"Should he watch Chariots of Fire?"

Yup. I'm currently [sub]very[/sub] depressed, and I am looking for sad movies.
Why I am asking for this? Well I find myself more interested on sad movies, even when I am not depressed, and I find that they show more emotion than the ones that don't.

Case in point, All About Lily Chou-Chou [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_About_Lily_Chou-Chou]. Just check the link, I won't elaborate much of the movie, however I feel like writing a review for the movie since no one has done one before in The Escapist.

Anyways, what are your suggestions?

Here are mine:
The aforementioned All About Lily Chou Chou, Vendetta [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vendetta_%281999_film%29], Green Dragon [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Dragon_%28film%29] and K-Pax [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K-PAX_%28film%29].

Note: You can say any movie, be it happy or sad, but if it goes on similar themes or does a good job on, well, everything. Also preferably mention somewhat nor widely known movies. I can guess already that at least 5 people are going to mention Pan's Labyrinth.
I have anime that will make you cry your balls off, but not movies... sorry
List them, I'm always open into everything.

Hmmm, I always watch "Castaway", "Hero" or "The Road" when I'm feeling like that.

It is anime but Grave of the Fireflies is a depressing and good film. Basically about a couple of Japanese children trying to survive during WWII while Japan is being bombed.

Yi Yi by the late and much lamented Edward Yang, a three-hour epic about the common man, our remembrances, the choices we do and do not take, the ties that bind (and destroy) us to our families, our environment and how wonderful it is to just be alive and breathing, simply put, a masterpiece of world cinema, that (stealing Mr. Yahtzee's analogy) reminds me that, regardless of the CGI abusing robot slug fest, refference-per-second, commitee designed garbage that plagues movie theatres, cinema is still worth defending.

Try Pan's Labyrinth. It's a very dark, depressing, mature fantasy film. As long as you can handle a few bloody scenes, it's an absolutely beautiful film, and despite its dark nature, actually is rather hopeful in the end (which is still something you want right now).

Watch "One Week" released in 2008. It is a great movie, especially if you like Canada.

Schindler's List? The Pianist? Nothing like the holocaust for some good ol' depression. Requiem for a Dream is perhaps the most depressing film i've ever seen.

That said though, over all of these i recommend you stop being so depressed.

If there's one thing depressed people like to do, it's tell everyone how depressed they are all the time.

Most war movies (especially the graphic ones) evoke a lot of emotion. The serious ones do, anyway. Saving Private Ryan, Passchendaele, and Yamato to name a few good ones (in my opinion).

There's a Cold War movie called The Lives of Others. It's a German film about life in the GDR, and it's a work of art. There are so many layers of detail and the actors are mostly from theatre, so they can act in a most superbly emotive manner. I would call it a moving film, rather than a depressing one, deeply emotional, and wonderfully executed.

I Not Stupid Too

Its a Singapore produced film, so you're stuck to reading subtitles.

A bit is chopped off here and there, but you won't miss too much I think.

Someone already said it, but Grave of the Fireflies is the ultimate depressing movie movie.

Of course The Fountain and Pan's Labyrinth are always good, too.

If you can follow the sometimes confusing plots, alot of wuxia films (House of Flaying Daggers, Hero, etc.) can be fairly sad.

It's obvious, isn't it? If you're feeling tired, don't go run a marathon. If you're feeling hungry, don't throw out all your food.

And if you're feeling 'depressed', for the love of fuck don't watch depressing bloody movies. Put something fun on and have a laugh.
Honestly, some people mumble mumble...

You're thinking of 7 Pounds, which manages to pull off that odd combination of being tremendously sad but tremendously uplifting.
While having plotholes the size of The Grand Canyon.

OT: The Pianist. Oh, and Chinatown!
