I've recently been reading a manga called 'The gamer' and I have been missing some old skill based games where you had almost unlimited skills and could level each skill up just by using them over and over. I prefer fantasy type games, however I have played the elder scroll games to death and wish to try something new any ideas?

I never played the video game, but if it's anything like the pen & paper game it's modelled after.
Shadowrun might be something to look into.

You could always try the Disgaea series. They're tactical turn based RPGs where the whole point of the game (or at least a large chunk of it) is grinding to infinity. Pretty fun too.

Ya Disgaea comes to mind. If I remember correctly in Resonance of Fate you constantly leveled the skills you used. Not super deep but it gets interesting in the combinations across your team members.

Path of Exile has something similar to that (you get Skills from quests or as drops, but you level them up by using them/boosting them with other gems/both.) so you may want to give it a try (it's F2P and not that big memory-wise)

How about the Fallout series? All of them include skill and concentration. Buy the DLC's and skills will be tested. The game has 50 levels for you to get to and everytime you level up, the more fun it gets.

Resonance of Fate also has gun modifications, enemy weaknesses/resistances, and team positioning mechanics. The game is orientated around tactics and rules, not so much grinding skills.

Anyway, my recommendation would be something like Dragon Quest VIII. It's very old school, but gives you a little more freedom for skill-point based gameplay.

I'm not sure that's what he's looking for. While you do get experience for just about everything you do, you don't get better at lock picking by picking locks over and over. Rather, you spend a set amount of skill points on leveling up.

@OP: The only ones I can think of are Rune Factory series, Final Fantasy II, and LotR: The Third Age.

"Skill based" is quite vague IMO, Dark Souls [http://store.steampowered.com/app/211420/] might be skill based due to timing (when to strike/evade) and Path of Exile [http://store.steampowered.com/app/238960/] might be skill based too, but it's more dependant on stats.

I'm basing "skill based" to something more "action oriented", because you mentioned having played The Elder Scrolls a lot.

Kingdoms of Amalur. [http://store.steampowered.com/app/102500/]

A semi-open world, third person Action RPG, it's pretty huge.

Divinity 2. [http://store.steampowered.com/app/219780/]

Pretty similar to Amalur, very action-y RPG and it has a great sense of humor.

Sacred 2. [http://store.steampowered.com/app/225640/]

It's pretty close to being a Diablo clone, BUT it feels more like an Elder Scrolls game that happens to play like a Diablo clone. The world is huge, the game is huge and it doesn't take itself seriously.

Not to mention Blind Guardian cameo in the game, and yes it is a pretty awesome game. Now i need to crank some BG this morning... goodness i love that band.

Are there still servers running for Sacred 2 though? Or are there any community based ones? i haven't had it installed for some time, and i vaguely remember someone saying the MP servers were all gone.

You could play Secret of Evermore on an emulator. I always liked it when my SNES was still working. It has a lot diversity and the skill system you mentioned fits with the game's levelling system. You play a buy and his dog who end up in a jungle/stone age time and you slowly progress through different continents (each in a different region, e.g. stone age -> ancient civilizations -> fantasy medieval -> space age) and your arsenal constantly changes. The story/setting is pretty wacky at times but still quite enjoyable.
You find different weapons (sword, axe, spear) and as you travel through different ages you find better versions of them. Each of them needs to be levelled up separately so you need to kill some enemies with your spear in melee before you can throw it, for example.
In addition it has a very extensive alchemy (spell) system. Most spells need to be levelled up as well if you want to use them at later levels. However, each time you use one of them you use ingredients that you need to farm/buy. This results in a mix of melee, spells and switching between the boy and his dog so it doesn't get stale (except for some farming, of course but you seem to want some of that).

The only game I know that plays like you describe is Ultima Online. Besides Bethesda RPGS of course.

I got it last week thanks to the HIB, a friend of mine got it before and has been telling me how awesome it is. I'd like to know as well, I've been curious to see how well it plays on MP, my friend told me he heard something similar, that the server shut down and all that, I guess I'll investigate a bit on that.
