Seriously, what the hell.

I enjoy having a nice peaceful night to myself, lying on the couch watching a documentary in a very informative manner with a very acceptable decibel level. ^_^

.. but then... a commercial enters the mix

DO YOU HAVE DIABETES YOU SON OF A ***** BECAUSE IF YOU DO CALL LIBERTY MEDICAL OR I'LL BLOW YOUR FUCKING EAR DRUMS OUT
o_O

I don't know.. I just felt I had to comment on this unsatisfactory event.

Heh, this shit happens to me all the time, too.
I just immediately turn off sound altogether.
Commercials are so freaking stupid, I can't take them.

Yeah, I think the Cash for Gold commercials do that too. Although since I got DVR... well a lot of things have happened since I got DVR.

Bizarrely, it's not louder, there's just 'more' sound. Video producers use a technique called 'peak limiting' to bring the quieter elements of a waveform up to the same level as the loudest. This means that your annoying advert is essentially no louder (at its loudest point) than the preceding TV programme, but it sounds like it is (and there's not much broadcast networks can do about it).

I saw a local ad here in Australia that didn't use this technique. It was for free hearing tests - genius.

I've also noticed that the volume increases during the ad breaks, or rather the adverts are broadcast at a louder volume.

I think the do it because they know that people usually go into the kitchen during the adverts to make a drink, so they still want to be able to reach them.

I've always hated how they do that with the volume. I usually mute commercials every chance I get, just on principal. Some of them seem designed just to torment people.

For example:

And then there's:

Actually, I just really, really hate Billy Mays.
