http://www.eveonline.com/news.asp?a=single&nid=4616&tid=1 < EVE Online confirms an attack

Hacker group Lulzsec followed their massive porn site login dump and successful attacks against numerous game companies, by turning its sights to other gaming websites. Today, the group claimed responsibility for bringing down EVE Online, Minecraft?s login server, and The Escapist website. As of writing, EVE Online and The Escapist?s sites are still down, but Minecraft seems to have recovered. However, some of the groups Tweets seem to indicate that the damage may not be immediately apparent on the site.

There is currently no word if any user information as affected by the intrusions.

The DDOS attacks on these gaming sites were apparently motivated not by spite, but by request. As part of an event they?ve dubbed #TitanicTakeoverTuesday, the group is taking requests by Twitter and by phone. When the number is called, a speaker with a faux French accent using the name ?Pierre Dubois? makes veiled reference to the groups Internet shenanigans.

Lulzsec first rose to prominence some weeks ago after posting a fictitious article to the PBS website and otherwise defacing the site.

UPDATE: Lulzsec now claims that the League of Legends login server has been taken down.

-----

I understand the gaming sites but why The Escapist? For the Lulz yes but why was this site targeted so early on? Minecraft and Eve online are obvious (and as some commenter said in the source thread - why not hit WOW?)

I think most will say -insert cursing- -insert naming calling- people like you keep posting threads stop provoking those -insert random curse/name calling- kids etc. etc.

I for one have no idea. I'd imagine for most everything else they do for lulz and no other reason.

Because they wouldn't be "the world's leaders in high-quality entertainment at your expense" if they didn't provide a little entertainment at our expense haha.

these guys cannot be laughing at this, i believe that little of the internet is laughing. this is trolling, it will make you mad and guess what THE TROLLS ARE FINDING FOOD ON THEIR OWN.
by that i mean when we find a troll on the forum ignore it, but when they start doing this its for some attention or they could be trolling where it cannot be ignored.

Sorry, I could not resist.

OT: I've said it before, so I will say it again. FUCK. THESE. HACKERS.

They seem to have no cause, and no reason. They are like children with acccess to nukes. They have no responsibility.

Actually I agree with the OP. Why not WoW? Are Blizzard Security masterminds? Or are all members of Lulzsec avid World of Warcraft gamers?

(I'm not saying this out of any hatred for WoW, I love the game, I'm just curious if my account details are safer there than elsewhere, wouldn't that be funny)

And come on why the Escapist, not cool guys, not cool.

The attacks were requested by phone. Somebody doesn't like us. (The Escapist)

But leave it to CCP to lock down their servers in both he physical and software world to resolve the issue. Someone get Anonymous to take these posers down.

They attack targets on request. People phone in with their requests, and they fulfill them. That's the point of Titanic Takedown Tuesday. So expect to see just as many websites and online services be taken offline next week. And the week after that.

There was a little hint of personal vendetta towards the escapist. To those claiming it was 'unprovoked', i think all the attention from news posts and people's reaction of "man screw those hackers they're just kids" would have provided more than enough motivation for LulzSec to take it personally. People here are fairly arrogant and if you mouth off about someone in a higher position than yourself, whether rightly or wrongly, they're going to take action. It's not so much the "what do you think of LulzSec" threads that incurs their wrath, but all the rage and posts full of hatred and contempt that wrought it.

Another thing; DDoS isn't hacking. It's just sending so many useless packets of data that the server can't handle it.

I expect WoW and Microsoft and similar large corporations will either be fired at in a following Titanic Takedown Tuesday, or LulzSec are proactively organising a much bigger publicised takedown. Something beyond a simple DDoS attack. I highly doubt they've escaped the captain's spyglass, so to speak. Though another thing to note is that LulzSec only targets security that is already weak. That's why they do what they do, to highlight the complete lack of internet security. They tried breaking into Facebook but found it was surprisingly secure against intrusions, and as such it's been left alone, and probably will be indefinitely. For all we know they might've had a go against Microsoft and Blizzard already, but they might have good security, in which case LulzSec won't be interested.

You fail to understand the lulz. They attack whatever website they please, whenever they please because they can. By taking down The Escapist they created anger and resentment towards their own group, but no-one can do anything about it. It's David vs Goliath except David doesn't have any rocks to throw. The Escapist was just another target, not even a real one at that, just a DDoS.

Stop getting angry at it. Sit back, relax, watch the Lulz roll by and change your password.

Yeah, WoW wouldn't really be affected much by a DDoS. Lulzsec will probably launch a full assault on the port we call WoW if they want to get Blizzard, they wouldn't go with a mere DDoS. If they hacked WoW servers then they can get user information, passwords, card information etc, with a DDoS they can take the servers out until they get bored and move on.

Two MMOs, an extremely popular indie game, and a gaming website?

I seriously don't get these guys, how did they get their 'hack on request' idea?

Anyway, what's the Escapist's staff word on this?

Well the EVE Online post said they put their service back up having decided there had been no damage. But as of now 1:30am UK Time they had a follow up hit and have taken the Tranquility server back down for now.

I hope my training queue lasts until it is back up. :)

I really wish people would stop tossing around the word hack. A DDOS attack isn't a hack it's just flooding a server with a bunch of false requests until it's crashes or is so flood it can't respond to real traffic, in terms of tech know how it takes zero knowledge.

I never thought I'd actually miss Anonymous... at least they had principles. I didn't agree with how they followed them, it's true, but at leat they had them.
