The escapist helped me last time i had this issue so here's hoping you guys can pull it off again, although my memory is more hazy on this one.

I will do my best to remember but its been around 2 decades since i read it.

I remember that there where multiple main heroes but i believe the first guy had to find/recruit the others and there where about 5-7 of them in total and that he was given the task by some deity or higher being, that each of these people had a counterpart on the evil side who was sort of their opposite and was lead by a main villian who was also representing some deity/ higher being and that a massive war is started lead by each side.

about the only other clear thing i can remember is they can use rifts/portals in the world to travel around faster through corridors and that they hire a bunch of barbarian mercenaries to help them fight the war and they use the corridors and some deception possibly magic to transfer the army around where they need them without the barbarians realizing how they are traveling.

I know that's not a lot to go on and if i recall anything else I will update, any help would be appreciated

This REALLY sounds like The Redemption of Althalus by David and Leigh Eddings. [footnote] Published 2001, ISBN 0-345-44077-3, and yes it was on my bookshelf just 3 steps from my computer [/footnote]

It is a book I really enjoyed, not because of a deep philosophical meaning to it, but because I just love the humor. The lead, Althalus, and the goddess that is using him, Dweia also known as "Emmy", have a long running argument over whether it would be better to just assassinate the bad guy or do things the goddess' way. Althalus keeps pointing out that his way would be quicker and cleaner, after all.

EDIT: Singular book. Unlike the other Eddings works, this one is not part of a series.

Listen mate!
It's not okey to kill of a thread like this with the first post. You got to keep the topic creator in a bit of a suspense and give a few foul leads first until revealing you know :p

On Topic:
Well maybe this is something I should look up, seems interesting enough.

Absolutely love this book, its one of my favourites. The interaction between Althalus and Emmy was perfect.

Alright, dammit! I confess! I confess! I AM the thread serial killer. You caught me. I just can't help it. I see a thread just sitting there, looking all smug and superior and I just need to . . . .to . . . .

*puts head on desk and sobs*

But you'll never take me alive, copper! *runs into the depths of reddit, disappearing from sight*

This book sounds interesting. I may need to give it a go at some stage :D
What I really liked about it was that its less "get strong and fight villain" and more tactical, positioning people and getting nations on side.

If it's anything like David Eddings' other books then it's likely to be complete bilge. Sorry to be "that guy".
