Even if they have since fixed that absurd design, it still doesn't excuse the welding of CPUs to the motherboard and the fact that they ever did it at all tells me that they have absolutely no respect for the customer.
A lot of 'brand name' laptops come with their CPUs welded on... Which I kind of like because it gives me another excuse not to work on the bastard things.
I fail to see how the cpu not being welded to the motherboard forces you to work on the thing. However, in having it welded it forces you not too.
Forces? Nothing forces me but people are always asking me to fix laptops and I like having an arsenal of reasons to avoid doing so because working on the fiddly little fucks is a pain in the arse.

'sides, welding the CPU in makes them less prone to travel and vibration damage, which is the excuse the manufacturers who do it use.

Okay so normally I skim through these threads because they're the same thing every time but apparently people are recommending i7s and X6s for gaming.

The i5 2500k is really the best CPU for gaming. Maaaaybe i7 2600k if you do other things like 3d rendering or video editing. And the highest you should ever go with AMD is an X4 955. X6 gives you no benefit in gaming.

Also I'm laughing my ass off that someone actually signed up as zyzz.

Oh you mean on laptops? Right. Yeah, I don't much care about whether or not the cpus on the laptops are upgradable. I agree, it's way more effort than it's worth to change them over, though I suppose theoretically I'd prefer to have the option to, it's just impractical...I completely missed that point. Way back up the line when I originally mention it I think it said on desktop specified desktops.

I was talking about how it's typically done on the desktops as being poor treatment of users. I see no reason why a workstation or PC should ever need to have the CPU welded down.

Oh right... for desktops that's just Apple being their usual controlfreak selves. They're almost as bad as console manufacturers when it comes to consumers cracking open the case. You usually only see welded CPUs in the cheapest of cheap shit desktops, probably to stop them falling apart during shipping.

What have you got against X4 965s?
I don't have anything against them; it's just that they're the exact same as 955s but with a slight factory overclock.

Well looks like pcs are what most of us prefer because of flexibility and freedom as oppose to macs.

PC all the way. Now why i think this,

A MAC is for the kind of person who tries to hard to look trendy. All style no substance. Then a big price on top cos its "designer".

A PC is a tool, A MAC is a fashion accessory.
U want "bang for your buck" then a PC is the only way to go, u want a expensive, smooth, white, glossy ornament which also happens to be an average computer then u need a MAC.

I've been raged at for bashing Macs have not owned one when I have used one on many, many times in order to complete tasks for work or college and I'd have to say Macs are shit for me.

My mate had to deal with the grueling task of trying to use a Mac at Uni where they had whole computer labs filled with them... He can vouch for me when I say Mac aren't meant for networking... As they bug/trip out, ask for login info too many times/lack basic let alone advanced features used when implementing Windows server 2008.

I know all I have to prove my argument that PCs are win is gaming support but seriosuly I have just found things that you can do on a Mac the same amount of ease if not more easier with a PC such as:

Installing more than one operating systems on one machine
upgrading and configuring hardware (internal components)
connecting to a network or the internet
getting driver support for devices

I just generally love PCs so much better for their customisation abilities and compatibility which at the end of the day is my ultimatum for everything... "If you can't work with it then GTFO!"

From what I hear, Mac's are all about delivering a standard experience. That's all fine and dandy for the average user, and it allows them to streamline A LOT. For people expecting to play the latest games, or otherwise wanting to do things outside the standard experience, though, it's a problem. PC's essentially are customizable, so that what you want to do, you don't have to buy an entirely new rig to do it if you already have one. It's all about compatibility, and that leads to a general lack of optimization, programming wise (Jack of all trades, master of none deal). At least, so I've been told.

I prefer Windows Vista Professional (not PC, Windows != PC!!!!)

I tried Ubuntu honestly, and it was a bit nightmarish.

Anyway, most of the appeal for me in Windows is the customizability and flexibility of the system.

I have nothing against Macs, but I do have a problem with people saying they're "better" than Windows. They're not.

I'd like sometime to get myself a cheap old Mac and learn some Objective-C and use it as a programming plaything, and perhaps a backup in case my laptop kicks the bucket and I need internet.

Being a PC gamer since I was about 12 yrs old, I couldn't possibly find use for a mac. If my iphone is any indication, then i'm sure macs are good, but it's just not suited to my specific needs. That being said, I would get my that mac book air or whatever its called, the one with the flash drive.

It's not that Mac's suck, they are just a bit overpriced in my opinion. I can get a PC that will do everything a Mac can for 600 bucks. The Mac costs 1100. Also, it's impossible to game on a Mac because so little is compatible with it, from both a software and hardware standpoint.

Now, I recognize that PCs have some security problems and some bloat problems and registry problems. However, all these are easily fixed with freeware programs and some common sense. I'm sorta tech savvy, the only thing I wish is I was confident enough to go for Linux.

I've said it before and I'll say it 1000 times. Macs ARE PCs. Unless the acronym "PC" began to stand for something other than "Personal Computer" in the world of computing when I wasn't looking or Macs have somehow become impersonal (which would kinda kill their marketing), Macs are PCs. Esp. nowadays when really the only thing separating a Mac from, say an IBM, is the Operating System. And really if you wanted you could put the MacOS on the IBM, although I'm not sure IBM or Apple would approve of you doing that. You can also put Windows on your Mac, or Linux or whatever the hell Operating System you wanna use. If you really wanted you could build your own Operating System from scratch, but that'd take a hellova lot of time and a shit load of coding.

I don't hate Macs... I dislike them because they are not customizable. If I build my PC ( and I can build a PC with comparable Hardware for less... I have yet to come across a Mac that was cheaper than one I could build)

For me customization of my system is key. That's why I use Linux, and because I am a gamer I have to use Windows. so...... yeah, but even so, I buy a Windows PC I can still load other OSs on it no problem, Yes Mac does have bootcamp... but last I checked Bootcamp ONLY works with Windows (and Server but you have to do some extra work).

So yeah... I like to customize my computer, and PCs are more customizable plain and simple. I can mess with my hardware I can mess with my software I can change it..... with a Mac I am stuck.

That's the reason for my preference.

I use Windows XP, I'll never permanently switch off NT-based systems but I don't mind them if they're not my personal one. I use OSX at school and it's fine for me, but it doesn't run what I want to at home.

Speaking as someone who has a mac, I can tell you that it's a piece of crap. It's slow, unresponsive, it's ability to connect to the internet is woeful and can't support anything close to modern when it comes to games. Plus it doesn't have a cooling system so it's going to melt way sooner then it should. Thank god it's only a rental for year 11 and 12 of school...
