Lucas Re-Releasing Star Wars Movies in 3D

The Star Wars movies are heading back to theaters, this time with a whole extra dimension.

George Lucas plans to re-release all six of the Star Wars [http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Trilogy-Harrison-Ford/dp/B001EN71DG/ref=sr_1_3?s=gateway&ie=UTF8&qid=1285766652&sr=8-3] movies in 3D. The movies will be tackled in episode order, with The Phantom Menace [http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Episode-Phantom-Widescreen/dp/B00003CX5P/ref=pd_sxp_grid_pt_1_1] expected to hit screens sometime in 2012.

A message on the official Star Wars website [http://www.starwars.com/movies/saga/announce3d/index.html] said that there were few movies better suited to 3D than the Star Wars saga, and that the addition of the extra dimension would take the immersion to "the next thrilling level." Lucasfilm's visual effects studio, Industrial Light & Magic, will be supervising the movies' conversion.

John Knoll, ILM's visual effects supervisor, said that getting a good result would require patience and a critical and artistic eye. He added that ILM was going to take its time with the work, to ensure the best experience possible. It's said that Lucas had been waiting until there were more theaters that could show 3D movies before starting work on the conversion.

This is the kind of news that can leave a Star Wars fan conflicted. On the one hand, the movies have been tinkered with a lot already, and 3D isn't going to make Han not shooting first any less infuriating. But on the other hand, it's a chance to see the movies in theaters again, which is always exciting.

@jebussves88

Couldn't agree with you any more.

Hasn't Lucas proven he's lost his mind enough and is only in it now for the payday?

if they want to do a Star Wars movie, why not making a new one based on the expanded universe.

Oh for the sake of everything holy. This is an exercise in tedium and greed. NONE of this is needed. With this I can finally say: go to hell, Lucas.

I left Star Wars for Star Trek a long time ago. It had changed since we first met, proceeded to get drunk every other night. I couldn't bear to see it destroy itself.

Of all the films in the trilogy you can convert to a 3D film first, you picked THE PHANTOM MENACE?

George Lucas, I am disappoint.

Oh boy!
The movies are going to be in theaters again but in 3D!
This is going to be so cool and all we have to do is pay $10 for all 6 movies to watch them all again even though I have all 6 of them on DVD now.
Look George, I like 3D movies as much as the next guy but really, this is a little much even for you.
The only scene I would want to see in 3D is in Episode 6 where Leia is laying in front of Jabba in that slave girl bikini but that's it.

HAVEN'T YOU GOT ENOUGH MONEY ALREADY, YOU GREEDY SOD?!

The prequels sucked (apart from parts of Phantom Menace, the Yoda vs Dooku fight in Attack of the Clones and some of the Revenge of the Sith), yet they made a hell of a lot of money. Why does he want more? He isn't catering for audiences as this addition to the films is completely unnecessary. They were not made for 3D. They are not Avatar.

I wonder if George Lucas realizes that the only way these will make money if they ship separately. What doofus would be stupid enough to buy the prequel trilogy -again-?

Is george lucas eating pure gold as breakfast? I just can´t imagine he needs more money...

It´s just sad when a man runs out off ideas and has to re-re-re-release his first movies.

Soooo... not only are we going to be insulted by having to watch Greedo shoot first again, but it's going to be IN 3D!!!

In all seriousness though, 3D is not always a bad thing, but a film has actually be shot with a 3D camera or it's just going to suck.

See, I'm conflicted here. The podracing scene would be pretty neat in 3D but I'd have to sit through an entire movie of Jar-Jar.

Ah well, for me only the first two movies of the new trilogy were bad so at least I can look forward to the other four. At this point I'm not effected by Lucas tinkering with the films anymore.
