Lulz Security, the hacking group apparently motivated by nothing more than their desire to laugh at the mayhem they cause, has had a busy day in an event they called Titanic Takeover Tuesday. Taking a break from their dumps of user data and server break-ins, today saw the group perform a bunch of distributed denial of service attacks against a range of targets.

First up?and still only intermittently available at the time of writing?was gaming magazine The Escapist, with no apparent reason for the attack. LulzSec boasted that taking down the site required just 0.4 percent of its DDoS capacity.

Next in line were the login servers for the game EVE Online. The effect of this attack was to bring down the EVE Online website at the same time, though LulzSec insists that this was not the actual target. In response to the DDoS, CCP Games, makers of EVE, have taken all their systems offline, for fear that they might be hacked. The company has also issued a statement to assure customers that their personal information remains secure.

The third target?and the only one for which the group has offered a rationale beyond "lulz"?is an IT security company named Finfisher. Their site was taken down, briefly, because "apparently they sell monitoring software to the government or some shit like that."

Gamers were once more in the crosshairs with the fourth target; more login servers, this time for Minecraft. Just as with EVE Online, going after the login servers also took out the game's website.

The pattern was repeated for the fifth target; login servers for the game League of Legends were knocked offline, a move which also brought down the game's website.

The result of all this? Lot of enraged gamers complaining about the downtime, and hence, many lulz for Lulz Security. Going after gaming targets hasn't made the group universally popular; posters on 4chan's /b/ forum, who might normally be sympathetic to lulz-motivated shenanigans, attempted to hunt LulzSec down. LulzSec dismissed the "/b/tards" as "damn furries," saying that they were the cream of the /b/ crop from 2005, distancing themselves from the /b/tards of today.

So ik im probly pretty late on this but i didnt know that they took the escapist down

Ok, seriously though, what reason did Lulzsec have for taking down any of these websites? It just seems random and odd. I know they're supposed to be in it for the "lulz", but it hardly seems entertaining to target a random target. I mean, it's like finding a kid in the playground and shoving him to the ground: yeah, sure, it might be funny (to the kid shoving), but wouldn't the kid shoving find more entertainment in shoving someone with actual reason for being shoved? I'm not mad at them for taking down my beloved Escapist; I'm just perplexed at their ways of finding entertainment.

If they are doing it for the "lulz", I think they can be more cost-effective and find better targets that will provide them with better entertainment value. I was on the fence about these guys, but now, I'm now just realizing they're acting like (and emotionally) a bunch of children.

OK, everyone, just leave it be.
They took us down because they were mad about what some people on here said about them, so why feed them further?
More importantly, there's little discussion value to be had. We have the facts, and everyone has their opinions.
We could save Kross a hassle by keeping to ourselves.

Meh, lets see them take down WoW. Patting themselves on the back for the Escapist and League of Legends? Not like they're knocking down the biggest sites in the world.

And the Escapist couldn't have been hard to DDOS. The servers can barely handle lunch break traffic on weekdays, to say nothing of the traffic they get on Wednesday. A DDOS is just overkill.

And Erana's right -- they attacked us because of the constant threads about how evil hackers in general are, nevermind the fact that black hats like Lulzsec do not speak for all hackers. For example, I love the Rockbox custom firmware I have for my midrange Sansa MP3 player. It adds all sorts of features, from video playback and support for pretty much every audio codec ever invented, to an open source port of Doom. However, none of it would have been possible without hackers. Anyway, we kind of brought this on ourselves by paying so much attention -- but I have a feeling that Lulzsec now has the attention of quite a few government agencies, and not in the good "oh hey, let's hire these hackers to improve our security" way, either.

They are that strange Uncle that comes to every other family gathering for the beer and ribs, cracking jokes that only he finds funny. This act alone is the primary source of his entertainment. Essentially they create entertainment, aka, lulz at other peoples expenses. If they wanted to do something actually lulzy why did they not just replace the backdrop with porn, or replaced all the English characters with Japanese, or some shit like that. Then everyone could have had a laugh. They honestly really need to get off their self conceived thrown of invincibility and grow up. They are not winning any support with their arbitrary vandalism, and generally pissing people off. It will bite them in the ass sooner or later.

In the end the best thing to do is ignore them, but that does not mean leaving the back door open to them.

Actually I would love to see that too. The ensuing nerd rage would result in catastrophic levels of death and dismemberment I think. This could only be a good thing.

Graham follows the guy on twitter.

Lulzec wanted to see the gamers sent running by taking down sites such as the Escapist.

My god, a GAMING forum for GAMERS is down. What on earth could those GAMERS possibly do.

And yes, there are other games than Minecraft and EVE.

Taking down WoW wouldn't do much for them in terms of attention. Oh sure they'd get the attention of the WoW players that make regular visits to gaming news sites but regardless of what LulzSec would do the rage they so crave would be direct at Blizzard and not them.

Honestly though, I'd be rather interested to see how the WoW servers would stand up to a hit from them; though I'm not sure the WoW community is one you want to piss off. While 4chan has it's reputation for stirring up shit when it gets angry I'd be afraid to see what happens when you piss of one of the biggest communities on the net known for it's constant pissing and moaning.

That's not even considering the guys in the top tier raiding guilds; god help anyone who makes them angry. Visit any one of their forums and you'll find page upon page of mind numbing math formulas for the games mechanics. These guys are typically the ones who write most of the raiding mods for the WoW community; make no mistake they could probably take on LulzSec if they had to. Factor in the more tech savy bunch that aren't in those guilds and the fraction of those who are regular /b/ posters and you've got a net shit-storm I would not wish on anybody.

So yeah, from a strategic stand point I'd regard the WoW and greater Blizzard community like the Japanese failed to regard the US before WWII; "the sleeping dragon" of the internet if you'll pardon the analogy.

Still, it would be funny as hell to watch that war play out....I think I need to restock on popcorn just in case.

I gotta agree with you there considering how many wow players are probably hackers themselves. Hell Lulzsec probably has a bunch of wow players in their ranks. It might just be the 'serpent eating it's own tail'.

If only they had a less stupid name. Hearing about them all the time is one thing, but reading the name every five fucking minutes just makes it worse. I mean, Lulzsec? Gaaaah!

lol, cream of the crop in 05? /b/ wasn't good then either. As far as "hacking" A DDoS is not hacking. In rpg gamer terms, I need 0 skill in lockpicking to open a door knob. Likewise, I need 0 skill in hacking to run my ion cannon and ddos the shit out of whoever I want. If this is Lulzsec, this aren't the same members that hacked Sony, that actually required some knowledge. This just requires an internet connection and free time.

hire some real hackers to trace where these people are.

hunt them down one by one and beat them on camera.

not because they're a threat, but because they think ddosing is hacking, makeing them...hacks!
