core element. It reminds me of some Crystal Castles songs, whatever subgenre of electronica they are... gah, it's one of those things where you feel like you've ehard the answer before but it's just out of reach, haha. Sorry.

My friend, you need some horrorpunk and psychobilly in your life
Just adding to the list. Morbid yet happy or endearing.

Oh Ambi, you fucking Gem. I got curious as to what my friends-list people had posted recently and stumbled across this post of yours. It wins.

Here, give this a spin - Dinosaur Jr. cooking up a slice of fried gold with a song by The Cure.
This makes me happy. Beautiful song, I've liked all the covers I've heard of it so far. Favourite-ed on youtube.

Try this on for size... not great quality though. Don't let their appearance fool you, they do actually have some balls, contrary to almost every band that went on to have a similar image and was hugely SHIT and ruined music for everyone, a la Guns 'N' Roses etc.

New York Dolls FTW.

Also, here's a little personal favourite of mine while we're all on the subject of older music:
Christ, I fucking love Ian Dury so much.
Why haven't I heard of him before? I can't say the music grabbed me, but I find him intriguing.
