I am seriously impressed that you had any faith in you tube atall. If anyone can find a video with over 100 comments where none of them are spam or some sort of hate then i will give you a thumbs up in your direction.

YouTube is 90% scum, 10% people who are just looking at videos and bother to make a comment about something or upload a funny video or two.
That's a bit harsh I'd say it's the other way round, most people on the tube are just there watch a good video or upload their own it's the minority that trolls, or atleast through my experience.

I find youtube to be a hilarious phenomenon.
no matter what video you are watching (it can be on pretty much any subject), the comments are full of people bitching, calling each other gay or taking the serious piss out of someone for making a simple mistake or spelling error.
eg. "you fucking dumbass moron idiot, you missed out the 3rd i in Antidisestablishmentarianism, learn to spell you *insert racist/homosexual term here*"
or someone asking a question about something that its quite easy not to know and getting a response like:
"you fucking retard dumbass fag how can you not know *insert knowledge here*, how stupid are you? you retard, I hope you die"

Its amazing how usually the comments have nothing at all to do with the subject of the video.
It also shows just how hating and offensive people become when they are practically anonymous

Because real men listen to modern songs that have the lyrics wrote/written (I failed English) on the back of a postage stamp. The music is so poorly done you can't tell what instrument is currently playing, it's just a constant thumping noise that repeats every five seconds. Plus the lead singer (and I use the word 'singer' in the loosest sense possible) sounds like he is shouting through his nose.

I love modern music. Especially songs about someone being on a fucking boat or wearing a t-shirt or kissing a girl for publicity.

If they ever create the technology to clone people for the love of GOD PLEASE bring back Freddie Mercury so we can get back to good music.

if you're going to quote me at least quote the whole thing so as not to give a false impression as to what i meant. i love old music and was commenting on the irritating habit some people have of berating people for listening to it above mdern songs. what makes it all the more grating is that the guy who sent me the message had nothing but jonas brothers vids on his favourites.
i also take exception to people who berate me for also liking new music, if its good its good and some modern music is very good
I wasn't berating you for liking older music, I was berating the person that sent you the '80'z muzic iz 4 fagz git a lyfe u fag' message. I actually prefer older songs to the 'songs' that are currently considered popular music. How can anyone hate a period that gave us songs like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MP0APvTSMMw Most new bands sound the same to me and the only 'modern' music I listen to comes from bands that have been around for a bit, for example Snow Patrol, Foo Fighters....in fact just go here if you want to see what music I like: http://www.jango.com/profiles/2546697?l=0 Save me typing out a whole list.

(Sorry if you mis-understood me or I mis-understood you but at least this thread hasn't descended into a 'your mom's gay' fight the way youtube usually does.)

Okay, I registered here maybe over a year ago, can't quite remember now. I haven't posted much at all but I've really enjoyed reading the various topics that come up. On this topic however, I feel I can comment from experience.

So I've been making videos on YouTube for over three years now (I'm on my fourth account due to me getting bored very quickly with what I'm doing and wanting a fresh start). I went there to make video game reviews and yes, I can confirm several sad things that have been stated previously in this topic.

First of all, there are a lot of good people on YouTube both who make videos and who just watch them. You come to know your subscribers and I've always been very lucky in that I don't seem to attract asshats with my videos although occasionally one will stumble upon them and tell me to kill myself or something. That's the internet.

But the sad truth is that if you want any degree of popularity then often you'll have to "sellout" and appeal to the lowest common denominator. Take the game scene for example. You have the likes of Yahtzee who in my opinion is the best there is and he does it the way he wants to do it and people love it. Then you have the Angry Video Game Nerd. Now, I love him, but it's pretty evident that he knows exactly what his audience want (lots of swearing and crude distasteful jokes) and he gives it to them. If you watch his other videos it's clear that he's actually a really intelligent well spoken individual and it kind of makes me sad to see that for the most part the kind of people he attracts are, for lack of a better word, morons. The typical comment on one of his videos goes something like "lulz fuck u".

The point I'm trying to get to is that YouTube itself discourages intelligent discussion or even well made content. I myself spend hours painstakingly making my gaming videos even though I know I don't have to. I could get a hundred people telling me my videos are brilliant even if they were just a single piece of footage with sweary commentary on top. The reason I put so much work into my videos is that I'm doing them for me as much as anyone else. But don't kid yourself into thinking that being successful on YouTube requires talent. I don't think I need offer any examples.

So in conclusion, there is great content on YouTube and proper communities of really nice and intelligent people. However they tend to be restricted to the more obscure channels simply because stupidity sells. There are of course exceptions where a genuinely clever video maker becomes extremely popular but these are exceptions.

Anyway while I'm here and posting I think I will take the opportunity to shamelessly promote my own channel of gaming reviews (both retro and new). If you take a look at the comments I receive, you'll see that aside from a few spelling errors, they're a world away from what has been discussed previously in this topic.

Thanks.

The fact that you had faith in Youtube's so-called 'community' to begin with is even more surprising than the incident you described. Aside from 4chan, you'll never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy than the Youtube community.

ok I know of /b/, but what exactly is LUE?
It stands for Life, the Universe and Everything. Despite the awesomeness that is Hitchhiker's Guide, it's still a horrible place. It's the off-topic board on GameFAQs.
