And to answer your question, it's being directed by Rupert Sanders, who directed Snow White and the Huntsman.

I'm not really a big GitS fan. I've only seen the movie and didn't much care for it. I do hope this is good, though, as i don't want more anime-to-live action adaptations to be bad. I don't have that bitter hatred towards American remakes that most everyone else has.

Be fair? Wow dude take a step back for a moment and remember what you are talking about. How fair is it to judge their media by our narrow standards?

The characters all have Japanese names and the show is set in Japan(the show also tackles cultural issues specific to Japan). They don't really look like any particular ethnicity because they don't need to. The primary audience of the show lives in Japan. Which is a country with a fairly homogenous population. They don't need explicit racial markers for the characters like we would in the west. The characters are Japanese by default, and when they aren't they are either drawn differently, or named accordingly.

In order for this to work the writers are gonna have to both change the setting and the character names. Having a White woman named Mokoto Kusanagi is gonna be weird. Same with the other characters because its gonna ring false to have White guys running around named Batou, Togusa, and Ishikawa.

That's Saito, he's their sniper. Truthfully when I compare them to work done by major western animators, most of the cast of GitS I would peg as Asian. Don't know if I'd drill them down totally as Japanese, but defiantly East Asian.
