Look at Total Biscuit's WTF is... series on youtube, there's all kinds of good low spec indie games he's looked at that you can get on steam.

My advice: finish Darksiders. Its a slow start but so worth it with some of the killing blows and an awesome twist. Also the VERY end is amazing.

Try King Arthur: The Role-Playing Wargame.

It's a little like a Total War game, but with fantasy elements (magic and mythical creatures) and character building, you have hero units who will upgrade as you use them.

Mount and Blade will devour your life if you let it, and the graphics are pretty low by modern standards. Can't go wrong there if you like sandbox strategy RPG's.

You should try the demo of Mount and Blade: Warband before buying it, because although the graphics may not be as shiny as modern games, that doesn't mean it's suitable for low spec gaming.

It can be quite processor and memory intensive, especially if you get into a battle with 100+ individual units on each side, each with their own horse and various projectile weapons each with it's own flight path.

Your laptop may be able to run it, if you turn all the settings down to their minimum and disable all of the physics and reduce the battle size, but it may not be as much fun when it's hobbled like that... for instance you'll still get into battles with 500-1000 troops on each side, but due to your restrictions you may only be able to have 50 on the field at one, so an epic battle will turn into a repetitive skirmish on an empty battlefield with waves and waves of reinforcements (and bodies that have to disappear as soon as you kill them).

I know you didn't want a point and click game ... but you'd be suprised how good Osmos is on a laptop. Great little game to jump in and out of quickly as time presents itself.

KOTOR!!!! Definitely gonna keep you busy, that game is. If that's not your cup of tea, than you could do any of the Mount and Blade games, I would recommend both Warlord and Fire and Sword.

tf2 is hugely scalable
and to my knowledge both magicka and bastion aren't very demanding despite being a ton of fun.
Magicka? Not demanding? BA HA HA HA!

Unless the laptop is gaming one, which it appears not to be, i'd steer clear of magicka. From personal experience you want a decent system to run it.
