For every article that praises lulzsec there are 10 that condemn them and considering those guys are just as weak to being tackled the same way (even if their website?s aren?t publicly available) I don?t see them lasting long.
There are articles that praise Lulzsec? For what? They're a bunch of bullies running around pushing the neighborhood kids off their bikes and justifying it by going "we're just toughening them up!"

Well, I was right in the middle of a level 3 mission, but I had a pretty buffed tank, so even though my drones will probably be destroyed, my ship should be OK. I hope.

Anyways, this is just to say that I have only noticed the takedown of Eve Online, but not of the Escapist and Minecraft.

Actually I would love to see that too. The ensuing nerd rage would result in catastrophic levels of death and dismemberment I think. This could only be a good thing.
It would probably lead to millions of nerds experiencing the real world. Also they may even pass their uni course, so we can actually have clever people working on things, instead of them getting trapped in a mmo cycle (bullied at school, become an introvert, play wow to ignore problems, don't combat problems because it, get sucked into the game, never leaving the room except for cheetos and mountain dew)

What the hell man? I thought all these hacker groups were all about the "lulz". From what Extra Credit said lulz is suppose to be something funny or entertaing, but all they seem to be doing is ruining everyone else's fun. Stopping people from enjoying the Escapist is not entertaing, and stealing personal information from customers isn't funny. In fact its boring!

>_< Yeah I said it! hackers (who have done this crap), you are boring jerks!
You know what is funny? Replacing online terrorist bomb instructions with a cupcake formula! That is entertainment for the greater good! Your crap is pathetic!

They took us down because they were mad about what some people on here said about them, so why feed them further?
More importantly, there's little discussion value to be had. We have the facts, and everyone has their opinions.
We could save Kross a hassle by keeping to ourselves.

I somewhat disagree with that assertion because from my experience in psychology and MMOs respectively it seems like it is the other way around. Players dont become reclusive introverts because of the game. They are lured to the game because of social imbalances that allow them to become immersed in the world.

Got to remember, things like being a weak target for a bully, being an introvert and other issues related to social ineptitude existed generations before the first MMO crawled out of the digitally primordial soup.

They attacked us because the Escapist has been pretty consistent with reporting their doings, and we've been just as consistent in calling them the immature, childish attention whores that they are. They probably didn't like it.

Lulz Security, the hacking group apparently motivated by nothing more than their desire to laugh at the mayhem they cause, has had a busy day in an event they called Titanic Takeover Tuesday. Taking a break from their dumps of user data and server break-ins, today saw the group perform a bunch of distributed denial of service attacks against a range of targets.

First up?and still only intermittently available at the time of writing?was gaming magazine The Escapist, with no apparent reason for the attack. LulzSec boasted that taking down the site required just 0.4 percent of its DDoS capacity.

Next in line were the login servers for the game EVE Online. The effect of this attack was to bring down the EVE Online website at the same time, though LulzSec insists that this was not the actual target. In response to the DDoS, CCP Games, makers of EVE, have taken all their systems offline, for fear that they might be hacked. The company has also issued a statement to assure customers that their personal information remains secure.

The third target?and the only one for which the group has offered a rationale beyond "lulz"?is an IT security company named Finfisher. Their site was taken down, briefly, because "apparently they sell monitoring software to the government or some shit like that."

Gamers were once more in the crosshairs with the fourth target; more login servers, this time for Minecraft. Just as with EVE Online, going after the login servers also took out the game's website.

The pattern was repeated for the fifth target; login servers for the game League of Legends were knocked offline, a move which also brought down the game's website.

The result of all this? Lot of enraged gamers complaining about the downtime, and hence, many lulz for Lulz Security. Going after gaming targets hasn't made the group universally popular; posters on 4chan's /b/ forum, who might normally be sympathetic to lulz-motivated shenanigans, attempted to hunt LulzSec down. LulzSec dismissed the "/b/tards" as "damn furries," saying that they were the cream of the /b/ crop from 2005, distancing themselves from the /b/tards of today.

So ik im probly pretty late on this but i didnt know that they took the escapist down
Next time your decide to copy an Ars Technica article word for word you should credit them in your post.

I noticed that escapist went offline, but I didnt realise it was a DDoS. I just figured they had server troubles/maintenance.

Great OP. Way to throw it back in their face. Because everyone knows the best way to solve a problem is to continue to poke the infected area.

So THAT'S why The Escapist was on and off today! I was wondering.

But seriously, why do they insist upon attacking places they have no real issue with? And Minecraft? Why Minecraft? I don't play, but lots of people do. Aren't there any gamers in this hacker group? Aren't they getting nettled, just a little?

I not saying that the game turns them intervets, but many are looking to escape the lives, where they had become intorvets (trust me, i've been though this) Im saying it's just wow doing this either, i have 500 hours plugged into mount and blade when I particularly lonely

Oh, because I just love tempting fate, that's why. The more they do, the deeper they're in. They're already dead men and they know it. They just don't want to take it like men. They're basically worthless people that don't know when to stop, eating and eating up at the internet like a fat pig until here comes the farmer and-

You see what I did there? That's Jack refusing to bow or play dead. Oh no, they hacked the place I go to for a few laughs! It all just adds up. The hole just goes deeper and deeper. And they'll never get out of it, ever. No flipping force in the world will save them once it's over. That's reality. And I'm a dispensor of it.

Mind you, if the lulzboat was an actual in-game boat....
Cue hotdrop of every online titan pilot if low/nullsec, cue gank of every online battleship pilot if in high.

Eve isn't really that big of an MMO, less than a million members last I checked. If they simply want a lot of people to rage and cry, then I really don't know why they targeted EvE.

I never noticed the EvE takedown since I was fast asleep, but now that I know I'm not sure whether to laugh, cry or rage.

Meh, lets see them take down WoW. Patting themselves on the back for the Escapist and League of Legends? Not like they're knocking down the biggest sites in the world.
And the Escapist couldn't have been hard to DDOS. The servers can barely handle lunch break traffic on weekdays, to say nothing of the traffic they get on Wednesday. A DDOS is just overkill.

And Erana's right -- they attacked us because of the constant threads about how evil hackers in general are, nevermind the fact that black hats like Lulzsec do not speak for all hackers. For example, I love the Rockbox custom firmware I have for my midrange Sansa MP3 player. It adds all sorts of features, from video playback and support for pretty much every audio codec ever invented, to an open source port of Doom. However, none of it would have been possible without hackers. Anyway, we kind of brought this on ourselves by paying so much attention -- but I have a feeling that Lulzsec now has the attention of quite a few government agencies, and not in the good "oh hey, let's hire these hackers to improve our security" way, either.
Kross did an amazing job keeping the Escapist Up yesterday. It was down and laggy for most. But it wasnt worse than back in March.

Oh yeah, it's not Kross's fault -- the site just doesn't have enough servers to handle all the users it gets. Kross does an admirable job keeping things running with the equipment he has, but his job would definitely be easier if Themis could afford to upgrade their server infrastructure.

I know! This blase response is killing me. How about showing some passion for the things you enjoy? "Meh, it's just the escapist, what of it?" If that's what you think, sorry... just nothing to say to respond to that... Justice must be dealt. I wonder if some group thought it would be funny to target your home router with a DDoS. So what if generic-guy #105393485 did not have internet that day? Well generic-guy #105393485 happens to be a stock trader and without the internet that day he lost out on tons of money. Same thing here. A business that depends on viewer traffic for money was forcibly shut down by an outside party. Like if you wanted to go to a restaurant, and some prankster nailed boards over all the doors overnight, and nobody could get in. Responses to that article would be how people are so stupid and that they shouldn't do crap like that. Sure the boards can be pulled down but it costs the business time and money, so how is this different?

The Escapist is a unique community among the internet and should be treated as such!
