OT: Love is odd. I think I may be experiencing it now. I've been unusually happy for a long time, and only 2 things have changed in my life. 1) The presence of a lady friend, and 2) I have a beard.
So unless the beard is happiness growing from my face, love seems like the answer. So, a profound feeling of happiness and rightness in your day to day life, and an urge to share this happiness with a particular person. And a lot more stuff that words can't really help with.

I'm only going to say this, if I had a nickel for every time someone wrote me off for being an average 18 year old, I'd be hella rich. There are reasons why I don't let people in.

And SimuLord, I have seen things, things that in the 5 years that I've known most of my friends, they still can't understand how I keep trucking through life the way I do.

And I was raised by a Vietnam War Vet...I do have a degree of understanding of what you guys go through. But let's just say that our life experiences are different and leave it at that.
"you guys"? How old do you think I am? :p

But seriously, I'll say it again: You ain't seen nothin' yet. Trust me on this one. And I say that not to scare you but to remind you that you may think you've seen the worst of what the world has to offer but it gets worse before it gets better. And the moment you let yourself get "jaded" or "broken", you're pretty much fucked.

I went through more in the first 19 years of my life than most people go through in a lifetime. And I was just getting started. I was 32 before I finally came out the other side of it. Look at my birthday in my profile and do the math. And yet I'm still, as someone so kindly put it, "the nicest guy on the Internet". I just have no tolerance for adolescent whining.

There are several metaphysical resarches on love, I'd recommend Søren Kirkegaards works if you want a rational answer.

Okay, I'm a 16 year old. Among my age group there seems to be this massive belief among the couples that they are in love, and a belief among the singles that at 16 you are probably too hormonal to know what love is. And, for the most part, I agree, we/I are far too young and inexperienced to know what love is without having experienced it. So what I want to know, from those escapists (escapians?) who have found love is this; what is love? Is it a sexualised friendship; a deep emotional dependence on another person to the point where it aches to think of them leaving for any period of time; a mutual respect that exists independent of lust, but normally accompanies it?
Love is just another 4 letter word used to describe how you feel about someone. That is pretty much it there is no deeper meaning to Love there is no HOLY SHIT moment. Well there is a HOLY SHIT moment but that is when you discover how meaningless the word really is. The only reason that Love has such meaning is because of the thought that goes into showing how much you care about the person. There is a word that ALWAYS comes up in relationships when they deal with the word LOVE and that is another 4 letter word spelled C-A-R-E. Pretty much Love is caring so much about a person that you want them to be happy no matter what that you want to spend as much time with them as you can and that you don't want anything bad to ever happen to them.

I consider love a dellusion, that's not to draw away from its effects, its certainly a wonderful (yet horrible, horrible thing unless satisfied) situation to be in. So when 16 year olds say they're in love, those who mean it aren't wrong because of their inexperience, truth be told I miss how 'in love' I was when I was 16, even though it was primarily just hormones and didn't even ammount to anything.

In my experience it's a shortcut to depression by broken heart and is to reason and common sense what Anti-matter is to regular matter.

Yes my relationships have so far all ended badly, how could you guess?

Ive been in love once. It didnt go well. But that time I was sure I was in love. Because it ached my entire body and mind whenever I was seperated from that person for any long period of time. And the thought of her being with someone else was a nightmare. There was no sexual lust for her. Just an emotional dependence. Sure I was physically attracted to her but it was more then that to it.

It ofcourse didnt go the way I wanted to and she just wanted to be "friends". Dont think ive ever felt emtional pain of that magnitute before.

True Love is needing and wanting another for more than sex.

Obviously this mystical creature is very rare and elusive.

First of all, fuck off with the relationship threads.

Secondly, love is a cankersore; a disgusting, despicable, offensive, sickening emotion which rots the brain, which destroys the body.
I'm detecting that a certain someone has had a slightly bad experience with the warm and fuzzy side of life?
RAK

I have a feeling you don't like life.
1. Fuck off. No one asked you. You could've simply avoided clicking tthat little button and saved everyone including you a major headache.
2. Either get therapy or become a hermit. Meaning: fix what's wrong with you or leave society. Hating the only thing that keeps society sane is PROBABLY a sign that there's something wrong with you.

What your statement says about you:
1. You got spurned once, and you're a crybaby.
2. You think it's cool to act like a surly bastard. Take my word for it, it's not.
3. You're emo/misanthropic. See above.
Alright.

Obviously this guy was bit...rash, but wouldnt it be better to just ignore him or something if you dont like what he has to say?
Yeah, I know 'fuck off with the relationship threads' was pretty messed but your blind retalitory comments are just as bad.

Noone asked you? This is a forum, everyone is asked a question and may provide an answer.

Love keeping society sane? It keeps it going, by that I mean reproduction but it definately doesnt keep people sane, at least not as a whole.

Yeah, this guy was being a dick, but retaliating on the net like that just looks...dumb.

"Everything ends badly, or else it wouldn't end." - Coughlin the Bartender, "Cocktail".

I'll tell you when I stopped getting depressed over relationship failures. It was the same moment I realized that when I go looking for a date, it never takes me long to find one.

Love is respecting everything about your partner, their looks, intellect, style. It's an amazing connection between two people.

its more than lust. without love we are nothing.
Wow. Just wow. I'm sorry but that just seems a bit short-sighted is all. What of enjoying, say, a cookie? Do you love the cookie? Probably not. Yet it gives a nice and tingly feeling as it tastes great. Makes me like the day a bit more. Enough, in fact, that I would be tempted to say: "hey, I want to be alive just a bit longer to be able to enjoy another one!"

The point I want to make is that love may be nice, or great or the point of bloody life for some people but that certainly does not make it the exclusive meaning to life. That would just be silly.

I think that was a bit of an over reaction.
1. this is a forum open to almost anyone. therefore if he wants to share his opinions he's free to do so. (as long as it's within the forum rules and i think that particular post was.)
2. While i have no hatred for love i have no interest in it and I'm a contributing member to society. I don't think he should be forced to get help or leave society just because he thinks differently than most people.

Love is your body nodding in approval of someone else's genes for the sake of mating and potentially spawning offspring. *shrug*

Love is also probably the most awesome way to get your head screwed up! Except for when it goes wrong and the love goes away... then you're just left with a screwed-up head =/

You know you love someone when you value thier happiness much more then you value your own. It doesn't really have a hole lot to do with sex.

Since I am the most qualified to answer this;

Love is what you feel.
If you feel love when you are 16, it is love.
If you are 70, it is love.

It's only a bunch of fools who want to point at younglings and say "Ho ho ho, that's not love. What we have is love! What you have is hormones."
They fail to take into consideration that people are different. Just because you're 16 doesn't mean you have to be immature or only think about sex.
You are my personal hero forever. You are so right. Mind if I copy/paste your answer once in a while?
