They should throw everyone off and set it somewhere completely unexpected like, I don't know... Poland.

[sub][sub][sub]... I gotta see Mad Max and find out what I'm missing.[/sub][/sub][/sub]

Crocodile Dundee game - main character is from the swamps of Louisiana!

ANZAC series - it's a reality TV show about the American National Zoo Acquisition Crew.

Australia - yeah, it's a movie about Texas.

Max Max is in Australia, that's the point. Braveheart is set in Scotland, that's the point. V For Vendetta is set in England, that's the point. Children of Men is set in the United Kingdom, that's the point. The Lord of the Rings is set in New Zealand, that's the point!

I just...no.

OTOH, they were going to set Harry Potter in the US in the movies, until Rowling told them no.

Ok, you had me until Lord of the Rings being set in New Zealand. You do know it's not even set on this planet? Middle Earth is inspired by various parts of the world, and pure imagination.

The Shire in particular, is very much based on England.

I'm not saying New Zealand wasn't the perfect place to double for most of Middle Earth for Peter Jackson's purposes, but it's not relevant as it's not set anywhere on Earth.

Oh also I don't care about this "Mad Max" game any more, Australia was pretty much the key feature of it, without that it's just a generic driving/shooting game.

But... why NOT set it in Australia if it doesn't matter so much?
This. So much.

But no, I expect it to be because your boring dull gravelvoiced american will sell better and they're worried a large portion of their american customers would refrain from buying it because they don't want to play as some queer foreigner.

I'm afraid you are wrong. The Shire is squarely in Matamata, North Island, New Zealand. I've even climbed Mt. Doom, it's not volcanic any more - what with Sauron being defeated at the end of the Third Age. We now call it Mount Ngauruhoe and it's a right ***** to climb, entire thing is just volcanic rock and every step causes the stones beneath you to shift or give way.

I wasn't being serious about Lord of the Rings, ya dink! Of course it isn't real!

I didn't say it wasn't filmed in New Zealand, just that it wasn't a defining feature of the movie, especially as I'm pretty sure Tolkien never went there, so couldn't have intended NZ to be Middle Earth.

Most of the descriptions of the Shire sound like a fairly typical English country village, and yes, Peter Jackson managed to put that in New Zealand perfectly.

Avalanche, I thought you were cool, what with your Latino action hero and all.

(Note: I have no idea how realistic Rico's accent was, but at least it was unique)

"It's really a game to do with the relationships between different people in this world."

So why change it to American?
Game panted by numbers. There is nothing to see here, not even worth rubber necking.

Just... just fire the asshole who suggested not using Australia as a setting now. Your game will be better for it, in the long run.

I don't agree with the decision. That said, when Australia is probably going to end up banning the game for being too violent (because, y'know, Australia), then I kind of understand not bothering to try and appeal to that market.

Well actually, Tolkien intended for the Lord of the Rings to be set 6000 years ago on our own planet, so for all we know, it could have very well been set in New Zealand.

I'm not arguing that New Zealand has any significance to LotR like Australia has to Mad Max, I'm just saiyan.

Uh, we've got an R18+ rating now...

Also, terrible decision. Yet another game following the absolutely puzzling design structure of "We need to base this on an existing franchise to ensure a preexisting target audience. Now, let's alienate that audience as much as possible".

Is it because Americans won't buy anything that doesn't feature americans?
well surely enough Americans enjoyed the original despite the accents for a game to be made out of it.

OT: if its not in Australia how are they going to work in boomerangs?

Wow. It didn't take long for this game to start going downhill. I had just seen the trailer for it and then I read this. Excitement, then despair, it's been a very emotional day for me and it's only 7:30 in the morning.

Also, as an American, I don't want American accents. I want Australian. I am offended for you Australia!
